Welcome back from the summer break. I hope everyone had a most
enjoyable summer season, despite the rains and humidity.

REMINDER: Our two listservers have changed. If you haven't yet
responded to your invitation to subscribe to the new PASUGANN
and PASUGTALK listservers, do it now! Please don't delay.

To kickoff our new 2003-2004 season, a most informative and
interesting "triple header" presentation has been planned to
provide descriptions and commentary of three current lawsuits
which may have far-reaching impact upon all computer users.

SCO vs IBM Lawsuit (Copyright Issues)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PASUG member David Moskowitz, supported by John Davey, will review
the current status and what it might mean to Linux users (and our
members who might be considering Linux). He'll also review third
party moves which have aligned themselves with either SCO or IBM.
Bottom line: What the lawsuit alleges; SCO and IBM responses;
current state; and what it means if SCO prevails (and timeframe
for any courtroom action --- HINT: Not this year :-))
BeOS NEWS and UPDATE (BeOS vs Microsoft Anti-trust Case)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PASUG member Ben Bowers, a BeOS user, has been following the
status of BeOS and the progress of the recently settled anti-
trust case. Ben will discuss the implications of the $23M dollar
settlement in the BeOS lawsuit against Microsoft. He will also
tell us who may still be working to bring back the vision of the
BeOS community (Is there really such a BeOS community?); and
what's the best way to keep up on BeOS news.

These and other matters will be briefly discussed as well as the
vitality of the BeOS community and the progress realized toward
their improbable goal to recreate BeOS from the kernel up.
Can it finally be fully owned and guided by the community that
just can't let it go?

EOLAS/UofCAL vs MICROSOFT LAWSUIT (Patent Issues)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The recent $520 million award to Eolas and UofCal stemmed from
a 1998 lawsuit in which Eolas and UofCal charged Microsoft with
patent infringement. PASUG member Doug Leach (a registered patent
agent) with support from John Davey, will review the background
of the Doyle patent (now licensed to Eolas), and what it claims.
This will include an analysis of the patent from the perspective
of how broad and strong the claims are, based on examination of
the patent in the Patent Office. He'll also discuss the infringe-
ment suit, and what occurred at the various stages, and the
significance of those stages. Lastly, some options and opinions
about what may result from this case, in regard to web browser
plugins & Java applets.
LEGAL BACKGROUND EXPLANATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Member John Davey, an attorney, will give an overview of civil
procedure in the federal courts so that it will be easier to
understand the news items about these legal matters. It's some-
times difficult to put the news into perspective, and an under-
standing of the course that lawsuits take will be helpful.
For instance, how can Red Hat be suing SCO, when it's SCO who
is claiming copyright infringement?

Other agenda items include announcements, news & new software
releases, and raffle. Come to the meeting on Thursday evening
September 25th to hear about the details and fallout comments

Subject: LilyPond 2.0 - make beautiful music prints

Reply-To: hanwen@cs.uu.nl

Dear music enthousiasts,

LilyPond version 2.0 was released today. LilyPond is an automated
music notation system: it is used to make gorgeous sheet music. It is
libre software ("open source"), and available for most Unix flavors,
including Linux and MacOS X, and MS Windows.

Use it for your music too!

For this version, we have dramatically simplified many parts of the
syntax, making it easier to use than ever before. Other improvements
include quarter-tone accidentals, and conditional inclusion of music
fragments. With version 2.0, we have a solid platform for working on
notation and typography features for coming versions.

Downloads, examples and documentation are available from the website,

        http://lilypond.org

A big thank-you goes out to our hackers and bughunters: Mats
Bengtsson, Heikki Junes, Juergen Reuter, Antonio Palama, Benjamin
Milde, Daniel Berjon Diez, David Bobroff, David Rayleigh Arnold, Erik
Ronstroem, Fabio dos Santos, Fodor Bertalan, Frederic Bron, Graham
Parcival, Ian Bailey-Mortimer, John Williams, Josza Marton, Marco
Caliari, Matthieu Amiguet, Michael Welsh Duggan, Patrick Atamaniuk,
Paul Scott, Pedro Kroeger, Peter Lutek, Richard Schoeller, Thorkil
Wolvendans, and Werner Trobin

Happy music printing,

Han-Wen Nienhuys & Jan Nieuwenhuizen
(core development team)

New features in 2.0 since 1.8
*****************************

   * Crescendos can now be drawn dotted or dashed.

   * Quarter tones are now supported. They are entered by suffixing
     `ih' for a half-sharp and `eh' for a half-flat. Hence, the
     following is an ascending list of pitches:

            ceses ceseh ces ceh c cih cis cisih cisis

   * The following constructs have been removed from the syntax:

            \duration #SCHEME-DURATION
            \pitch #SCHEME-PITCH
            \outputproperty FUNC SYMBOL = VALUE

     For `\outputproperty', the following may be substituted:

             \applyoutput #(outputproperty-compatibility FUNC
                            SYMBOL VALUE)

   * Clefs may now be transposed arbitrarily, for example

            \clef "G_8"
            \clef "G_15"
            \clef "G_9"

   * The syntax for chords and simultaneous music have changed. Chords
     are entered as

             <PITCHES>

     while simultaneous music is entered as

             <<..MUSIC LIST..>>

     In effect, the meanings of both have been swapped relative to
     their 1.8 definition. The syntax for lists in `\markup' has
     changed alongside, but figured bass mode was not changed, i.e.:

            \markup { \center <..LIST OF MARKUPS..> }
            \figure { <FIGURES> }

     As chords the more often used than simultaneous music, this change
     will save keystrokes.

   * Each music expression can now be tagged, to make different printed
     versions from the same music expression. In the following example,
     we see two versions of a piece of music, one for the full score,
     and one with cue notes for the instrumental part:

          << \tag #'part <<
            { c4 f2 g4 }      % in the part, we have cue-notes
            \\ R1 >>
            \tag #'score R1  % in the score: only a rest
          >>

     The same can be applied to articulations, texts, etc.: they are
     made by prepending

                  -\tag #YOUR-TAGS

     to an articulation, for example,

                  c4-\tag #'with-fingerings -4 -\tag #'with-strings \6

     This defines a note, which has a conditional fingering and a
     string-number indication.

   * The settings for chord-fingering are more flexible. You can
     specify a list where fingerings may be placed, eg.

                \property Voice.fingeringOrientations = #'(left down)

     This will put the fingering for the lowest note below the chord,
     and the rest to the left.

   * The script previously known as `ly2dvi' has been renamed to
     `lilypond'. The binary itself is now installed as `lilypond-bin'.

   * Markup text (ie. general text formatting) may now be used for
     lyrics too.

   * Two new commands for grace notes have been added, `\acciaccatura'
     and `\appoggiatura',

            \appoggiatura f8 e4
            \acciaccatura g8 f4

     Both reflect the traditional meanings of acciaccatura and
     appogiatura, and both insert insert a slur from the first grace
     note to the main note.

   * Layout options for grace notes are now stored in a context
     property, and may now be set separately from musical content.

   * The `\new' command will create a context with a unique name
     automatically. Hence, for multi-staff scores, it is no longer
     necessary to invent arbitrary context names. For example, a
     two-staff score may be created by

            \simultaneous {
              \new Staff { NOTES FOR 1ST STAFF }
              \new Staff { NOTES FOR 2ND STAFF }
            }

   * Octave checks make octave errors easier to correct. The syntax is

            \octave PITCH

     This checks that PITCH (without octave) yields PITCH (with octave)
     in \relative mode. If not, a warning is printed, and the octave is
     corrected.

   * All articulations must now be entered postfix. For example,

                c8[( d8])

     is a pair of beamed slurred eighth notes.

   * The definition of `\relative' has been simplified. Octaves are
     now always propagated in the order that music is entered. In the
     following example,

            PRE
            \repeat "unfold" 3  BODY \alternative { ALT1 ALT2 }
            POST

     the octave of BODY is based on PRE, the starting octave of ALT1 on
     BODY, the starting octave of ALT2 on ALT1, and the starting octave
     of POST on ALT2.

     The same mechanism is used for all other music expressions, except
     the chord. Backwards compatibility is retained through a special
     program option, which is set through

            #(ly:set-option 'old-relative)

   * Windows users can double click a `.ly' file to process and view it
     automagically through the new `lily-wins' frontend.

Subject: Pegasos PowerPC Linux Computer Event in Washington, DC

Genesi is coming to the Hilton Garden Inn in Washington, DC on October 18th
to present it's PowerPC based computer platform - the Pegasos!

The Pegasos will be the highlight of this event. This is the latest model
from Genesi - and supports both G3 and G4 PowerPC processors. The Pegasos is
a highly affordable computer system based on the CHRP standard and supports
at least seven flavors of Linux including Debian, Mandrake, Gentoo, Yellow
Dog and others.

To compliment the Pegasos and provide a complete solution, Genesi has
developed MorphOS - a preemptive multitasking operating system. MorphOS
combines a modest footprint with scalability, high performance, and amazing
ease of use for developers and end users. Its beautifully designed interface
and modular object-oriented design offers a modern solution out of the box.

Some operating systems work through emulation including Amiga and Macintosh,
and other operating systems such as QNX, OpenBeOS and NewOS are under
development already.

You are invited to see our presentations and have actual hands-on experience
with the Pegasos system. We'll have many machines available showing you the
latest operating systems, applications, networking, Internet solutions and
games.

So come to the Hilton Garden Inn convienently located at the McPherson
Square Metro Stop (Orange and Blue lines). The event is scheduled from 10am
to 4pm on Saturday the 18th of October. We'll see you there!

From: Russell Marks <russell.marks@spam^H^H^H^Hntlworld.com>
Subject: xzgv 0.8 - picture viewer for X with thumbnail-based file selector
Date: 1 Oct 2003 17:10:01 GMT

xzgv is a picture viewer for X, with a thumbnail-based file selector.
It uses GTK+ and Imlib 1.x. Most file formats are supported, and the
thumbnails used are compatible with xv, zgv, and the Gimp. It can also
be used with `xzgv file(s)', to effectively bypass the file selector.

xzgv differs from other picture viewers for X in that it uses one
window for both the file selector and viewer, it (unlike xv) allows
both scrolling and fit-to-window methods of viewing large pictures,
and it (unlike xv and some others) doesn't ever mangle the picture's
aspect ratio without you telling it to. It also provides extensive
keyboard support; if you prefer using the keyboard, this is probably
the best viewer for you. But it doesn't skimp on the mousey stuff,
either. So anyway, it's just terribly great. :-)

xzgv's homepage is here:

  http://xzgv.browser.org/

You can also download it from ibiblio:

  ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/apps/graphics/viewers/X/xzgv-0.8.tar.gz

0.8 is largely a bugfix release, as well as a hint that xzgv isn't
actually dead. :-)

* Changes in xzgv 0.8

** New features

Added support for the Exif orientation tag (Exif in this context is a
form of JPEG). If you enable the "Use Exif Orientation" option in the
viewer (or `exif-orient' config/option), it'll compensate for the
(e.g.) digital camera's orientation when viewing, so pictures taken
with the camera side-on will display the way you would probably want
them to. However, since this differs from how most *other* programs
will see the files - which are, after all, carefully constructed to be
compatible with JFIF/JPEG files - and has the potential to be
extremely confusing if you don't know exactly what's going on, it's
not enabled by default. Thanks to Fraser Wright for suggesting this
feature.

** Bugfixes

Broken GIFs could overrun a buffer previously - fixed.

Added call to gtk_set_locale() which should hopefully avoid problems
when GTK+'s default font is set to something which isn't
ASCII-friendly. Thanks to Alexander Pohoyda for this one.

Fixed JPEG segfault bug on files which were corrupted after the image
itself. Thanks to Aaron Brick for spotting this one.

Fixed long-standing bug with interpolation, which could have resulted
in segfaults (though it's hard to say if it ever actually did).

Stopped selector getting permanently hidden if two middle-button
presses were too close together. Thanks to José Luis González González
for spotting this.

No longer sets background colour to black for mono PNG files, where
this may cause problems. This change was ported from zgv; thanks to
Morten Bo Johansen for spotting it there.

** Other changes

Added 9/0 keys as yet another way of doing file untag/tag. These are
last-ditch alternatives for keyboards where -/= don't make sense (some
non-US/UK keyboards), and where keypad -/+ aren't easily accessible
(e.g. laptops). Thanks to Szabó, Balázs for inspiring this one.

Hi all,

Good news: sysstat release 4.1.7 is now available for all of you Linux users.
Sysstat 4.1.7 is still a development version but it should be considered as a
possible release candidate for the next sysstat 5.0.0 stable release!

It is available for download from my web page at:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

It is also available on ibiblio's Linux archive site:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
109kB sysstat-4.1.7.tar.gz
89kB sysstat-4.1.7.tar.bz2
111kB sysstat-4.1.7-1.src.rpm
61kB sysstat-4.1.7-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools for
Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

OK. I am now waiting for your feedback. My goal is to start again with a new
stable series (5.0.x) before the end of the year.

Changes vs 4.1.6 are:
2003/09/28: Version 4.1.7
WARNING: Daily data files format has changed, and is *not* compatible with the
previous one! [0x2163]
* /proc/diskstats is now the preferred source for iostat to get its statistics.
If non-existent, iostat falls back on sysfs then on /proc/stat.
* In addition to devices, partitions can also be entered on the command line
for iostat providing that option -x is not used.
* /dev prefix has been removed from device name displayed by iostat -x.
* sar -d now looks for disks statistics in /proc/diskstats with post 2.5
kernels.
* sar uses /proc/vmstat file with post 2.5 kernels to find paging and swapping
statistics.
* activepg, inadtypg, inaclnpg and inatarpg stats removed from sar -B report
(they were not really useful).
* sar -B now displays the number of page faults made by the system (pgfault/s
and pgmajflt/s).
* Stat on shared memory removed from sar -r and sar -R (this stat was no longer
maintained by the kernel since 2.4 because of performance problems).
* Cached swap statistic information added to sar -r.
* sar -d now displays separate statistics for sectors that are read from or
written to devices.
* %file-sz (percentage of used file handles) is no longer displayed by sar -v,
since the upper limit for the number of open files will self-scale with kernels
2.6.
* sar now looks more aggressively for network devices in /proc/net/dev.
* Heading spaces in network interface names removed (sar -n).
* Fixed a problem reading /proc/interrupts when there are a lot of CPUs
(mpstat, sadc).
* NR_IRQS value increased to 256, since IA64 supports 256 irqs per CPU.
* Some stats counters are now read as unsigned long instead of unsigned int
(pgpgin, pgpgout, pswpin, pswpout, irq_sum).
* sar and iostat manual pages updated.
* FAQ, README and CREDITS files updated.
* NLS updated.
