installing linux from usb cdrom (Adam Ruck)

Subject: installing linux from usb cdrom

I recently bought a Lindows laptop to use as my portable computer.
While I love the hardware very much, I despise Lindows OS.
Lindows OS sucks becuase
-no compiler
-no make command
-crappy interface
-doesn't even a friggin icon for a terminal in the "start menu"
-the click and run software they ship with os is horrible, they
want me to pay 99$ to download binaries of free software(xmms for
instance), but of course this is no compiler so its hard to get around
this little obsticle.
Anyway, I am trying to install a different operating system on my
labtop. Now the trouble I am having is that there is no floppy and no
cdrom drive. All I have is an external cdrom drive.
Bios is very nice and boots the usb cdrom with no trouble at all. But
when I try and go through either redhat or debian installation, the
software they are using to do the installing apperantly does not
recognise usb devices. I get hung up when when the installation
software asks something like, "where do you want to install the
packages from...".
One option which I think would be feasable is that the ethernet can
boot from network. So I would assume there is software available to do
network installs, but I tried to look into it a little bit and found
that the only tools where basically just for clusters, and were very
difficult to operate.
Does anyone know of either a linux distor or fix for a distro that
will allow the installation software to recognize my usb cdrom, or
simple software to allow me to install over my network?
Any information would be great,
Thx.
