Sun Wah Linux Launches "Project Liberate?
   May 23rd, 01:27 UTC

To Promote True Open Source Software Development and Community Building in
Asia

May 1, 2005 -- In efforts to encourage and promote the spirit of open
source collaboration in Asia, Sun Wah Linux today announced the launch of
Project Liberate - a venture that transforms previously closed source
software into open source projects and makes them readily available to
community for their use and study. By offering a variety of easy-to-use
tools to assist collaborative open source development, Project Liberate
aims to become the focal point of open source development communities in
Asia now and beyond.

Initially, Sun Wah Linux will release Maxenger, a Web-based email
solution; Firebeast, an easy-to-use firewall application; and GroupwareX,
a groupware calendaring and project management product. These projects
will be hosted on Sun Wah Linux' new community website,
https://liberate.sw-linux.com.

"Sun Wah Linux has been an active force in the promotion of an open source
software (OSS) industry for a while now. With Project Liberate, we are
able to unite a diverse group of programmers, developers and I.T. gurus
inside one large community to work together towards the usage, development
and promotion open standard software," said Alex Banh, Deputy CEO of Sun
Wah Linux. ??We understand that there are concerns over openness,
flexibility and the adaptation of Asia open source development. However we
are confident that Project Liberate is the first step within the OSS
liberation movement. We believe that Project Liberate will help Asian Free
and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities become a recognized
contributor in the global FOSS ecosystem and this will lead to an
increased number of users coming to share their ideas, visions and
knowledge in an open manner.??

As the largest Linux solutions provider in China, Sun Wah Linux has had a
long history of helping to bridge the gap between Chinese and Asian open
source communities. Project Liberate is yet another example of how Sun Wah
Linux is leading the industry towards new and exciting boundaries by
providing innovative and quality products to the public. Over the past
year, Sun Wah Linux became the first Linux distribution in Asia to comply
with the global Linux Standard Base (LSB) 2.0. Already this year, Sun Wah
Linux has co-sponsored China OSS Week 2005, which included the first Asia
Debian Mini-Conf 2005 and Asia CodeFest 2005. This was tremendously
successful in connecting open source leaders and developers from all
around the world to foster collaboration and exchange knowledge with the
local communities.

In the near future, Sun Wah Linux will actively continue a series of
initiatives to lead the promotion of OSS. Through tight knit collaboration
with the wider community, Sun Wah Linux is confident that Project Liberate
will grow and mature in a healthy manner. New supporting projects will be
introduced to build on the Project Liberate momentum and encourage more
community developers to exchange ideas relating to OSS.

"Sun Wah Linux continues to support OSS through the launch of education
projects because we believe that open source development is not only
limited to software development, but also widely implemented in education.
In addition to education, Sun Wah Linux continues to support OSS through
active participation within the CJK OSS Promotion Forum.?? Concluded
Banh,??We are fully dedicated to leading the industry in a direction that
will benefit the marketplace, as well as all those who are actively
involved in the OSS community in Asia.??
