Announcing the public beta release of man_db 2.3.x.
---------------------------------------------------
man_db is a manual pager suite that makes extensive use of databases to
speed up the location and display of manual pages within the manual page
hierarchies.
The main programs included in this package are `man', `mandb', `whatis',
`apropos', `manpath' and `catman'. The program `makewhatis' is no longer
required as whatis information is stored directly within the databases. The
program `straycats', included with man_db-2.2 is also redundent as it has
been merged into mandb.
man_db has been in alpha/beta test since the last public release around
August of 1994. Many features and improvements have been added. It's beta
status is simply acknowledgement of the fact that this version has not had
wide public scrutiny, although it has been tested successfully on various
UNIX operating systems with various setups.
