>From the 110 Southbound

Exit Adams

Go _straight_, you'll hit Figueroa, take a right (south)

Pass Adams

Pass Jefferson and turn right into Gate 3

Park in the parking structure to the left, there is a $6 charge

After you park

Once you've parked exit the parking structure the way you came in, and turn left
(i.e. away from the gate). Walk along the path and you'll be walking toward
three buildings. The one slightly to the left of the end of the path is VKC, it
has red brick, and a tall tower on top of the building with a large golden globe
on the top of the tower. On the right of VKC is SOS, it's very short, and to the
right of that is a very tall building. Right behind these buildings is THH
(Taper Hall of Humanities). This is the building you want. It's very long, and
L-shaped. Towards the right is an overhand and some glass doors, go in there and
we're the second room on your right. Room 102.

Subject: PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, v1.15.0 released
From: berto@gsbrgo.uchicago.edu ()

PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, v1.15.0 has been released.

PIKT, an innovative new paradigm for administering heterogeneous networked
workstations, is a cross-platform, multi-functional toolkit for monitoring
systems, reporting and fixing problems, and managing system configurations.
You can also use PIKT as a basis for managing system security. PIKT
consists of an embedded scripting language with unique, labor-saving
features; a sophisticated script and system config file preprocessor,
scheduler, and installer; and other useful tools. PIKT is a category buster
with many, many different uses limited only by your ingenuity and imagination.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 1.15.0:

--Implemented per-slave authentication keys (so that the piktmaster shares
  a unique set of secret keys with each slave system).
--Introduced a new utility, rkey, for generating random authentication keys
  in keys.conf.
--Added the 'piktc -p' option for installing to slave systems PIKT.conf
  files with updated keys.
--Added ARP (MAC/ethernet address) piktmaster authentication.
--Completely revamped the configs_samples, increasing modularity,
  maintainability, clarity, ease of use, comprehensiveness, and accuracy.
--Revamped the configs_starter, and expanded the Tutorial to include
  Getting Started material. The expanded Tutorial is now based on the
  configs_starter.
--Introduced command path overrides (e.g., of arpcmd) in PIKT.conf.
--Fixed several bugs, clarified some error messages, and made other code
  improvements.

See the "PIKT Changes" section of the distribution NEWS file, also the
ChangeLog file, for further details.

Other significant developments:

--We've moved! The official URL for the PIKT Project is now http://pikt.org.
  This is actually a link to the PIKT page at the Open Channel Foundation
  (OCF; http://http://www.openchannelfoundation.org/), the project's new
  organizational "home".
--OCF's commercial arm, Open Channel Software, is offering, at modest cost,
  technical support services and (fairly soon) other PIKT "add-ons" and
  peripherals. For more information, please visit the OCF PIKT page at
  http://www.openchannelfoundation.com/projects/PIKT.
--In spite of this new relationship, "core" PIKT--the essential framework,
  basically everything accomplished by the project so far--is now and will
  forever remain GPLed, free in cost, and freely available. Work on
  improving and extending the PIKT "core" will continue.

PIKT is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Available now for
GNU/Linux, AIX, Digital UNIX, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, OpenBSD, SCO OpenServer,
Solaris, and SunOS. For more info, and complete source code, documentation,
and sample configurations, please visit the PIKT Web site at: http://pikt.org

Subject: Deleting old Linux Counter accounts

The Linux Counter Project (http://counter.li.org/) is removing dead
accounts on November 1:

==========
Deleting old accounts
=====================
Over the 7 years that the Linux Counter has been operative, a lot of
people have registered who can no longer be verified.

We do not want to publish false data to the world. So we have to
remove the data when it is too old, and have decided to give two grace
periods:
 * Two years for entries with an email that might be valid
 * One year for entries without a valid email entry
More technical details are available:
 * http://counter.li.org/organization/drop-people.php

Since there has not been any routine for this before, there is a
backlog of almost 100.000 entries. We have decided to pull the whole
backlog at once on November 1.

After this date, the aged-out entries will not be included in the
Linux Counter user count, and will not receive email notifications
from the counter.

What you can do
===============
First: LOG IN!
Any account logged into will not be removed (for another 2 years). If
you don't have your registration number, just log in with your (old or
new) email address. If you don't have the key, follow the prompts on
the login page to get it mailed to you.

Second: TELL OTHERS.
Lots of people have registered and forgotten about it. Some of them
even have their names out on the lists of users, but don't know
it. (It is possible to be counted, but not shown in the lists. Privacy
is important to us!)

Lots of people might want to register, if they only knew it was
possible - showing the world that the Linux community is growing is
very important!

Third, and if you feel you want to: JOIN IN!
The Counter Project needs manpower - people willing to manage
countries or contribute to the code base. Look at the organizational
pages (http://counter.li.org/organization/) and decide how YOU want to
contribute.

Welcome back to the Linux Counter!
==========

On behalf of The Linux Counter Project
 - Anders

From: j.anders@informatik.tu-chemnitz.de (Joerg Anders)
Subject: Linux:noteedit:drum notes

noteedit-1.15.0 is available:

  http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features:
=============

  - drum notes

Thanks to Erik Sigra <sigra@home.se >
====================================

He made some changes which make noteedit more KDE conform. Among them:

  - konqueror embedding
        (still experimental. Perhaps a KDE guru can explain to
         me how to set the keyboard focus into embedded widget.)
  - all icons in 3 different sizes (16x16, 22x22, 32x32)
  - Online help (requires KDE >= 2.2)

Aspects of exportation/working of/with drum notes
==================================================

I introduced 2 different drum clefs for MIDI mapping: The
"normal" drum clef maps like treble clef. The other has
an arrow downward and maps like bass clef.

MusiXTeX
========

All 5 drum notes are supported in MusiXTeX.

LilyPond
========

First of all: I was told my drum exportation doesn't
use all LilyPond featurs. Perhaps a LilyPond guru can
review the noteedit-LilyPond output and send me a mail
what to to.

The drum notes export works but with some side effects.
All notes in a chord appear with the same drum note type.
Only 3 of the 5 types are supported.

PMX
---

Drum notes are not suported in PMX.

MUP
---

The MUP compatibility ends here. MUP doesn't support drum notes.
Noteedit "extends" the MUP syntax to correctly restore the score. Noteedit will
warn you, because (of course) the result isn't Mup-able.

other features:
==============

   - insertion/deletion/modification of notes, rests, dotted notes/rests,
     tied notes, slured notes, clefs with/without shift, time signatures,
     key signatures, volume signatures, tempo signatures, triplets, repeat
     groups with/without special ending and instrument changes on different
     staffs;
   - stem up/down
   - zoom
   - building chords;
   - trills;
   - (de-)crescendo
   - fermata;
   - forzato, portato, strong pizzicato, sforzando;
   - building groups of beamed notes;
   - multiple voices per staff
   - multilingual (German version Swedish version)
   - playing on /dev/sequencer (if correctly configured) whereby:
        o giving each staff a different voice;
        o giving each staff a different channel;
        o giving each staff a different reverbation and chorus;
        o highlighting the played notes;
        o muting staffs;
   - lyrics
   - export MusiXTeX;
   - export PMX;
   - export MIDI;
   - import MIDI;
   - read from MIDI keyboard;
   - Application of MIDI event filters to eliminate
     some dirty effects (especially on human played MIDI files);
   - record from MIDI keyboard;
   - saving an restoring the files. The fileformat is similarily to the
     format of the music publication program (MUP). So you if you are a MUP
     user you have the possibility to convert the files into MIDI and
     Postscript. But this is no longer necessary because noteedit can export
     MusiXTeX, PMX and MIDI.
   - autosave with configurable autosave interval;
   - load last processed file (configurable)

From: John in SD <johninsd@hotmail.com>
Subject: LILO version 22.0.2 released
Reply-To: johninsd@hotmail.com

LILO release 22.0.2 is a bugfix update to version 22.0.

LILO release 22.0 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.

Version 22 is a major update to versions 21 .. 21.7.5.

o A graphical user interface using VGA 640x480x16 (mode 0x12) is added.
o Secure passwords are implemented using four CRC-32 polynomials.
o RAID1 codes are completely re-written, and correctly implement 'lock',
   'fallback', and "lilo -R ..."

THE NEW RAID1 IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VERSION 21.

Those using version 21 should read 'README.raid1' before installing these
new codes. There is a compatibility mode (lilo -x mbr-only) for existing
RAID1 installations which are not going to be converted to the Version 22
implementation.

Source code is available for download from:

  http://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo         (developer's site)
   ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo

Or from the main distribution site:

   ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo    (please use)

See the distribution file 'CHANGES' for details of the differences between
22.0 and prior releases.

From: "M. Leo Cooper" <thegrendel@theriver.com>
Subject: Advanced Bash Scripting Guide, version 1.0 release

Announcing the release of version 1.0 of the "Advanced Bash Scripting Guide".
This tutorial and reference on shell scripting is the equivalent of a 400-page
printed book, with over 200 profusely commented examples and a number of
tables.

The 36 chapters begin with a gentle introduction to scripting, progress
through basic topics, such as variables, looping, and testing, then go on to
advanced subjects, such as I/O redirection and command substitution. The
coverage of scripting knowledge is virtually complete.

           "This tutorial assumes no previous knowledge of scripting
            or programming, but progresses rapidly toward an
            intermediate/advanced level of instruction (...all the
            while sneaking in little snippets of UNIX wisdom and
            lore). It serves as a textbook, a manual for self-study,
            and a reference and source of knowledge on shell scripting
            techniques. The exercises and heavily-commented examples
            invite active reader participation, under the premise that
            the only way to really learn scripting is to write scripts."

               --- From the introduction to the book

This book is released under the LDP license
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/manifesto.html), which essentially means that it is
free and freely distributable.

I would like to thank all the people in the Linux community who contributed
suggestions, advice, bugfixes, and time and effort to this project. The book
could not have gotten to this stage if it were not for all the help I've
received.
