=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Carillon Information Security Inc. would like to announce the release of
KDirAdm version 0.1

K DIRectory ADMinistrator is a tool for use by Directory Administrators to
manage their LDAP based directory. Using the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and
OpenLDAP toolsets, this application currently has all of the basic
functionality required to browse, add, and delete directory entries. As this
is an initial BETA release, the capability to modify existing entries, as
well as the ability to handle binary directory objects is currently missing.
This is planned for the next release, along with improved password entry
handling and possibly LDAP over SSL support.

KDirAdm is open source software released under the GNU Public License. As
such we encourage anyone to help us in the development of this software.
Specific jobs that need doing at the moment are improving the documentation,
the artwork, and of course, any LDAP wizards that want to help out will be
greatly appreciated.

The homepage for KDirAdm is at:

http://www.carillonis.com/kdiradm

where both source and Debian packages may be obtained.

Comments, suggestions, wishlist items and patches may be sent to
ppatterson@carillonis.com

Cheers.

From: Charles Kerr <charles@rebelbase.com>
Subject: ANN: Pan 0.11.1.90 "Rommelspargel" Released
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 15:50:42 CST

Pan 0.11.1.90, "Rommelspargel", has been released.
It can be found at http://pan.rebelbase.com/.

What is Pan?

Pan is a newsreader, loosely based on Agent and Gravity, which
attempts to be pleasant to use for new and advanced users alike.
It has all the typical features found in newsreaders and also
supports offline newsreading, article filtering, multiple connections,
and a number of extra features for power users and alt.binaries fans.

It's also the only Unix newsreader to get a perfect score on the
Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval evaluations. See
http://pan.rebelbase.com/features.html for the rest of the
        sales pitch.

About 0.11.1.90

This version adds easier visual cues for new/unread/old articles,
support for Microsoft "SPA" authentication, some speed tweaks,
dialogs that are friendly to 800x600 screens, a fix for a very
big memory leak, and a handful of other important bug fixes.

A revision number of >= 90 is used to flag this release as a beta
without confusing RPM's feeble brain with a name like "0.11.2-pre1".

What's New in 0.11.1.90

        NEW FEATURES

        * The thread pane now looks like many GUI mail clients in that it
boldfaces articles with new replies and greys out read articles
to show which articles are new, unread, and old. Also, when a
thread is collapsed, the subject column will tell how many new
replies are in the collapsed thread. Thanks to Jed Baer,
Douglas Bollinger, and Andreas Ollinger for working these ideas
through to consensus on the pan-users mailing list.

        * Added support for Microsoft Secure Password Authentication ("SPA")
so that Pan will work with Microsoft NNTP servers. Thanks to the
Samba team for writing the SPA authentication code and to
Marc Prud'hommeaux for plugging it into Pan!

        * Pan now has a Greek translation!
Thanks to Simos Xenitellis for contributing this.

        * Added the ability to specify, on a per-Profile basis, the
domain name to be used in the Message-Id header in new posts.
This can be used to point to your proper domain or just
          for privacy's sake.

        * Added new regression tests to the testing module.

        UPDATES

        * The Preferences Dialog now fits on an 800x600 screen
          and has other UI improvements.

        * Better error reporting on disk I/O errors
          (full disk, permissions errors, etc.)

        * About two dozen small speed tweaks.

        * We now support POSIX extended regular expression syntax,
giving us support for operators like '?'. Thanks to
          Chris Petersen for suggesting this.

        BUG FIXES

        * Fixed huge 0.11.1 memory leak.

        * Fixed bug that caused some attachments to be decoded incorrectly.
Thanks to Dave at dalrun for reporting this bug.

        * Fixed crash that seemed to happen for no reason when reading new
          articles.

        * Fixed thread safety bug in the article cache.

        * Fixed thread safety bug in the Task Manager backend. Thanks
very much to Christian Suder for reporting this bug.

        * Fixed crash that could sometimes occur when cancelling tasks or
going offline from the Task Manager.

        * Fixed crash when overriding the system defaults for article
foreground and background colors. This crash seems to be related
to specific GTK themes. Thanks to T'Az and Krishna Naik for reporting
          this problem.

        * Fixed crash that occurred when incomplete identities were entered
in the Profile Editor. Incomplete profiles can no longer be entered.
Thanks to nhodge1 for reporting this bug. (67311)

        * Fixed bug that caused Pan to crash when an invalid rules xml file
was read. Thanks to Roger Gregory for reporting this bug. (67657)

        * Double-clicking a URL would open up to three browsers if the
browser wasn't already running. Note: URLs only need a single click.
Thanks to Mart van de Wege for reporting this. (68009)

        * Fixed bug that accidentally downloaded a couple of old articles
in the "Get New Headers" command.

        * If Followup-To is set to 'poster', only send the article as an
email. Thanks to Christian Lohmaier for reporting this bug.

        * Fixed mistake in 0.11.1 that used "supercede" instead of "supersede"
          when superseding articles.

        * Fixed bug in importing grouplists from Pan version 0.9.6 and older.
Thanks to Brandon McCombs for reporting this bug.

Subject: Dump/restore 0.4b26 released
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 15:50:35 CST
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <stelian.pop@fr.alcove.com>

A new version of dump/restore, the Linux ext2/ext3 filesystem
backup utilities, has been released today.

This release fixes several bugs, see the entire Changelog below.

You can download the new release at:
        http://dump.sourceforge.net

Stelian.

Changes between versions 0.4b25 and 0.4b26 (released January 7, 2002)
=====================================================================

1. Added a set of backup scripts from Eugenio Diaz
<getnito@yahoo.com> in the examples section. It features
automatic (cron based) full and incremental dumping of
several filesystems on a separate filesystem.

2. Fixed a off-by-one miscalculation which disabled dumping
a one letter subdirectory. Thanks to Chris Siebenmann
        <cks@utcc.utoronto.ca> for reporting the bug.

3. Fixed several restore bugs occuring when trying to
restore some missing files on the tape. Thanks to Chris
Siebenmann <cks@utcc.utoronto.ca> for reporting the bug.

4. Fixed --with-ldopts configure argument passing, installing from
a separate object directory, makefile cleanups contributed
        by <splite@purdue.edu>.

5. Fix a bug which could caused, in some conditions, the highest
number inode of a filesystem, to not be dumped. Many thanks
to Chris Siebenmann <cks@utcc.utoronto.ca> for helping me
        chase this bug.

On Wednesday January 9, room B-316.1, 19h00, at Ecole Polytechnique
de Montreal, Charles Levert of Ericsson Research Canada will present the
architecture of Security Enhanced (SE) Linux, which was developed by the
National Security Agency (NSA). The presentation will be in French.

Le mercredi 9 janvier à 19h00, à la salle B-316.1 de l'Ecole
Polytechnique de Montréal, Charles Levert, du Laboratoire de
Recherches Ericsson, décrira le projet de noyau Linux sécurisé du
National Security Agency (NSA), SE-Linux.

From: "M. Leo Cooper" <thegrendel@theriver.com>
Subject: Advanced Bash Scripting Guide, version 1.1 update
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 15:51:01 CST

Announcing the release of version 1.1 of the "Advanced Bash Scripting Guide".
This tutorial and reference on shell scripting is the equivalent of a 428-page
printed book, with over 210 profusely commented examples and a number of
tables.

New to this update are an extended discussion of using floating point math in
scripts, and, of course, more bugfixes and additional material and example
scripts.

The 36 chapters begin with a gentle introduction to scripting, progress
through basic topics, such as variables, looping, and testing, then go on to
advanced subjects, such as I/O redirection and command substitution. The
coverage of scripting knowledge is virtually complete.

"This tutorial assumes no previous knowledge of scripting
or programming, but progresses rapidly toward an
intermediate/advanced level of instruction (...all the
while sneaking in little snippets of UNIX wisdom and
lore). It serves as a textbook, a manual for self-study,
and a reference and source of knowledge on shell scripting
techniques. The exercises and heavily-commented examples
invite active reader participation, under the premise that
the only way to really learn scripting is to write scripts."

--- From the introduction to the book

This book is released under the LDP license
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/manifesto.html), which essentially means that it is
free and freely distributable.

I would again like to thank all the people in the Linux community who
contributed suggestions, advice, bugfixes, and time and effort to this
project. The book could not have gotten to this stage if it were not
for all the help I've received.

Subject: KSnuffle-0.6 released
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 15:51:32 CST

Thanks!
==========[snip]========

NOTE: Versions up to 0.3 inclusive had a great big security hole. Anyone
       using these should upgrade!

NEW : Version 0.7 is primarily a fix to build on Mandrake 7.0 with
gcc 2.95. Otherwise there is one fix to the packet details
display (source/destination address mixup), and a picture of me
in the about box (OK, this is a pure ego trip, but the KDE site
       has a developers' gallery).

THANX: To everyone who helped sort the gcc 2.95 problem, and generally
supplied bug reports and feedback. You might want to grab the
latest upload for the above bug fix.

MANDRAKE:
       Should be OK now!

=====[The Actual Announcement]========================================

KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:

        * Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
        * Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
        * Multiple concurrent monitors
        * Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
        * Textual display of network traffic overview
        * Full(er) details of protocol and application data available
        * Display of data in TCP/IP streams
        * Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
        * Parallel display of multiple load histograms
        * Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
        * Support for use by selected non-root users
        * Plugin support - 0.7 contains dns, summary and end-to-end plugins

In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP and ICMP. Packet decoding does not go down into the
application level except for DNS packets.

Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.

The plugin interface as changed a tiny bit, specifically the structure
returned by "getPlugin" has changed. If (in the unlikely event) anyone
has written a plugin, see the PLUGINS file for details.

KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-0.7/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.

FS: BLOWOUT:Only 1 case left arley Hahn's "Open Computing Unix
Unbound" - $3+ shipping.

Published by Osborne
ISBN 0-07-882050-2

I have a short supply.
These books originally sold for $27.95 and are considered by many to
be one of the best books ever written as an introduction/reference to
the Unix Operating System (also applies to Linux, the BSDs, and
Solaris ).

They feature info on Unix, X windows, multiple shells, the Vi editor
the Emacs editor, etc.

The Apendixes and Quick Indexes are tremendous resources for finding
commands. There are summaries of commands for unix, vi, and emacs:
it's worth the price for this alone.

I'm asking $3.00 plus a flat rate shipping/handling charge.

Total price shipped at book rate: $7.00 total in Lower 48 states.
Total price shipped Priorty mail: $10.00 total in Lower 48 states.

For immediate shipment use Paypal; I will, also, accept a prepaid
*Postal* Money order but the books will we be shipped in the order
that I receive payment (I'll return MO's for unfulfilled orders).
Use Paypal and be sure. All sales final.

support for the Palm Pilot.

Houston, Texas (Jan 7, 2002) -- Michael J. Hammel, the Graphics Muse, is
pleased to announce the release of XNotesPlus V3.5.0, a Personal
Information Manager for the Linux and Unix desktop.

XNotesPlus includes support for all major features on the Palm Pilot,

each feature can be downloaded from the Pilot, edited within XNotesPlus and
uploaded back to the Pilot. Additionally, backups and restores of a Pilot

XNotesPlus is available in both source and Red Hat Linux 7.1 dynamically
built binary distributions.

XNotesPlus full featured note system includes audio alarms, color coded
projects, date and calendar inserts, text search / export / import / spell
checking, and integration with the XNotesPlus Address Manager to email notes
to other users.

The Address Manager also includes an integrated envelope printer for various
sized envelopes.

This release of XNotesPlus includes the following new features:

* Extended Pilot support to include install, delete, fetch and list DB's
* Merge multiple XNotes
* Print options for Todo and Address Manager
* Spell checking for XNotes
* Import/export XNotes with Todo and Address Managers

Users of older versions are encouraged to upgrade to this release. Users
are also encouraged to take part on the newly established XNotesPlus
mailings list. Links to the mailing list subscription and archives are
available from the XNotesPlus web site.

Because of the addition of complete Pilot integration and vast stability
improvements, XNotesPlus has reached a new phase in development. As of the
3.4 release, XNotesPlus has become Shareware. Users are encouraged to pay
$10 or more if they find the program useful in order to continue development
of the application. Payments can be made by check or via the XNotesPlus Web

Version 0.3 of SMSTerm is released.

A script to send SMS from the command line, through the ICQ network
has been added, due to popular demand.

grab it at:

http://free.house.cx/~nikhil/SMSTerm-0.3.tar.gz
or
http://free.house.cx/~nikhil/SMSTerm-0.3.tar.bz2

SMSTerm is an application which allows you to communicate with your
computer thru SMS from anywhere. It uses the ICQ2000 protocol to
send/recieve SMS'es.

It launches a shell on a pty, and serves as a bridge between a GSM
mobile phone, and your computer. All data sent to it is sent unaltered
to the spawned shell, and all the output from the shell is sent to the
GSM mobile phone. Its useful for performing some remote administration
systems, especially from areas, where you dont have a connection to
the Internet.

look it up at::

thanx!

Nikhil.
