Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
A new release of the LSM-based SELinux prototype has been put on the
SELinux web site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/>. This release contains
bug fixes and additional policy domains and permissions. The
capability module may now be stacked with SELinux. The base for
SELinux has been updated to the lsm-2001_10_11 patch against kernel
2.4.12.
Security-enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible mandatory
access control architecture into the major subsystems of the Linux
kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of
information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This
allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security
mechanisms to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that
can be caused by malicious or flawed applications. The SELinux web
site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/> contains background information,
documentation, source code, and archives for the selinux mailing-list.

Logilab (www.logilab.com) announces the release of
Narval 1.1
GPL'd Intelligent Personnal Assistant Framework
http://www.logilab.org/narval
News
----
The whole project has moved from python 1.5.2 to python 2.1
A few new features have made it into the engine, such as automatically
reloading modules that have changed on disk, as well as some speed
improvements. Several new modules (automatic classification, LDAP directory
access, checksum computing) have made it into the standard library.
The Horn GUI has been completely redesigned for better flexibility, speed
and better ease of use.
The infopal application (available separately) has received a large number
of improvements.
The mailing lists have been moved to use mailman. More information can be
found at http://lists.logilab.org/mailman/listinfo
Description
===========
Narval is a framework (language + interpreter + GUI/IDE) dedicated to the
setting up of intelligent personal assistants (IPAs).
An Intelligent Personal Assitant is a companion that will help you in your
daily work in the information world. It runs on your machine or on a remote
server, and you can communicate with it via all standard means (email, web,
telnet, phone, specific GUI, etc). It executes recipes (sequences of actions)
you wrote, to perform a wide range of tasks, such as prepare your morning
newspaper, help you surf the web by filtering out junk ads, keep searching
the web day after day for things you want, participe in on-line auctions,
learn you interests and bring you back valuable information, take care of
repetitive chores, answer e-mail, negociate the date and time of a meeting,
and much more... It is easy to extend the built in action library by writing
new actions in Python.
Infopal, your information pal, is a Narval application that implements part of
the above, but Narval makes it easy for you to set up new assistants. Others
applications will soon be available from Logilab.
Logilab S.A. is a French company that specializes in the fields of artificial
intelligence, knowledge management, data analysis and natural language
processing.

Subject: BBLimage 0.65 is now available
The source distribution kit for BBLimage version 0.65 is now available
from
http://www.med.upenn.edu/bbl/publications_downloads/downloads/software.shtml
BBLimage is a collection of tools for processing volume images,
especially medical images; it includes Pyvox, a Python extension
for large multi-dimensional arrays.
Features added in release 0.65 include: Motif is now required only to
compile the qdv image viewer. LAPACK and BLAS are now optional;
BBLimage will use an internal lightweight version if it cannot find
one on the host platform. Compilation and installation on Solaris 8
have been verified using the gcc compiler. New functions row(),
column(), matrix(), point(), and vector() have been added to the pyvox
module; these functions all attempt to convert any reasonable data
format into a Pyvox array of the specified flavor and type double.
BBLimage is currently available as an alpha release under an open-
source license and is written in ANSI C and designed to be easily
portable to any Unix or Posix-compatible platform. Some programs also
require the X Window System.

This message announces the October meeting of the Bergen Linux User
Group (BLUG) in Bergen, Norway. The rest of the message is in
Norwegian.
Medlemsmøte: Last Thursday
Bergen Linux User Group fortsetter sin møteserie Last Thursday for
Linux-brukere og andre interesserte.
Torsdag 25. oktober 2001 klokken 19.00 (sorry, feil i forrige post -p)
Stort auditorium
Høyteknologisenteret
Thormøhlens gate 55, Bergen
Programmet for møtet er:
* IP versjon 6: fremtidens Internett i dag, ved Stig Venaas. Stig
deg inn i.
Vi benytter oss igjen av muligheten til å minne om BLUGs hjemmeside,
som langsomt vokser innholds- og utformingsmessig på
url:http://www.blug.linux.no. Der finner du løpende oppdatert info om
brukergruppen og annet linux-relatert stoff. En annen viktig kanal for

Thanks!
==========[snip]========
KSnuffle, the KDE network packet sniffer, is now available for download
from:
ftp://195.92.31.34/ksnuffle-2.2/ksnuffle-2.2.tgz
This version has been built against a fairly recent KDE2.1 CVS snapshot.
The manual pages are online at
http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.manual
The main change from 2.1 is a work-around for the forthcoming KDE
change whereby setuid programs will not be run.
Please note that if the remote sniffer interface is not compatible with
2.0 and earlier versions. If you use remote sniffers, then you will need to
reinstall the rsnuffle daemon.
A few people have asked about RPMs. Sorry, none avaiable. I've got a
non-standard setup anyway, and there are two many combinations (RH, Suse,
Mandrake, installed under /usr or /opt/kde, etc.) to do this. Volunteers?

Mike Richardson

=====[The Actual Announcement]========================================
KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:
* Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
* Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
* Multiple concurrent monitors
* Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
* Textual display of network traffic overview
* Full(er) details of protocol and application data available
* Display of data in TCP/IP streams
* Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
* Parallel display of multiple load histograms
* Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
* Support for use by selected non-root users
* Plugin support - 0.8 contains plugins for
* TCP/IP stream monitoring
* DNS lookup monitoring,
* Traffic summaries
* End-to-End summaries
In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP and ICMP. Packet decoding does not go down into the
application level except for DNS packets.
Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.
KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-2.1/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.
