Subject: DAR - a Full Featured Backup Software for Linux
Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 21:44:13 CST

Hello all,

I am happy to present DAR version 1.0.0

Dar stands for "Disk ARchive"
it is released under GNU General Public License

http://dar.linux.free.fr/

PRESENTATION
================

dar is a shell command, that makes backup of a directory tree and files.
Actually it has been tested only under Linux, but future issue is planed
for windows. A GUI for Linux will also follow, for version 2.0.0

FEATURES
================

FILTERS :
dar is able to backup from total file system to a single file.
Additionally a mechanism of filters permits, based on the filename, to
exclude or include some files while backing up or restoring a directory
tree. In the other side, a secondary filter mechanism permits to exclude
some branches of a
directory tree, or to only include some branches.

DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP :
When making a backup with dar, you have the possibility to make a full
backup or a differential backup. A full backup, as expected makes backup
of all files as specified on the command line (with or without filters).
Instead, a differential backup, (over filter mechanism), saves only
files that have
changed since a given reference backup. Additionally, files that existed
in the reference backup and which do no more exist at the time of the
differential backup are recorded in the backup. At recovery time,
(unless you deactivate it), restoring a differential backup will update
changed files
and new files, but also remove files that have been recorded as deleted.
Note that the reference backup can be a full backup or another
differential backup. This way you can make a first full backup, then
many differential backup, each taking as reference the last backup made.

SLICES :
Dar stands for Disk ARchive. From the beginning it was designed to be
able to split an archive over several removable media whatever their
number is and whatever their size is. Thus dar is able to save over old
floppy disk, CD-R, DVD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, Zip, Jazz, etc... Dar is not
concerned by
un/mounting a removable medium, instead it is independent of hardware.
Given the size, it will split the archive in several files (called
SLICES), eventually pausing before creating the next one, allowing this
way, the user to un/mount a medium, burn the file on CD-R, send it by
email (if your mail
system does not allow huge file in emails, dar can help you here also).
By default, (no size specified), dar will make one slice whatever its
size is. Additionally, the size of the first slice can be specified
separately, if for example you want first to fulfil an partially filled
disk before starting using empty ones. Last, at restoration time, dar
will just pause and prompt
the user asking a slice only if it is missing.

COMPRESSION :
last, dar can use compression. By default no compression is used.
Actually only gzip algorithm is implemented, but some room has been done
for bzip2 and any other compression algorithm. Note that, compression is
made before slices, which means that using compression with slices, will
not make slices smaller, but will probably make less slices in the
backup.

DIRECT ACCESS :
even using compression dar has not to read the whole backup to extract
one file. This way if you just want to restore one file from a huge
backup, the process will be much faster than using tar. Dar first reads
the catalogue (i.e. the contents of the backup), then it goes directly
to the location of
the saved file(s) you want to restore and proceed to restoration. In
particular using slices dar will ask only for the slice(s) containing
the file(s) to restore.

Subject: ANN: tk500, new utility software for the Yaesu VR-500 receiver
Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 21:44:21 CST

The Yaesu VR-500 is a portable 0.1 - 1300 MHz receiver.

tk500 is a new, open source program for
Linux, Windows, and (perhaps) MacOS X which lets you:

(1) Read a memory image from the VR-500 receiver.

(2) Read an RT Systems .RDF file and extract the memory image.
(Thanks to Dan Wanchic, WA8VZQ for posting detailed
information about the RDF file layout.)

(3) Display data from a memory image using a graphical user
        interface.

(4) Save a memory image in a template file.

(5) Extract memory channel information from a memory image
and export it to a .csv (comma-separated values) file.

This is an early, experimental version of tk500.
It will read data from the radio and let you edit it via
a graphical user interface. Currently, tk500 cannot write the
changes back out the radio.

From: Kaz Kylheku <kaz@ashi.footprints.net>
Subject: Meta-CVS 0.10
Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 21:45:58 CST

Meta-CVS is a layer of software intended to create a more intelligent
version control system on top of CVS. The features are:

- interactive handling of file types when adding or importing;
- easy branching and merging that automatically keeps track
  of what has been merged where (new in 0.10);
- no CVS glitches when adding, removing or resurrecting dead files.
- directory structure treated as concurrently versioned element,
allowing moves and renames that preserve file history perfectly.

With Meta-CVS, developers can restructure a project's file hierarchy
in different ways in parallel, and then merge the structure. Moreover,
the structure is tagged as part of a software release. Retrieving
an old release gets the old structure. Updates from the repository
automatically rearrange the sandbox to match the new structure.

Meta-CVS currently has these dependencies: GNU/Linux, /dev/urandom,
glibc2, CLISP.

SHAREWARE: jpg2pdf 2.4

What is jpg2pdf?

jpg2pdf is a very flexible and powerful PERL5 program. It can convert
a collection of jpeg images into a PDF album.
You can use jpg2pdf like a module inside your applications (cgis,
...).

Why do you need jpg2pdf?

jpg2pdf is a PERL5 tool, so you can use it in every OS supported by
PERL5.
We distribute also these executable versions: Windows, Solaris, HP-UX,
Linux, AIX, Mac OS X.
Please note that the Windows version comes with an extra tool known as
Visual jpgt2pdf.
jpg2pdf is a native converter, you don't need to pass through
PostScript format
jpg2pdf is specific to put your jpeg images inside a PDF, so
you can create (batch) a unique PDF file from your JPEG archive (using
* and ? metachars: e.g. a*.jpg or recursively)
you can add to your PDF collection of jpeg images transition effects
you can set PDF full-screen mode e.g. to show to your friend your
digital photos made by your digital camera
you can create your personalize background and foreground layer

What's new:
Mac OS X executable distribution
Visual jpg2pdf version 2.0
New linear option or inside your configuration file: list. With this
new option you can specify a list file with inside a list of your
input textual files (one entry every line).

Test jpg2pdf 2.4!
You can find it at http://www.sanface.com/jpg2pdf.html

From: j.anders@informatik.tu-chemnitz.de (Joerg Anders)
Subject: Linux:noteedit:graces,alsa-0.9,aRts
Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 21:46:50 CST

noteedit-1.18.0 is available:

  http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features:
=============
The first 2 features actually don't concern NoteEdit but Pete Goodliffe's
<pete.goodliffe@pace.co.uk> TSE3 library. Version 0.1.3 of TSE3 is
alsa-0.5/0.9 and aRts compatible.

As a side effect NoteEdit is:
  - alsa-0.5/0.9
  - aRts compatible (start: noteedit -arts)

Furthermore:
  - grace notes (see/hear example11.not)
  - Italien version (Tanks to merigo Carugno <amcarug@tin.it>)
  - a glue button to (un)lock some buttons
  - wheel mouse causes horizontal(!) scroll (if correctly configured in X11)
  - mezzo piano (mp)
  - bugs, bugs, bugs, ... (mainly concerning problems with slurred notes)

Some aspects of grace notes
===========================

Please note! Grace notes are conflicting things: They do not
contribute to measure length. On the other hand a certain amount
of time is needed to play them. This time must be taken from other
notes. Thus, if you insert - say - 20 grace notes between two 8th
you cannot expect the playback really works! Problems also occur
if you place some graces without a main note.

Problems exporting graces notes
==============================

MusiXTeX
accepts the graces so as written on score: with/without beam,
with/without slur, even beamed stroken graces.

LilyPond
changes the beam status reasonably. Version 1.4.x cannot deal
with slurs in grace notes. NoteEdit will warn you.

PMX
does not offer 16th graces. NoteEdit will warn you.

MUP
hates beam statements in grace notes. It sets the beams reasonably.
So, if you are a MUP user never produce grace notes with beams!
Furthermore, MUP cannot deal with graces after. NoteEdit will warn you.
