Subject: C to JVM compiler/IDE MPC 1.0.4 released
Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2005 08:01:22 CST
Axiomatic Solutions Sdn Bhd today announced the availability of MPC 1.0.4.
MPC (Multi-Platform C) is a C compiler/IDE targeting the JVM (generates Java
Byte Code). The resulting .class executables will be able to run on any
Java Virtual Machine (tm). MPC enables programmers to write/port
applications using C targeting the JVM, thus, opening up a whole new market
dimension vis-a-vis JVM-enabled devices such as desktop systems, PDAs,
cellphones, game consoles, etc. MPC can be used to turn legacy applications
written in C into JVM applications, with a single source base to manage.
MPC includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI) as part of the Integrated
Development Environment (IDE) for fast and organized software development.
MPC is based upon the American National Standards Institute C (ANSI C),
X3.159-1989. There are however a few differences between MPC and a fully
compliant ANSI C compiler. The differences of MPC with a fully compliant ANSI
C compiler are described in MPC's product description.
Hardware Requirements:
- Any x86 compatible computer running Linux
- Macintosh computer running MacOSX
- 64MB RAM minimum
Software Requirements:
- Java SDK 1.4.2 or newer.
- Jasmin Assembler v1.06 (GNU General Public License). Distributed with MPC
installer.

GKnews is a NNTP server monitor plugin for GKrellM2.
For every newsgroup configured, it shows the number of new articles
available on server since the last one readed. It features multiple
server and newsgroup support and authentication for each server.
Version 0.1 is the first released version. It hasn't been tested on
other systems than mine yet, but it works for me.
GKnews is released under the GNU General Public License terms, and is

An updated NSA Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) release is available
from the NSA SELinux web site; see
http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/news.cfm#R050309. This release is based on
Linux 2.6.11. The SELinux kernel patch for 2.6.11 includes enhanced MLS
support, changes to the execute-related permission checking for legacy
binaries, and an extension to the /proc/pid/attr API to allow use by
scripts. Enhanced MLS support has been merged into the userspace
libraries and tools. The libraries and tools have been modified to
allow local customization of file contexts and users without requiring
policy sources, and to preserve certain types that are marked as being
customizable upon relabels. The technical reports in the selinux-doc
package were updated to reflect the current SELinux code. Numerous
patches for the userspace libraries, tools, and policy were merged.
Updated versions of setools, slat, and polgen were added.
Security-Enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible mandatory access
control architecture into the major subsystems of the Linux kernel. The
system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of information
based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This mechanism
enables protection of application security mechanisms against tampering
and bypass, and it enables confinement of the damage that can be caused
by flawed and malicious applications. The SELinux web site
<http://www.nsa.gov/selinux> contains background information,
documentation, source code, and archives for the selinux mailing list.

Hello,
we are calling for Experience Report for OSS 2005, The First
International Conference on Open Source Systems. It's a chance for OSS
developers to meet industrial and government needs, and to promote
their products and software production model.
Thanks for your time

OSS 2005
The First International Conference on Open Source Systems
Genova, July 11 - 15, 2005
CALL FOR EXPERIENCE REPORT
http://oss2005.case.unibz.it
Submissions of experience reports are solicited for the "First
International
Conference on Open Source Systems, OSS2005", to be held in Genova,
Italy
from the 11th to the 15th of July 2005.
GOAL AND SCOPE
Experience reports provide a lightweight format for presenting minor
results or
latebreaking work that is not developed enough for a full paper. For
example, this
might include an account of a project with a discussion of the
significant lessons
to be drawn from the experience.
PhD candidates are particularly encouraged to submit reports describing
their ongoing
work, in addition to attending the PhD symposium.
Submissions are sought in all relevant areas of Open Source Systems.
Accepted Experience Reports will be presented as posters during
interactive sessions.
Posters will be pinned up in the poster session area. During poster
sessions, the authors
will stand by their posters so that conference participants can find
them and discuss
posters they find interesting. Authors will have space for laptops if
they also want to
provide demonstrations.
HOW TO SUBMIT
The Experience Report abstract, of no more than two pages, should
include a title,
author names and affiliations and an optional URL for further reading
or reference.
Submissions of experience reports should be sent before the respective
deadlines
by e-mail to the Organizing Chair at the e-mail address
scotto@dist.unige.it.
Please attach your paper in PDF-format to an e-mail in plain text
format.
IMPORTANT DATES
Experience reports submissions: April 10th

Subject: (Announce) Linux thin-client on USB key drive
Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2005 08:04:43 CST
I'm very pleased to announce Linux thin-client solution,
http://home.eol.ca/~parkw/thinflash.html
which boots from 256MB USB key drive. It is essentially 200MB minimal
Slackware installed onto USB key. And, it can turn any PC into
thin-client for Windows (as RDP client) and Linux server (as
X-terminal).

Vice chancellor, Visveswaraiah Technologies University, Belagum, Karnataka.
Dear Sir,
There are thousands of engineering and polytechnic colleges in India. Each year
lakhs of graduates and diploma holders earn their degree. They pay thousands of
rupees as fees to get the best facilities. A part of this goes to buying the
software's which they use either in college lab or for doing assignments at
home.For every software which they use; there is alternate Free Software
program available. Now this shows the amount of money which we can be saved if
we start using Free Software. This will bring down cost education considerably.
Other than cost benefits, Free Software has other advantages
* No-fee licensing
* Ease of license fee management
* Better large-scale programmability
* Easier integration
* Better performance
* Development convenience
* Better support
There are hundreds of Free Software's programs which colleges or universities
can adopt. As Vishweshwaraiah Technological University is one of the biggest
universities in India, its time for VTU to moving towards using Free Software.
This will make other Universities to follow. Let the VTU have pride to be the
first. Here I am giving you an example of three such alternative Free
Software's which can be used.
* (1) Operating System: Windows v/s GNU/Linux
I don't know what university generally recommends to colleges. But presently
almost all the colleges use Microsoft Windows based operating system. We all
know the best available operating system today is GNU/Linux. It is the best OS
any educational institution can have. Students can not only use it but also can
study.
* (2) Simulation: Matlab v/s Octave
Matlab is used in communication and electronics lab. Matlab for individual
license for university (academic use) costs $500. Any college will have to buy
minimum 25 licenses. Which means shelling out Rs.537500. Octave, which is
simulation software written by University professors. This usually comes with
the GNU/Linux Operating System. The advantage to students is that they don't
have to buy a limited student version to use at home. They can use Octave both
at Lab and at home. SciLab? is another open source competitor for Matlab. It
uses sophisticated algorithms to analyze data and produce lovely graphics. Now
you have the choice which one you want to include in your curriculum.
* (3) Office software's: MS Office v/s Open Office
Well, we all used Microsoft word to submit our project documents for review and
for other academic purposes. Now we have Open Office which is as good as MS
office and has some feature Microsoft Office lacks like PDF support,
compatibility with older versions of Microsoft Office, HTML editor, a vector
drawing application .... It gives you everything starting from word processor,
presentation software to PDF generator [Fully compatible with Microsoft Office
-- So already existing data in those formats can be used]. Don't you think it's
the right time to save money of a poor student ?
The above are just examples. There are many such software programs from which
the students can benefit. We hope the university understands the urgency and
the need. We would be happy to give you any information/help if university
needs. Here by we urge the university to make an effort in this direction.
Thank you,

Mar 11 17:34:50 IST 2005 We use GNU/Linux in our main Computer center. It saves
a lot of money of the college as there is no licence fee to be paid for each
users. Since the source code of the softwares are available many computer
science students do projects based on Linux kernel and other such projects. The
possibility of use of thin-clients (which our computer center use) reduces the
cost of hardware dramatically. It has proved to be beneficail to our college
and I urge you to chose Free Software for giving a better alternative for
students.
