Subject: sysstat-5.1.5 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: Sat, 12 Mar 2005 02:30:12 CST
Hi all,
This is to announce that sysstat 5.1.5 is now available for download.
This development release (which should be the last version before the
next sysstat 5.2.0 stable release) fixes several bugs concerning disk
statistics as displayed by sar -d and sadf.
Also in this version, a new output format has been added to sadf which
is now able to display the contents of sar data files in XML. The
corresponding DTD is included in the source package.
Sysstat 5.1.5 is available for download from my web page at:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/
146kB sysstat-5.1.5.tar.gz
116kB sysstat-5.1.5.tar.bz2
150kB sysstat-5.1.5-1.src.rpm
134kB sysstat-5.1.5-1.i586.rpm
It should also be available on ibiblio Linux archive site:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, sadf, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.
Feedback always welcomed. Send your remarks and comments to:
sysstat <at> wanadoo.fr.

Enjoy!
Changes vs 5.1.4 are:
* -x option added to sadf: it is now able to display the contents of a
sar datafile in XML. The corresponding DTD (Document Type Definition) is
included in the sysstat package.
* Small code change so that sysstat may be compiled with gcc-4.0.
* A few typos fixed in formulas used by sadf to display stats on
machines where HZ<>100 (typos appeared in sysstat 5.1.4).
* Fixed a bug in the stats displayed by sar -d.
* Removed a false workaround in iostat: better show that the kernel is
buggy rather than display a value that seems correct but which is
actually not...
* Fixed sar -i option which might not select records at the specified
interval on machines with multiple processors.
* NLS updated and cleaned. Do no longer translate fields names (sar,
iostat, etc.). Changed nb_NO.po and nn_NO.po files to nb.po and nn.po.
* Bug fixed in spec file: when installing sysstat i586 RPM package, sa1
and sa2 scripts were pointing to the wrong sadc location.
* Now sar and sadc display the magic number when they meet an invalid
system activity file.
* sadf manual page updated.
* sysstat RPM spec file is now included in source package.
* Code cleaned.
* FAQ, Makefile and CREDITS files updated.

Subject: [fcron announce] Fcron 2.9.6 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron
Date: Sat, 12 Mar 2005 09:11:59 CST
What is new in this release (2.9.6) ?
=====================================
* fixed the bug which made jobs run an hour too early after a
daylight saving time change.
Added detailed explanations about when a job will run when there
is a DST change in the FAQ.
* fixed fcrondyn's "Unknown command" bug on x86_64 (thanks go to
Georgi Georgiev).
* made fcrontab behave better when there is no space left in the
spool directory (used to truncate the fcrontab source file).
* Added a script, check_system_crontabs, to emulate Vixie cron's
behavior about /etc/crontab and /etc/cron.d. Please have a look at
the top of script/check_system_crontabs for more information.
* HP-UX support (needs more tests).
* bug fix : restore umask even if fcron runs unprivileged.
What is fcron ?
==============
Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements
most its functionalities.
But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up 7
days a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which are
not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to anacrontab).
In other words, fcron does both the job of Vixie Cron and anacron, but
does even more and better :)) ...
To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same
as system up time. For example :
Run the task 'save /home/ directory'
every 3h15 of system up time.
and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining
until next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.
You can also say :
run that command once between 2am and 5am
which will be done if the system is running at any time in this interval.
Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to every lines following the declaration or to a single line.
Some of the supported options permit to:
- run jobs one by one,
- set the max system load average value under which the job should be
run,
- set a nice value for a job,
- run jobs at fcron's startup if they should have been run
during system down time,
- mail user to tell him a job has not run and why,
- a better management of the mailing of outputs ...
What is planed for next releases ?

(I've sent the file but it may take some time before it is available on
metalab)
or get it from seul.org (USA) :
