InterSystems Breaks Into Top Five RDBMS Vendor List For Windows Platform

       Statistics Cite CACHÉ as Fastest Growing Database on Windows

Cambridge, Mass.—September 2, 2003—InterSystems Corporation today
announced that a just-released report from Gartner has placed them among
the top five database software vendors on the Windows platform.

The leading database technology provider in healthcare and a significant
player in other industry segments, InterSystems develops and markets the
high performance CACHÉ database. CACHÉ is optimized for rapidly building
highly scalable Web applications.

27 Percent Growth Reverses Industry Trend

The Gartner report, entitled “2002 Database Management Systems Market
Share” states that the worldwide DBMS software market declined 6 percent
in new license revenue and that the majority of vendors saw flat or
declining growth in 2002. The RDBMS market grew by only 2 percent in the
same time period, the report continues.

In sharp contrast, Gartner reported that InterSystems revenues went up
by 27 percent for new licenses on the Windows platform. “Based on those
figures, InterSystems is the fastest growing database provider for
Windows,” says Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice president of strategic
planning. “CACHÉ, which uniquely provides the capability to rapidly
build high performance applications with advanced object technology as
well as robust SQL, has been enthusiastically embraced by professional
developers. And CACHÉ’s combination of high performance and low
maintenance lowers the total cost of system ownership—a competitive
differentiator that is clearly leading to market growth.”

About InterSystems

Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., InterSystems Corporation
(www.InterSystems.com) is a leading provider of low-maintenance, high
performance database systems for Web applications, with over four
million users worldwide. InterSystems' flagship product, CACHÉ, is a

Subject: DB2 ICE for Linux puts the freeze on Oracal 9i and MS SQL
Date: 2 Sep 2003 15:15:05 GMT

The DB2 Integrated Cluster Environment( ICE ) for Linux recently won
the "Best Cluster Solution" at the San Francisco LinuxWorld 2003
conference. This integrated solution provides IT the ability to deploy
a highly scaleable Linux database cluster platform(up to 1,000 sever
nodes), at a pricepoint that won't break their budget. When combined
with IBM's new e325 Linux super-computer, an AMD 64-bit Opteron-based
processor, developers can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications with
DB2's native 64-bit support. Learn more about DB2 ICE software
components, the DB2 ICE solutions blueprint, and DB2 ICE world record
performance over the Oracal 9i and MS SQL.

From: robotti@godmail.com
Subject: [Announce]: RIP CD/floppy Linux rescue system!
Date: 2 Sep 2003 17:40:01 GMT
Reply-To: robotti@godmail.com

This is a CD Linux rescue system!

There are also 1.44MB and 1.68MB floppy versions at the site.

http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip

=========================================================================
                       (R)ecovery (I)s (P)ossible!
                       (R)ecovery (I)s (P)ossible!
The bootable cd image `RIP-6.1.iso.bin' can be written to a CD/DVD disk,
using cdrecord/dvdrecord etc.

The 2.4.22 kernel has IDE and SCSI support.
The kernel also has PCMCIA, LVM, RAID, and Ethernet/cable/dsl
networking support.

These are some of the programs it contains (partimage/partimaged, parted,
dump/restore, reiserfsck, fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk, mke2fs, e2fsck, tune2fs,
debugfs, mkfs.xfs, jfs_mkfs, jfs_fsck, xfs_repair, cdrecord/dvdrecord,
mkisofs, dvd+rw-format, growisofs, ntfsresize, mkntfs, losetup + AES
encryption, lynx, mutt, fetchmail, ncftp, epic irc, tin, telnet, wget, zgv,
testdisk, smbclient, smbmount, ssh/sshd, rsync, udp-sender/receiver, lde,
blesstivo, chntpw, cmospwd, grub, grubconfig, smartctl).

It also includes the DVD udf filesystem packet writing tools
(cdrwtool, mkudffs, pktsetup).

The 'reiserfsck' program is used to check and repair
a Linux reiserfs filesystem.

The 'xfs_repair' program is used to repair a Linux
xfs filesystem.

The 'jfs_fsck' program is used to check and repair
a Linux jfs filesystem.

The 'e2fsck' program is used to check and repair
a Linux ext2 or ext3 filesystem.

The 'ntfsresize' program non-destructively resizes Windows XP/2000/NT4
or Windows Server 2003 NTFS filesystems. Read /usr/doc/RIP/ntfsresize.txt
on the rescue system.

The 'parted' program is used for creating, destroying, resizing (fat16/32,
ext2/3, reiserfs v3.6), checking and copying partitions, and the file
systems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating
systems, reorganising disk usage, copying data between hard disks and
disk imaging.

The partition image program 'partimage' saves partitions in the ext2,
ext3, reiserfs, jfs, xfs, ufs, ntfs, fat16, and fat32 formats to an
image file. Only used blocks are copied to save space and increase
the speed. The image file can be compressed, in gzip or bzip2 formats.

==================== Encrypted file/partition! ===================
If you have an encrypted partition you want to mount.

For example if it's encrypted with AES128 on /dev/hda3.

# losetup-aes -e AES128 /dev/loop0 /dev/hda3
Password: ???
# mount -t ext2 /dev/loop0 /mnt/linux

Read /usr/man/RIP/losetup-aes on the rescue system.
=================================================================

============ WinNT/XP & BIOS password change programs! ==============
The chntpw program will enable you to view some information and
change user passwords in a Windows NT/XP SAM userdatabase file.
Read /usr/doc/RIP/chntpw.txt.

cmospwd is a cmos/bios password recovery tool.
Read /usr/doc/RIP/cmospwd.txt.
=====================================================================

========= Writing RIP-6.1.iso to a CD, using Linux or Windows! ==========

You can use 'cdrecord/dvdrecord' to write 'RIP-6.1.iso.bin' to a cd
or dvd disk under Linux.

The example below assumes an IDE cd writer on device 0,0,0 with a 4x speed.

# cdrecord -scanbus "To find the device your cd writer is on!"

Cdrecord 1.10 () Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jorg Schilling
scsibus0:
        0,0,0     0) 'HP      ' 'CD-Writer+ 9100c' 'H2,1' Removable CD-ROM
etc...

# cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,0,0 RIP-6.1.iso.bin        "CD-R/RW drive"
# dvdrecord -v -dao speed=4 dev=0,0,0 RIP-6.1.iso.bin  "DVD-R/RW drive"
# growisofs -Z /dev/scd0=RIP-6.1.iso.bin               "DVD+R/RW drive"

If you need to erase the cd-rw first, do this.

# cdrecord -v blank=fast speed=4 dev=0,0,0 RIP-6.1.iso.bin

If you want to use Windows to write RIP-6.1.iso to a CD, follow the
instructions below! These instructions come from the Mandrake Linux
website.

With Easy CD Creator:
====================
Open Easy CD Creator
Go to "File" then to "Create CD from disc image"
make sure to change the bottom drop down menu ("Files of type:")
to say "ISO image files"

It will do the rest after you browse to the *.iso file
(Thanks for zacheyer)

With WinOnCD:
============
you can select a "track-image" project when you click the New button.
So long as you are in track mode, not file-system mode (how that looks
depends on whether you have 3.0 or 3.5) then dragging a track image file
onto the CD window should accept it as a raw track. WinOnCD uses .RAW as
its own extension.
(Thanks Rick Jones)

With Nero Burning Rom:
======================
Open Nero.
Close the wizard if it is started automatically. Go to "File"
then to "Burn Image...". In the next dialog, click on "Image Files
(*.nrg)" and select "All files (*.*)". Choose the .iso file and accept.
In the following dialog make sure:
- Type of Image is: Data Mode 1
- Block size: 2048
- Image header: 0
- Image trailer: 0
- All the checkboxes are unactive.
Click "OK".
In the next dialog check that the "write" and "finalize" option are active.
Click on "Write".
(Thanks Antonio Asensi)

You can then boot the cd disk if your bios supports it,
and is set to boot from the cdrom drive first.

========================= Booting from DOS/Win9x ==========================

It can also be booted from a DOS/Win9x system.

You must be in DOS mode, shutdown windows and restart in DOS mode.

For example if your cd drive is e.

C:\ e:
E:\ rip  "For help!"
E:\ rip rescue

=============================== Q & A =================================

Q. Is it possible to change something or add some shell scripts etc.
   to the system?

A. # mkdir /rip1 /rip2
   # mount -o loop RIP-6.1.iso.bin /rip1
   # cp -a /rip1/* /rip2
   # umount /rip1 ; rmdir /rip1
   # mkdir -p /rip2/boot/1
   # tar xzvpf /rip2/boot/rootfs.tgz -C /rip2/boot/1
   # rm /rip2/boot/rootfs.tgz

   Add the scripts etc. to the /rip2/boot/1/usr/bin etc. directory.
   Then tar gzip the system.

   # cd /rip2/boot/1 ; tar cvzpf * ../rootfs.tgz
   # rm -rf /rip2/boot/1

   # cd /rip2 ; mkisofs -R -J -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 32 \
                        -boot-info-table -b boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 \
                        -o ../rip.iso .
                                     ^^^
                                Don't forget the `.'!
                                Don't forget the `.'!
   Write /rip.iso to a CD!

NOTE: If you add programs to the system you need to add any libraries they
      may require to /lib, unless they're statically linked.

NOTE: If the new rip.iso you created doesn't boot, use
      `-b isolinux/isolinux.bin' above. Everything is the
      same except it will use a different boot loader.

Q. Is it possible to replace the kernel?

The replacement kernel must have at least RAM disk, initrd, ext2, and
TMPFS support.

A. # mkdir /rip1 /rip2
   # mount -o loop RIP-6.1.iso.bin /rip1
   # cp -a /rip1/* /rip2
   # umount /rip1 ; rmdir /rip1

   Replace the kernel in the /rip2/boot directory.

   Create and write /rip.iso to a cd like above!

====================================================================

Q. Can I put other bootable images (dos/win etc.) on the cd, and boot
   them also?

A. # mkdir /rip1 /rip2
   # mount -o loop RIP-6.1.iso.bin /rip1
   # cp -a /rip1/* /rip2
   # umount /rip1

   Add the bootable image to: /rip2/boot/image_name.img
   Add these three lines to: /rip2/boot/grub/menu.lst

   title Boot WinXP image!
   kernel memdisk
   initrd=/boot/image_name.img

   Create and write /rip.iso to a cd like above!

   You can then boot the WinXP image by choosing it
   from the GRUB menu.

NOTE: You can put the FreeBSD bootable image (freebsd.img)
      from `fbsd-2.3.iso.bin' on the cd like above.

      http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip

      # mount -o loop fbsd-2.3.iso.bin /rip1
      # cp /rip1/boot/freebsd.img /rip2/boot

      Add these three lines to: /rip2/boot/grub/menu.lst

      title Boot FreeBSD image!
      kernel memdisk
      initrd=/boot/freebsd.img

   You can then boot the freebsd image by choosing it
   from the GRUB menu.

Q. Is it possible to install the system on the hard drive?

A. You need to create a Linux partition using 'fdisk' etc. Then
   you need to put a ext3 etc. filesystem on it. Then you need
   to mount the partition and extract 'rootfs.tgz' to it.

   This example assumes you created a Linux partition on /dev/hda2,
   with a ext3 filesystem.

   Mount the RIP cd or iso image that has /boot/rootfs.tgz on it.

   # mount -rt iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom     "Mount cd!"
   # mount -o loop RIP-6.1.iso.bin /mnt/cdrom  "Mount iso image!"
   # mount -t ext3 /dev/hda2 /mnt/linux
   # tar xzvpf /mnt/cdrom/boot/rootfs.tgz -C /mnt/linux
   # cp /mnt/cdrom/boot/kernel /mnt/linux/boot

   Add this line to the /mnt/linux/etc/fstab file.

   /dev/hda2    /    ext3    defaults  1   1

   You need to use Lilo/Grub etc. to boot it.

   From the RIP cd GRUB menu you could do this to boot the Linux
   partition on /dev/hda2.

   Press the `c' key to get a command prompt.

   grub> root (hd0,1)
   grub> kernel /boot/kernel root=/dev/hda2 ro
   grub> boot

NOTE: If you want PCMCIA to start when the system boots, put
      'pcmcia=yes' in /etc/rc.d/rc.conf.

NOTE: You can use the small initrd Linux system on the RIP cd, to
      create the Linux partition etc. and extract rootfs.tgz to it.
      When you boot the RIP cd choose "Boot small initrd Linux system"
      from the menu.

NOTE: It's based on slackware, you can install packages from slackware
      9.0 or later!
      Only use /sbin/installpkg on RIP to install slackware packages!
      # installpkg package_name.tgz
