Linux: 34% Lower TCO than Windows.

                                        ANNOUNCEMENT
                                        2002-05-01 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

                                        CONTACT: Con Zymaris
                                        conz@cyber.com.au

April 2002, Melbourne: A follow-on study as to the overall Total Cost of
Ownership differences between Linux and Open Source platforms on the one
hand, and Windows and Microsoft platforms on the other, has shown a cost
saving with Linux of between 34% and 25%, depending on hardware factors.

The study, available here:
 http://www.cyber.com.au/cyber/about/linux_vs_windows_tco_comparison.pdf
was undertaken on the average computer-sage requirements for an
organisation with 250 users, over a 3 year period. The costing models
included expenses such as workstations, servers, networking, staff,
consultancy fees, Internet Service charges, file, mail and print
servers, e-commerce servers, SQL and network infrastructure servers,
Internet and Intranet servers, line-of-business software, desktop
productivity applications as well as miscellaneous systems costs.

The prices used for the study, along with research methodology, vendor
specifications, cost calculator tabulations and final results are all
included, so that these results can be verified by others.

Cybersource CEO, Con Zymaris commented: "As a professional services
business with over 10 years serving customers with both Linux and
Microsoft platforms solutions, we were interested in these results for
our own purposes. However, in light of recent projected alterations to
Microsoft's licencing regime, our customers have been vocal in their
request for such a cost-comparison."

Added Zymaris: "With a realisation from many business and organisations
worldwide that Linux has drawn parity with closed source proprietary
technologies for server, network infrastructure and desktop business
requirements, factors such as total cost of ownership and return on IT
investment are of particular importance in the present economic climate.
We hope that the results of our research will reach those best-placed to
realise the possible benefits indicated and assist businesses in making
a decision which best suits their goals."

From: Pavel Zaboj <zaboj@kapuca.net>
Subject: K3Studio 0.98 released
Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 21:48:40 CST

About K3Studio
==============
The main focus of K3Studio is on 3d visualization of combinatorial graphs,
i.e. a set of nodes connected with edges. However, it goes much further:

- The objects (i.e. nodes and edges) can have an arbitrary shape, enabling
K3Studio to be used for 2d/3d vector and diagram drawing.

- K3Studio provides 3d object selection (with the help of off-screen rendering
 with fake colors) and all objects can receive user events, e.g. mouse enter,
key pressed, etc. This enables K3Studio to be used as a 3d GUI.

- Since the nodes can have their own functionality (::main() method) and the
edges can be viewed as connectors carrying messages between the nodes K3Studio
can, in fact, be used as a simulation workbench for automata networks.

- All the functionality, appearance and event handling is easily programmable
and extendable with plugins. There are more than 15 plugins that come with the
application, some of which are quite usable, some are more for demonstration
purpose.

Other highlights include:

- The K3Studio user interface is very flexible and provides mechanisms
for "every" user need: from drag & drop and GUI, a command line with built
in Python, to C++ plugins.

- Multiple views/cameras support, each with separate opengl and lighting models.
K3Studio is not, and does not want to be a clone of any commercial or free
product. It does not try to be yet another 3DStudio, Visio or another
"workalike".

Homepage
========
K3Studio homepage is www.k3studio.org.

Technology
==========
>From the technology point of view K3Studio has the following features:
- it is a KDE3/KOffice application;
- uses OpenGL;
- is written in C++;
- uses Python as an embeded language;
- uses SWIG for Python interface generation.

Current release
===============
Version 0.98 comes after longer period of silence. However, it has been
actively developed, just not published. There are many changes, improvements
and bugfixes compared to previous release. Notably it might be portation
to KDE3 or usage of pbuffers for selection in case of NVidia cards.

Plugins
=======
All the functionality, appearance and event handling is easily programmable
and extendable with plugins. There are more than 15 plugins that come with the
application, some of which are quite usable, some are more for demonstration
purpose.

To help users to write their own plugins the application comes with
plugin skeleton, which provides quick and easy way to exteded K3Studio
with desired functionality. Look at/for k3studio-plugin-skel-$version.tar.gz.

Version 0.98 includes following plugins:
- 3DS for 3d studio .3ds models

IBM Demonstrates Breakthrough Self-Managing Offerings Across Product Line

        Customers Estimate Potential IT Savings of Up to 20 Percent

      ARMONK, NY ? May 2, 2002 ? One year after announcing its Project
eLiza (tm) initiative to develop self-managing or "autonomic" systems, IBM
is demonstrating new technology that customers familiar with them estimate
may save them as much as 20 percent on their information technology
budgets. The more complex the infrastructure, the more savings customers
estimate.

      The new technology moves beyond the goal of self management that IBM
announced a year ago to technology that takes the next step, allowing
systems to learn as they work. Based on sophisticated software algorithms,
the new workload management technology is designed to continually improve
performance across a group of servers as it learns, for example, Internet
traffic and applications usage patterns. The technology is unique because
it can then improve performance in real time across up to thousands of IBM
eServer (tm) systems and non-IBM computers as though they were a single
system. IBM plans to deliver the technology to select customers and
developers in late 2002.

      Through Enterprise Workload Manager and other end-to-end
self-management technologies, IBM customers can begin to tackle the more
complex issues that drive higher costs and exacerbate skill shortages. As
a result, customers including Lufthansa Systems Group and Panasonic are
looking to IBM as a leader in the area of autonomic computing.

      "With these offerings, customers for the first time can begin to cope
with the onslaught of technology and shortage of skills by bringing to bear
networked computing resources that autonomically protect the infrastructure
and balance workload across multiple server, storage and client devices,"
said Alan Ganek, vice president of Autonomic Computing.

In addition to Enterprise Workload Manager, additional Project eLiza
technologies announced today include:

ITS Electronic Service Agent ? Enhancing the powerful self-healing
capabilities defined by Project eLiza, IBM Global Services is now
delivering a first-of-a-kind software solution that will remotely detect
and repair problems with any eServer, in many cases without human
intervention. Electronic Service Agent is available immediately and at no
additional cost throughout IBM's eServer family.

Electronic Service Update provides proactive service monitoring and key
information about the customer's operational environment. When a problem
is detected, the software collects data and transmits it back to IBM, where
machine-to-machine the problem can be analyzed and fixed. If the problem
cannot be repaired machine-to-machine, IBM will notify the customer and
initiate remedies, often before any system performance degradation occurs.

Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM) -- A first-of-its-kind enabling
technology that will allow end-to-end secure transactions. EIM associates
and tracks a user's multiple security identities across a network, enabling
programmers to write simpler and more secure applications without forcing
users to sign on and authenticate to each server in a network. Ultimately,
this will allow a company's network to decide what level of access to grant
a user depending on where they enter the network. For example, a user
entering through a VPN could be granted higher levels of access than a user
entering through a wireless connection, which is less secure. This
technology is planned to be available on eServer iSeries (tm) later this
summer and on other eServer systems later this year.

"Raquarium" ? Technology being introduced into IBM Director that will help
customers deploy, reprovision, update and troubleshoot hundreds of blade
servers easily and remotely from a graphical console and also allows
customers to manage the hardware through graphical visualizations and auto
recognition on a single server console monitoring the system.

These autonomic technologies complement recently announced storage and
Tivoli (r) systems management software, as well as new self-healing
software embedded in PCs that allows the user to automatically restore an
image in the event a PC crashes.

Details about these technologies will be available in a technology fact
sheet. Fact sheets with more information on customers and Project eLiza
Partners are also available.

About Autonomic Computing and Project eLiza
Autonomic Computing reflects a vision to develop and deploy intelligent
systems that self manage and regulate themselves, much the way the human
autonomic nervous system manages the human body. This vision is motivated
by the tremendous complexity in today's computing environments and the
resultant difficulties and expense of managing them. The biological
metaphor suggest a systemic approach, coordinating activity across the many
components of computing systems, achieving a much higher level of
automation. For a complete discussion of the autonomic computing direction
see the Autonomic Computing Manifesto (
http://www.research.ibm.com/autonomic/manifesto/).

About IBM
IBM is the world's largest information technology company, with 80 years of
leadership in helping businesses innovate. Drawing on resources from across

Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 21:49:24 CST

The SELinux web site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/> including the mail
list archive has been updated. Two new technical reports are available
in the documentation: a document describing the policy language and a
document describing the current LSM implementation of SELinux. The
site also includes a new release of the LSM-based SELinux prototype.
The stable (2.4) LSM-based SELinux prototype remains at kernel 2.4.18.
The development (2.5) LSM-based SELinux prototype was updated to kernel
2.5.10. A number of policy improvements, minor feature enhancements
and bug fixes have also been made.

Security-enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible mandatory
access control architecture into the major subsystems of the Linux
kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of
information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This
allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security
mechanisms to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that
can be caused by malicious or flawed applications. The SELinux web
site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/> contains background information,
documentation, source code, and archives for the selinux mailing-list.
