RELIABILITY AND COST SAVINGS MAKE "THE LINUX ENTERPRISE CLUSTER"
ATTRACTIVE TO BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES

Real-world cluster serves as model for building high-availability system

March 12, 2004, San Francisco - Nothing demonstrates our dependence on
technology more than when a server goes down and office productivity comes
to a screeching halt. Author Karl Kopper's real-world response to this
scenario is outlined in "The Linux Enterprise Cluster" (No Starch Press,
April '05). The book describes how he put several inexpensive computers on
a network, installed free software and made the individual machines
operate as one big server called a cluster, thus saving his company time,
money and resources. "The Linux Enterprise Cluster" goes through every
step needed from start to finish to build a cluster of Linux computers
capable of supporting an entire enterprise reliably and cost-effectively.

Kopper explains that his book doesn't contain new or arcane technology.
Rather, it contains all of the information and knowledge he gained while
assembling an enterprise-class cluster from scratch for United Natural
Foods, the largest publicly traded wholesale distributor to the natural
and organic foods industry. Kopper did extensive legwork finding free or
open source software and consulting countless websites, open source
experts, help files, email lists and FAQs, as well as leveraging his own
considerable experience supporting large servers and distributed computing
environments. This is the only book to aggregate the most helpful
information - based on actual experience - about enterprise-class Linux
clusters in one reference manual.

The actual cluster that served as the book's model went live in February
2003 and has experienced virtually no system downtime on a free operating
system built cooperatively by volunteers on the Internet. Kopper sees "The
Linux Enterprise Cluster" as a testament to the power of free software,
online collaboration and the open source community.

"After doing all the research and having success replacing a big
monolithic server with a cluster, I was inspired to share my knowledge
with other system administrators with a similar need," said Kopper. "It
will be useful to a wide audience, since the cluster of individual
computers can be virtually any size, depending on how much computing
horsepower is required. The book shows that it's possible to build a very
inexpensive and reliable business system for a small enterprise or large
corporation."

"The Linux Enterprise Cluster" is a valuable resource for system
administrators who use Linux; system administrators interested in Linux
but short on experience; students new to the information processing field;
and anyone considering deploying Linux in an environment where low-cost
computer reliability is important. In fact, any systems administrator
charged with keeping mission-critical systems up and running will find
useful techniques here; the book's second half describes high-availability
techniques that can be used with or without a cluster.

Also described in "The Linux Enterprise Cluster":
* How to build a high-availability server using the Heartbeat package
* How to configure a reliable printing systems in a Linux cluster
  environment
* How to build a job scheduling system in Linux with no single point of
  failure

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Karl Kopper has worked for nearly 20 years with distributed computing
environments on many platforms, including Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and
UNIX. He has contributed to the development of numerous Linux and open
source projects, including Heartbeat, Ganglia, Linux Virtual Server (LVS),
Kernel and Zope. When not building high-availability clusters, he enjoys
gardening.

From: Tim Daneliuk <tundra@tundraware.com>
Subject: [ANN]: mkapachepw 1.21 Released And Available
Date: 12 Apr 2005 19:30:01 GMT
Reply-To: tundra@tundraware.com

'mkapachepw' Version 1.121 is now released and available for download at:

          http://www.tundraware.com/Software/mkapachepw

This is the first public release of the program.

A FreeBSD port has been submitted as well.

What Is 'mkapachepw'?
==================

'mkapachepw' is an Apache user/group management package with a
rich set of features:

   - Automatically Create Apache Users/Groups From Underlying OS Users/Groups:

'mkapachepw' can extract any or all Unix system users and/or
groups and automatically include them in the production
Apache user and group files. This makes it easy to
manage users via the traditional Unix tools and propagate
this information for Apache's use. Note that for this to work,
Apache has to understand the hash algorithm the underlying
Unix system uses to encrypt password.

   - Break Large, Complex User & Group Data Into Separately Managed Files:

User/Group files can be constructed out of any number of
subsidiary files. This allows the webmaster to combine
separate user and group files that are independently
managed by, say, Marketing, Engineering, Sales, and so on,
into single, production Apache user and group files.

   - Specify Which Particular Users/Groups Are To Be Included Or Excluded:

Specific users and/or groups can be explicitly included or
excluded in the final user and group files. This can
be done by name, UID, or GID. These in/exclusions are applied
to both system users/groups, as well as those found in the
     subsidiary files.

   - Catch (And Prevent) Redefinition Of User/Groups:

"Collisions" of users or groups are caught, and optionally,
prevented. Say the Marketing user file has a user
named "bob", and so does Engineering. If an attempt is
made to consolitate these two subsidiary files into a single
Apache user file, 'mkapachepw' will, by default, issue
a warning (and the last definition will be that one loaded
into the Apache user file). A command line switch is
available to prevent this entirely by issuing an error and
exiting on the first collision encountered.

'mkapachepw' is a pure-Python application and should run on
any Unix system that support Python 2.4 or later. The program
is known to work on FreeBSD.

See the web page for licensing terms and the complete documentation.

Subject: Digital Room Correction 2.5.1

Hello,

DRC 2.5.1 is out and is available at:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/drc/

Changes:

A new ringing truncation stage has been added to remove excessive
ringing caused sometimes by the pre-echo truncation procedure. The
sliding lowpass prefiltering procedure has been rewritten to make it
a bit more accurate and to make the code more readable. The
postfiltering stage has been split to provide a separate stage for
microphone compensation. The documentation has been vastly improved,
switching to LaTeX for document generation and formatting. Many other
minor bugs have been fixed.

Regards,

Hello,
I am a Suchen G. Chodankar(from Durbhat, Ponda) student of final
year I.T. Engineering course at Goa College of Engineering,
Farmagudi.

Me and my class-mate Sagar Arlekar(from Calangute) has designed a
web based fantasy cricket game. This game is similar to
superselector on espnstar.com . The game is built using open source
and free software.
Apache- web server
PHP- scripting language
MySql- database

We are thankful to the open source community.

This game was started as a semester project in Jan 2004, at that
time the project had 7 members all students of I.T. Engineering
course, Goa College of Engineering. In Jan 2005 we restarted the
project work, added new features to it and made it fully functional
and put it online. You can register at www.superteam05.cjb.net. We
already have about 60 users registered.

The game is free to use, open to all and easy to understand. You
just have to select a cricket team of 11 players that includes 5
batsmen, 4 bowlers, 1 allrounder and 1 wicket keeper. Your team will
gain points as the players selected by you score/perform in real
matches. You compete against other users. The game closes at the end
of the month.

We have a message board on the site to gain your feedback.

Enjoy playing superteam.

Thank You

Suchen G. Chodankar

Subject: [ANN] Cluster Resources, Inc., Partners with LinuxHPC.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLUSTER RESOURCES, INC., PARTNERS WITH LINUXHPC.ORG

April 12, 2005, SPANISH FORK, Utah - Cluster Resources announced today a new
partnership with LinuxHPC.org, an online site that provides news, technical
information and a free multi-vendor cluster quoting service.

"Faster, more reliable quotes - that's what this partnership means to
organizations looking to invest in a cluster," said Ken Farmer, owner of
LinuxHPC.org. "Our ability to address the individual needs of each
organization has increased significantly with Cluster Resources on board."

LinuxHPC.org simplifies the cluster quoting process by providing one central
location where organizations can gather research and request quotes from
multiple cluster hardware vendors. Cluster Resources will assist in the
service by acting as an advocate during the quoting process. After an
organization submits information about its cluster needs (i.e., number of
processors, amount of memory, network type, etc.), Cluster Resources will
contact the organization to verify the request and then submit it to
multiple vendors. Organizations can select vendors by name, by specialty or
by geography, and Cluster Resources will ensure the request is sent to as
many or as few vendors as desired.

"I went to some of the cluster vendors' Web sites and on most of them I
couldn't get a straight quote," said James Clemens of the University of
Arkansas. "Submitting my request through LinuxHPC.org saved me time because
I didn't have to submit a quote to 30 different vendors. Instead, I was able
to submit one request to multiple vendors on one Web site."

In order to provide additional value to the site, Cluster Resources plans to
create a cluster building worksheet. This resource will organize information
about the various hardware, software, network and other options for
selecting and building a cluster. The purpose is to help organizations do
their "due diligence" research quicker and expose a broader set of options
for consideration. The cluster building worksheet will provide baseline
overviews and links to in-depth resources and comparisons where available.

"With this partnership, we will work to provide a centralized source of
information and to act as an advocate for organizations as they seek to make
good clustering decisions," said Michael Jackson, President of Cluster
Resources, Inc.

Cluster Resources provides custom workload solutions to thousands of sites
that cover a broad spectrum of cluster environments. Cluster Resources will
leverage this experience in providing this free service. The cluster quoting
service is valuable not only for organizations that are uncertain about the
cluster building process, but also for experienced sites that simply want to
accelerate the process.

The quoting service can be found at http://www.LinuxHPC.org/ClusterQuote.
