HOT SPRINGS, Va. A squabble about scandals is consuming much of
the first debate between Virginia's gubernatorial candidates.Democrat Terry
McAuliffe confronted Republican Ken Cuccinelli about gifts he took from
Jonnie Williams and his troubled nutritional supplements firm, Star Scientific.
When the company sued Virginia over a $700,000 tax dispute, McAuliffe claimed,
Cuccinelli owned stock in the company and let the case languish.Lecturing
Cuccinelli about Williams, McAuliffe said, "Instead of taking him to court,
he took you to New York."McAuliffe wrongly claimed that a prosecutor's report
Thursday said Cuccinelli should be prosecuted for his role with Williams.
It made no such finding; it cleared Cuccinelli.Cuccinelli accused McAuliffe
of fabricating claims about his electric car company's employment figures
and a wood pellet company in Hampton Roads that has produced no
pellets.
The New Zealand capital Wellington was rattled by a strong magnitude 6.9
earthquake on Sunday that broke water mains, smashed windows and downed
power lines.Wellington Police Inspector Marty Parker said there had been
minor structural damage that had left parts of the city without power.
There have been no reports of injury and no tsunami. The U.S. Geological
Survey said the quake struck under the Cook Strait 35 miles southwest
of Wellington. It was 6 miles underground. The quake could be felt hundreds
of kilometers away in the center of New Zealand's North Island.Parker said
the quake struck near nightfall. A more complete picture of the damage
would emerge in the morning, he said.New Zealand is part of the
so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" that receives regular seismic activity.
A severe earthquake in the city of Christchurch in 2011 killed 185
people and destroyed much of the city's downtown. That earthquake had a
magnitude of 6.3; however, the epicenter was located just 6 miles southeast
of the city.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">sidetracked after conservatives,
many of them elected with tea party support, objected to any attempt
to improve the current law rather than scuttle it.With the rank and
file growing more conservative, some Republicans acknowledge that without
changes, they likely couldn't pass the alternative measure they backed when
Democrats won approval for Obama's bill in 2010. Among other provisions,
it encouraged employers to sign up their workers for health insurance automatically,
so that employees would have to "opt out" of coverage if they
didn't want it, and provided federal money for state-run high-risk pools
for individuals and for reinsurance in the small group market. The current
state of intentions contrasts sharply with the Pledge to America, the manifesto
that Republicans campaigned on in 2010 when they took power away from
the Democrats. That included a plan to "repeal and replace" what it
termed a government takeover of health care.It promised "common-sense solutions
focused on lowering costs and protecting American jobs," including steps
to overhaul medical malpractice laws and permit the sale of insurance across
state lines. Republicans said they would "empower small businesses with
greater purchasing power and create new incentives to save for future health
care needs." They promised to "protect the doctor-patient relationship,
and ensure that those with pre-existing conditions gain access to the coverage
they need."But Rep. Paul
Helen Thomas, a pioneer for women in journalism, has died at age
92.The irrepressible White House correspondent who used her seat in the
front row to grill 10 presidents -- often to their discomfort and
was not shy about sharing her opinions -- died at her apartment
in Washington.Thomas had been ill for a long time and in and
out of the hospital before coming home Thursday, said friend Muriel Dobbin.
She made her name as a bulldog for United Press International in
the great wire-service rivalries of old and as a pioneer for women
in journalism.Thomas was persistent to the point of badgering. One White
House press secretary described her questioning as "torture" -- and he was
one of her fans. Her refusal to conceal her strong opinions, even when
posing questions to a president, and her public hostility toward Israel,
caused discomfort among colleagues. In 2010, that tendency ended a career
that had started in 1943 and made her one of the best
known journalists in Washington. On a videotape circulated on the Internet,
she said Israelis should "get out of Palestine" and "go home" to
Germany, Poland or the United States. The remark brought down widespread
condemnation and she resigned. In January 2011, she became a columnist for
a free weekly paper in a Washington suburb, months after the controversy
forced her from her previous post.In her long career, she was indelibly
associated with the ritual ending White House news conferences. She was
