Subject: News:Trademark Action Against MobiliX: Arguments of Obelix Rejected
Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 21:46:44 CST
Reply-To: Werner Heuser <wehe@mobilix.org>
During their trademark action against MobiliX
"Lés Editions Albert René" has accused MobiliX of
"a new form of electronical terror". MobiliX has documented the case on
its internet pages in an objective and polite manner.
Therefore the lawyers Jaschinski Biere Brexl (JBB)
have rejected the accusation as untrue and polemical.
Also the trademark related argumentation is rejected in every case.
The lawyers of "Lés Editions Albert René"
have especially tried to establish Obelix as a famous trademark,
which would get a special trademark protection. But this isn't true:
the protection by a famous trademark needs a name, which is
famous as a product. But the public doesn't consider the trademark
Obelix as a product , it thinks of a character from a comic.
The complete response (PDF, 9 pages, German)
is available online (http://mobilix.org/mobilix_asterix.html).
MobiliX is a very wellknown site dedicated to free software and
documentation for Linux and BSD on mobile devices (like laptops, PDAs,
cell phones and more). In November 2001 Werner Heuser, owner of
the Open Source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers
(http://mobilix.org) was charged by "Lés Editions Albert René",
which is owner of the trademark "Obelix".
In their opinion the names Obelix and MobiliX are
very similar. The charge aimes on a deletion of the
trademark "MobiliX" and a compensation fee.
The court Landgericht Muenchen I , Lenbachplatz 7,
(http://www.justiz.bayern.de/lgmuenchen1)
in Munich (Germany) has set the date for the first hearing
to June 12th 2002, 10:15. The hearing is open to the public.

Subject: mod_roaming 2.0b1 - a Netscape Roaming Access module for Apache
Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 21:46:52 CST
With mod_roaming you can use your Apache webserver as a Netscape
Roaming Access server. This allows you to store your Netscape
Communicator 4.5 preferences, bookmarks, address books, cookies etc.
on the server so that you can use (and update) the same settings from
any Netscape Communicator 4.5 that can access the server.
This version is the first to work with Apache 2.0, and as such it is
a beta. If you notice any problems, please let me know. Also, I would
be grateful if someone tested whether this version works properly on
Windows and OS/2.
If you want to use mod_roaming with an older version of Apache, use
mod_roaming 1.0.2.

IBM Debuts New Volume Management Technology on Linux
World-Class Technology Targets Enterprise Computing
ARMONK, NY, May 1, 2002 - IBM today announced world-class volume
management technology for Linux[r] that is designed to streamline and
enhance storage management capabilities for the enterprise. The new
technology is the result of extensive collaboration among developers in the
Linux open community and the IBM Linux Technology Center (LTC)
http://ibm.com/linux/ltc.
Operating systems manage storage and file volumes on servers by compressing
them, controlling and balancing access. The new volume management system
for Linux will help make Linux capable of managing more content, files and
users, larger servers and at the same time making it easier to use. With
the new volume management technology, Linux is more capable of supporting
the enterprise level business applications customers need.
The Enterprise Volume Management System (EVMS) version 1.0.0 is a
state-of-the-art, easy to use volume manager of unparalleled flexibility
and expandability. EVMS integrates all aspects of disk, partition, and
volume management into a single, enterprise level design and
implementation, bringing industrial strength features found in proprietary
volume managers to Linux. As a result of the highly modular, plug-in
nature of EVMS, customers will be able to use this technology as their
companies' needs grow and change and as new technologies become available.
EVMS is 100% open source, available for all community members to use, and
is licensed under the GPL.
EVMS technology significantly expands the Volume Management capabilities
found in Linux today by allowing users to access data and manage volumes
from virtually any operating system. In addition, when used to emulate
Volume Managers found in other non-Linux operating systems, EVMS can help
significantly reduce the expense and technical barriers associated with
migrating to a Linux platform.
"EVMS technology is a quantum leap forward in readying Linux for the
enterprise," said Daniel Frye, Director, Linux Technology Center, IBM.
"When adopted in the base, EVMS will make Linux volume management
world-class."
The EVMS project has its home on SourceForge (
http://www.sf.net/projects/evms) and has hundreds of downloads with every
release, totaling tens of thousands of downloads received in less than one
year. The community is very active and has been involved with EVMS since
its inception in January of 2001. Several Linux distributors are currently
evaluating EVMS for inclusion in upcoming releases.
"EVMS technology is an impressive technological step in Linux storage
management, and SuSE welcomes the additional availability and migration
features," said Boris Nalbach, CTO of SuSE Linux AG. "Such technology will
enable all enterprises to take even more advantage of using Linux for
mission critical applications."
"The key to flexible processing power is making it easy to run Linux in any
enterprise environment. And that means making it easier for enterprises to
run their data centers," said Ly-Huong Pham, CEO of Turbolinux. "Like
IBM, Turbolinux has a commitment to accelerate the penetration of Linux in
the enterprise by implementing features like EVMS in upcoming releases of
our Linux operating environments for enterprise servers and developers.
EVMS shows the industry that Linux provides unprecedented degrees of
interoperability and power at a very low cost."
This inclusive, extensible volume manager utilizes a plug-in system that
supports all volume management capabilities found in Linux today and is
flexible enough to allow for the emulation of volume managers found in
other operating systems and other proprietary technologies. EVMS version
1.0.0 provides support for multiple disk partitioning schemes, mirroring
(RAID 1), striping with and without parity (RAID 0, 4, 5), drive linking,
bad block relocation, and volume groups.
A Volume Manager provides a virtual view of local and remote storage. This
virtual view can be used to combine or divide physical storage in a variety
of ways such as combining several physical disks to appear as one large
disk. Additionally, Volume Managers can support various capabilities such
as RAID support, Volume groups, encryption, compression and much more.
IBM Open Source Projects
EVMS is the latest of among over 70 projects that the LTC is currently
engaged in with the Open Source community. A full listing, with links to
project pages, can be found at http://www.ibm.com/linux/ltc. The LTC is
committed to working with the Open Source development community to add
Enterprise and Carrier Grade capabilities to Linux. This includes work to
advance: scalability, serviceability, serviceability tooling, performance,
directory services, Samba, printer support, security, networking, network
security, Linux Standards Base and LI18NUX standards initiatives, test
harnesses and test cases, storage/IO, file systems, volume managment,
device drivers, reliability, documentation, embedded Linux, availability,
and many other areas. The LTC also works with and supports a range of
communities including the Open Source Development Laboratory, Open Source
Initiative, KDE League, GNOME Foundation, Free Software Foundation, Free
Standards Group, and USENIX. The LTC mission is simply to "Help make
Linux better".

Goa is India's smallest state on the west coast of the country. The LUG

Some notes from our April-end meeting
================================================================
* Laxman Saval, our Bahrain-based ILUG member, took the trouble to
specially attend this meet which saw a far smaller-than-usual turnout.
* Bijon Shaha, who visited the Farmaguddi exhbition, informally
shared some of his impressions. (Tip: can future exhibitions take
care of the outdoor summer heat somehow?)
* Short discussion on Red Hat courses, now being offered at Verna.
Some felt the price structure of some certifications offered
by brandname companies was tough on the pocket.
* Some banter about the IBM GNULinux CD set giveaway offer.
(IBM posts across free CD sets for Linux developers. You have to
visit the website, fillup a form and wait 4-6 weeks.)

http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/offers/spc/spc_lappws.html?t=gr,l37=Linuxorkshop
* ArvindY said IBM offers free webspace for 3 months or so for
developers to test their work on various OSs.He promised to give
the link.
* Plan to set up new TECHNICAL mailing list for Linux in Goa.
* Plans to set up two more mailing-lists: linux-goa-announce (only
for important announcements) and linux-goa-moderators (for
the core team to discuss issues and policies).
* Discussion about the GNULinux mailing-list manager Mailman.
Animesh said there seemed to be no way to block attachements
on Mailman. FN agreed (but later checked up and found that there
indeed is a way out!) To see Mailman in operation, pls visit
http://www.indialists.org ...
* Since Mini Jerome of GoaTelecom was around, the subject came up
of blocking(?) virii on GoaTelecom server. ArvindY suggested a
GNULinux solution to allow 'auto-mailforwarding' on GoaTelecom.
He also mentioned the recent visit of Ashish Kotamkar <ashish@
mithi.com> of Mithi in Pune, and the possibility of Indian-
language solutions.
* Animesh raised a query about Devanagiri (Hindi) font set.
* GoaTelecom had some queries about copying users from old to
new servers (needing: password, group, gshadow and shadow).
* FN said a conference on Indian language computing solutions
was being planned later this year, possibly with participation
from Media Lab Asia. He also mentioned the availability of
a number of GNULinux s/w products through the freshmeat.net
site (available also through its mailing-list, via email).
But felt this needed someone to categorise them and package
them to suitable users.
* Long discussion on Open Office, and how it compares with
Star Office. "RAM requirement appears to be rather low."
"As of now, it can even open Office XP files and save as that."
* Ms Jerome asked about educational software for children.
Some suggestions (unchecked): k12 and seul (or seol?) She
sought suggestions on getting her seventh-standard
son into using GNULinux.
* It was suggested that GoaTelecom.net could upload how-tos
on installing KPPP, KMail and maybe even Eudora (Windows).
Any volunteers willing to write these would be appreciated.
* That's it. See you on May 25. It's Id, so anyone wanting
to celebrate is specially welcome. We meet @ CSI, 4 pm,
rain or sun, heat or cold, powerfailure or not.
