From: j.anders@informatik.tu-chemnitz.de (Joerg Anders)
Subject: Linux:noteedit:multiple voices per staff
Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 08:43:49 CST

noteedit-1.14.3 is available:

  http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features:
=============

  - multiple voices per staff (see/hear: example10.not);
  - export of variable length trills to LilyPond
       (requires LilyPond > 1.5.1);
  - export of triplets with length ratio 2:1 to PMX
  - score information (author, title, ...)
  - transpose of ranges/groups of staff
  - change clef
  - multilingual (see below)
  - compilation with some wrong installed LEXs on some Linux distributions possible

Thanks to Erik Sigra <sigra@home.se >
====================================

He made some changes which make noteedit more KDE conform. Among them:
  - multilingual features. Thus, noteedit now has a:
     o Swedish version (translation by Erik Sigra, please contact sigra@home.se for comments)
     o German version (translation by Erik Sigra/J.Anders, please contact ja@informatik.tu-chemnitz.de for comments)
  - The configuration is saved in $HOME/.kde2/share/config/noteeditrc. This obsoletes noteedit.cfg
  - configuration of general appearance (background color, staff color, ...);
  - autosave with configurable autosave interval;
  - load last processed file (configurable)

Aspects of exportation/working of multiple voices per staff
==================================================

      First of all: Please read the documentation:

        http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/doc/docu.html#mulvoices

      The multiple voice interface is a logical problem because it means to insert
      a note/or rest somewhere where already a note sounds. The trick is: How can the
      user determine the start time?

LilyPond
=======

LilyPond is best prepared for multiple voices per staff. But do not
forget the keep stem dir. checkbox! Otherwise LilyPond applies the
default stem rules which gives bad results.

MusiXTeX
=======

Paradox: Although MusiXTeX has now special syntax constructs for multiple
voices per staff you can export as many voices as you want
to MusiXTeX because many MusiXTeX commands rather describe a (turtle) graphic than music.

But the multiple voices per staff cause a new export error: Too many beams!
MusiXTeX allows as many beams as staffs. So, if you
have only one voice per staff there are always enough beams.
But with multiple voices per staff theoretically all available beams can be in
first staff. Thus, no beam rests for the other staffs.

PMX
---

PMX allows 2 voices per staff (There are some tricks to achieve more.
But no systematical syntax constructions which are successfull in
all cases.). Noteedit warns you and omits the supernumerary voices.

MUP
---

MUP can process up to 3 voices per staff. But it hats stem statements if a staff
has multiples voices. But Noteedit always produces stem
statements to correctly restore the score. This causes tons of warnings during
MUP processing. Ignore them all! MUP in turn will ignore all
stem statements.

If a staff has more than 3 voices Noteedit "extends" the MUP syntax.
Of course, the result is not MUP-able. Noteedit warns you in this case.

other features:
==============

   - insertion/deletion/modification of notes, rests, dotted notes/rests,
     tied notes, slured notes, clefs with/without shift, time signatures,
     key signatures, volume signatures, tempo signatures, triplets, repeat
     groups with/without special ending and instrument changes on different
     staffs;
   - stem up/down
   - zoom
   - building chords;
   - trills;
   - (de-)crescendo
   - fermata;
   - forzato, portato, strong pizzicato, sforzando;
   - building groups of beamed notes;
   - playing on /dev/sequencer (if correctly configured) whereby:
        o giving each staff a different voice;
        o giving each staff a different channel;
        o giving each staff a different reverbation and chorus;
        o highlighting the played notes;
        o muting staffs;
   - lyrics
   - export MusiXTeX;
   - export PMX;
   - export MIDI;
   - import MIDI;
   - read from MIDI keyboard;
   - Application of MIDI event filters to eliminate
     some dirty effects (especially on human played MIDI files);
   - record from MIDI keyboard;
   - saving an restoring the files. The fileformat is similarily to the
     format of the music publication program (MUP). So you if you are a MUP
     user you have the possibility to convert the files into MIDI and
     Postscript. But this is no longer necessary because noteedit can export
     MusiXTeX, PMX and MIDI.

GNU Solfege 1.2.1
=================

http://www.solfege.org
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/solfege
binaries: some available at www.solfege.org
email: solfege-devel at lists.sourceforge.net
copyright: GPL

Solfege is a gtk+-based eartraining program. It can be run on
computers with python 1.5, gtk+ (1.2.x) and the PyGTK python
bindings (0.6.3) for gtk, but you will get a better GUI if you
also have the gnome libs and PyGNOME 1.0.50 installed. It is
known to run on Debian potato and woody, and RedHat 6.2 and 7.0,
but it should work on other linux distros too. It even runs on
MS Windows.

The new 1.2.0 release is more an evolution than a revolution
compared to 1.0.5:
News since the last stable release (1.0.5):
 * lessonfiles: extended syntax for random_transpose.
 * music parser and displayer module(mpd):
   - improved layout for noteheads
   - bugfixes to key signature and accidental handling code.
   - support 8 new clefs
   - added tuplets!
   - small syntax change to be in sync with GNU Lilypond: you should
     not use a semicolon after \key, \clef and \time commands.
 * Better sound on MS Windows using a new sound module.
 * Moved the configuration of the identify-scale exercise to
   config page to be more consistent with the rest of the exercises.
 * Misc other small bugfixes and improvements to the code.

LinuxCertified.com, a leading provider of Linux training, will be
offering the latest class in its portfolio, the Network Services
Bootcamp, on September 29-30, 2001 in San Francisco bay area
(south bay) . This workshop has been designed for network
administrators in charge of providing key network services on
Linux servers.

This bootcamp is structured along the lines of the highly successful
Linux System Administration bootcamp. Students get a powerful
Linux laptop at the start of the class, along with other class
materials.
Their goal is to create a fully functional and secure Linux server.

This server will provide the most important internet services such as
Web, DNS, Mail, DHCP and File serving.

Students start by putting the system securely on an intranet. They
are then led by a team of network experts via carefully designed
lectures and labs to configure the network services mentioned above.
Students take this laptop with them as a fully configured network
server to further enhance their Linux expertise.

Linux and open source network applications such as Apache, BIND,
Sendmail, SAMBA etc. are the building blocks for most network
services being offered today within the organizations as well as on the
internet. This bootcamp enables administrators to rapidly and securely
provide these services to their clients. A detailed agenda for the
bootcamp is available at:

Subject: mp3blaster 3.0 - interactive text-console mp3 player
Reply-To: bram@cola.as.avontuur.org

Hello,

I have released a new version of mp3blaster, version 3.0. Mp3blaster
is an interactive text-based program that plays various (mp3,wav,..) audio
files. It is one of the very few mp3 players for the text console that
allows full interactive control during playback. Another important feature
is the ease with which one can create and store playlists grouped by albums.

Important recent changes are:
-implemented 'previous track', and therefore switched to the first 3.0
 stable version since albeit all functions from 2.* now work.
-"--enable-newthreads" configure option auto-enables pth instead of pthreads
-more patches from Martijn van Buul for better 'newthreads' playback - please
 test! 'newthreads' is still beta.

You can download mp3blaster from these places:
http://www.stack.nl/~brama/mp3blaster.html
ftp://mud.stack.nl/pub/mp3blaster/
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/sound/players/ (soon after this post)
