McObject's eXtremeDB Version 2.2 Boosts Performance and Flexibility
Of In-Memory Database for Embedded Systems
Issaquah, WA-September 29, 2003-McObject® has released version 2.2 of
eXtremeDBT, its embedded in-memory database system (IMDS). Additions in this
release include performance enhancements and features that add to developers
' flexibility in building reliable, real-time data management for embedded
applications.
eXtremeDB provides critical data management features-including transactions,
concurrent access, and a high-level data definition language-while
maintaining a tiny (approx.100K) code footprint for resource-constrained
embedded systems. As an IMDS, eXtremeDB delivers the real-time
responsiveness demanded by consumer electronics, network infrastructure
gear, industrial controllers and other intelligent devices.
In addition to architectural changes to support the optional High
Availability edition of eXtremeDB, version 2.2 includes:
Default values. A data field can assume a value specified in the database
schema, even when one is not explicitly set by the application;
Enumerated types. Allows the developer to express the range of legal values
centrally, in the database definition. Without this, enforcing the domain of
legal values falls to the application, opening the door to possible
mistakes;
C++ interface. The eXtremeDB schema compiler can now create a C++ API in
addition to its C interface, enhancing development for C++ users;
Performance improvements. A variety of concurrent database access control
implementations can be selected to match the database runtime with the
characteristics of the operating environment, such as single or multiple
CPU, and the ratio of concurrent read access requests to concurrent write
access requests. eXtremeDB's tree index implementation has been optimized,
yielding a substantial performance improvement.
Since McObject introduced eXtremeDB just two years ago, innovative companies
including Genesis Microchip, DaimlerChrysler and Tyco Thermal Controls have
adopted McObject's in-memory data management solution. Customers benefit
from eXtremeDB's reliability, developer flexibility and unparalleled
performance, and from unique features such as a self-diagnostic API that
eliminates a wide range of programming errors that slip by other databases
into application code.
An evaluation version of eXtremeDB 2.2 is available from
http://www.mcobject.com/downloads.php for free download.
McObject provides complete source code for eXtremeDB. The database runs on
platforms including VxWorks, QNX and other RTOS, and virtually all other
operating systems, including Linux and Windows Embedded. eXtremeDB can also
function with no operating system.

FROM: MOHAMMED SALIFU.
THIS IS A BUSINESS PROPOSAL.
ATTN: THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER/MANAGING DIRECTOR
I will like to begin by way of introduction, my name is MOHAMMED SALIFU. I am an officer with the MINISTRY OF MINERALS AND ENERGY RECOURSES, SOUTH AFRICA.
The purpose of this letter is to solicit your assistance in a matter of utmost-financial-interest, which would be of immense benefit to us upon completion.
The financial interest, which is valued at US$7.5 Million, represents a contract completion pay settlement for Mr. Brian Mason. Under the terms of the transfer of claims entitlement entered into between Mr. Brian Mason and the MINISTRY OF MINERALS AND ENERGY RECOURSES, SOUTH AFRICA [my employer], Mr. Brian Mason was scheduled to claim the balance of his entitlement in the amount mentioned above since July 2002. Since then, several attempts have been made without success to contact Mr. Mason or any of his close relatives in whose favor the cash value of his entitlement can be paid.
I am quite aware that you may feel completely taken back and unsure about what my intentions may be. Honestly, I must confess that my colleagues and I have being monitoring this account for six months now. And now that Mr. Mason still has not come forward to claim his entitlement, my colleague and I have decided to work together to get this achieved for our benefit since we are in the relevant departments, and familiar with the procedures of filing and claiming entitlements, we are confident that with your cooperation, the entitlement can be ours for good. Please we urge you to keep this matter very confidential as the MINISTRY OF MINERALS AND ENERGY RECOURSES, SOUTH AFRICA, still currently employs us.
I want to assure you that my colleague and I are in a position to make the payment of this entitlement possible, provided you are ready to meet with us, and give us very strong guarantee that our share will be secured, and that you will not take advantage of our position, since the cash value of the entitlement will be paid to a bank account directly under your control.
Please, be rest assured that there is absolutely nothing to worry about in view of this claim. It is perfectly safe with no risk involved, and it is not subject to any form of enquiring, since we will be handling the claim process directly in London on your behalf as I am currently undergoing a government sponsored course in Energy Recourses.
I do hope this proposal is acceptable to you, please acknowledge the receipt of this letter so that I can provide you with more clarification about the claim, and how we intend to make good deal beneficial to everyone involved. Please reach me at this private and confidential electronic medium.
Sincerely yours,
Mr. MOHAMMED SALIFU.

Subject: announcing new BrlSpeak Debian-based Braille-Loopback Mini-Distribution
Date: Thu, 2 Oct 2003 15:06:48 +0200 (CEST)
Hello!
Today Oct. the 1st, 2003, the BrailleSpeak Project have released its
NEW "BrlSpeak Debian-based Braille-Loopback Mini-Distribution".
This Debian-based loopback distribution of GNU/Linux is no longer
UMSDOS as by the past (cf. previous Slack-based BrlSpeak) but it still aims
to provide a (temporary) solution for those who want/need/prefer
installing/trying a mini-distribution on their FAT partition, without having
to repartition the hard disk.
The major advantage is now that this is a Debian GNU/Linux system,
(probably the first running on a FAT32), so once started you may use the
apt facility to upgrade and install extra packages with their dependencies,
exactly as under a "real" EXT Debian GNU/Linux system.
In fact, the BrlSpeak installer creates a \linux directory where it puts a
loopback, and the entire system comes in that loop-file; after that, the
kernel is loaded using linld (something similar to loadlin) to boot-up the
system.
There are currently 3 bases available:
* basic (minimalistic, *currently recommended*, see below)
* braille (same as basic + some extras)
* vocal (braille + some applications for adding speech to it)
There is also a brlspeak-deb CD ISO available now!
IMPORTANT:
currently ONLY the basic version installs correctly, this is a known problem
and our volunteer team will resolve this asap.
But if some would like to try the other bases, or if you'd like to become a
contributor, we will very appreciate some help!
(not so much looking for translators now, but we need some new developers
for maintaining the project)
Regarding the vocal base: we provide Screader and Mbrola but there
is *not yet* speech support during installation.
There's an alternate solution called Oralux (see oralux.org) we encourage
people to use if they want speech at boottime.
Braille support is available using BrlTty: as by the past you may
preconfigure the settings from within the installer so that you have
braille at the first login.
A CD-ROM image containing the 3 (zip-compressed) bases + an
installer batch for DOS/FreeDOS + an install menu for Windows is available
here:
http://brlspeak.net/brlspeak-deb/iso/ (170M)
Note that running the installer is required, no matter which OS and even
after having unpacked the zip under WIN.
A quick guide + documentation is available here:
http://brlspeak.net/release/<base>/readme.txt
and
http://brlspeak.net/release/doc+faq
About the installer:
* if you run DOS/FreeDOS or WIN9X, you may run the installer from CD
* in other situations or when running WINXP (FAT32), see if you can
take advantages by using an installer floppy-disk
Contact us:
* send comments or submit your proposal of contrib to:

Subject: TuxMobil News 09/2003
Hello,
this month's TuxMobil News digest[1] has again good news for Linux PDA, mobile
phone and laptop users. Here is an extract of the monthly digest, but note
there are much more noteworthy issues, so do not miss to check the whole
digest[1].
|=| At TheRegister have been rumours[2] about SHARP bringing new
Zaurus Linux PDAs to Europe finally. Nevertheless TriSoft and Xtops.DE make
also the SHARP SL-C760 available in Europe without official
assistance from SHARP[3].
|=| The Zaurus Synchronization Reverse Engineering Project[4] has
released a first issue of a tool to get open access to the PIM data. While
the Unofficial Zaurus FAQ gets new maintainers and location[5]. Thanks
to Bill Kendrick[6] who started the wellknown FAQ. A whitepaper from
IBM explored how to pilot a model plane with a Linux PDA[7].
|=| Linux laptop users with internal modems made by Conexant may try
out the new drivers by LinuxAnt[8]. You may find more tips and tricks about
getting to run internal modems on Linux laptops at TuxMobil[9]. To support
special keys, LEDs and extra ACPI features of ASUS laptops Julien Lerouge
has released a new issue of `acpi4linux'[10]. A survey of other methods
to get these features to work on different notebooks is included
in a dedicated chapter of the Linux-Mobile-Guide[11].
|=| OpenWave has announced Phone Suite version 7 for Linux-based phones[12]. For
mobile phones not based on Linux there is a new survey of connectivity
methods and tools at TuxMobil[13]. For Sony/Ericsson T68/T68i phones
Tobias Bayer has released a new issue of his KDE tool Leif[14].
