This note is a somewhat delayed report from Ashutosh Naik
<a7ash@yahoo.com> in Belgaum... Our ILUG-Goa team of eight just returned
late last night from Belgaum (150 kms away), after a very interesting
visit there. FN

========== Forwarded message ==========

Day 1 of GNUBeLUG was full of action. Remember, It was
the first major event organised by ilug-belgaum.
To begin with, the principal of GIT, Dr. D H Rao
inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp. This
was a really good way of starting the function because
with one light, U can light another.. And that's the
way the spirit of Free Software multiplies.

The trend during the day was the GNu philosophy..
People were shocked to know that propreitory companies
had taken their freedom for granted, And most
definitely agreed that GNU/Linux was altleast worth a
try..The Principles of Free, Open Source and
Propreitory software were argued till length

After the talk on GNU principles by myself, We had a
brief Installation seesion, A talk on GNU/Linux in
daily life by Gurpreet Singh, And finally a talk on
Hacking Kernel Modules by a true hacker, Rahul Iyer.

There were also loads of everyday questions answered
by the panelists which included myself, Rohan, Bhaskar
Ghose, Gurpreet Singh and Sanket Patil. Most of these
questions were on switching to GNU/Linux and the
configuration issues involved

Finally the meet ended with a demo of the Indlinux v
0.37 project and a demo of Knoppix

We do look forward to your company tommorrow.. which
promises to be more action-packed as compared to today

Tomm's Attractions :
- Embedded Linux by Trevor Warren
- Setting Up GNU/Linux as a WebServer - Dr. Bhat
- GNU/Linux on the desktop - Arvind yadav
- GNU/Linux in India - Frederick Noronha
- Panel Discussions
And much more

You surely dont want to miss it !!

Subject: ANN: Infrared-HOWTO 3.5

Hi,

there is a new issue of the InfraRed-HOWTO available in different
formats:

HTML http://tuxmobil.org/howtos.html
SGML http://tuxmobil.org/howtos.html
IPK feed for PDAs http://tuxmobil.org/feed.html

Please note these URLs have moved from mobilix.org to tuxmobil.org because
of severe trademark trouble with Asterix and Obelix. A documentation of the
trademark case is at
http://tuxmobil.org/mobilix_asterix.html

The Infrared-HOWTO provides an introduction to Linux and infrared
devices and how to use the software provided by the Linux/IrDA
project. This package uses IrDA(TM) compliant standards. IrDA(TM) is
an industrial standard for infrared wireless communication, and most
laptops made after January 1996 are equipped with an IrDA(TM)
compliant infrared transceiver. Infrared ports let you communicate
with printers, modems, fax machines, LANs, and other laptops.

Remote Control (RC) via infrared is the aim of the Linux Infrared Remote
Control - LIRC project, and also described in this HOWTO.

A note to Jean: I have not finished the re-ordering of the HOWTO according
to your recommendation yet. But I'm on the way. Also I have asked to get the
document into CVS at the Linux Documentation Project. But I haven't got an
answer yet.

Werner

Hey,

Theres a great interview with Eric Raymond, publisher of the
"Halloween Documents" and author of The Cathedral and the Bazaar, up
on Availinux.com! In the interview he says "the open source revolution
is basically on course, the enterprise has embraced Linux, and these
days very few people now need to be convinced that the open source
methodology can create best-of-breed software".

Check it out here >>

Good reading,

From: Steven Knight <knight@baldmt.com>
Subject: ANNOUNCE: SCons 0.13 (build tool in Python) is now available
Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2003 07:37:12 CST

SCons is a software construction tool (build tool, or make tool) written
in Python. It is based on the design which won the Software Carpentry
build tool competition in August 2000.

Version 0.13 of SCons has been released and is available for download
from the SCons web site:

        http://www.scons.org/

Or through the download link at the SCons project page at SourceForge:

        http://sourceforge.net/projects/scons/

RPM and Debian packages and a Win32 installer are all available, in
addition to the traditional .tar.gz and .zip files.

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE?

Release 0.13 contains an important fix for a critical bug found shortly
after SCons version 0.12 was released.

SCons version 0.12 has a bug that occurs when a build directory
is used without duplicating source files in the build tree
("BuildDir(duplicate=0)") and any subsidiary SConscript file includes
another SConscript file.

This bug has been fixed in version 0.13, and a test has been added to
the regression test base to catch this situation in the future.

Release 0.13 also contains an unrelated fix to support fetching files
using earlier versions of Perforce that don't use the Windows registry.

ABOUT SCONS

Distinctive features of SCons include:

  - a global view of all dependencies; no multiple passes to get
    everything built properly
  - configuration files are Python scripts, allowing the full use of a
real scripting language to solve difficult build problems
  - a modular architecture allows the SCons Build Engine to be
    embedded in other Python software
  - the ability to scan files for implicit dependencies (#include files);
  - improved parallel build (-j) support that provides consistent
build speedup regardless of source tree layout
  - use of MD5 signatures to decide if a file has really changed; no
need to "touch" files to fool make that something is up-to-date
  - easily extensible through user-defined Builder and Scanner objects
  - build actions can be Python code, as well as external commands

An scons-users mailing list is available for those interested in getting
started using SCons. You can subscribe at:

        http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scons-users

Alternatively, we invite you to subscribe to the low-volume
scons-announce mailing list to receive notification when new versions of
SCons become available:

        http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scons-announce

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Special thanks to Charles Crain for making this release possible by
finding and fixing the critical bug fixed in this release.

On behalf of the SCons team,
