libbadpenguin 1.0.2 - generic library and scripts for console tools development

[english]

libbadpenguin is a small static library used in many utilities that are
part of the Antonio Gallo's (AGX) GNU/Linux distribution "Bad Penguin".
It provides functions to manage the filesystem, double linked lists
(chains), terminal (cursor and color) and to handle TAR archives.

libbadpenguin goal is to speed-up the development of console tools
and utilities without requiring big static libraries such as
'ncurses' or 'GNU glib'. libbadpenguin is indeed to be small as
possibile in order to be linked statically avoiding dependencie
problems between different GNU/Linux distributions.

libbadpenguin include a directory scripts. This is a collection
of scripts used from other binaries and configuration tool
from "Bad Penguin". It provides scripts to manage the
filesystem or to automate some user operations.
One particular script is "untar" that is used as a frontend
to explode the most common archive formats like rpm, deb, tgz,
bzipped files and more.

Please, download from:
    http://ftp.badpenguin.org/pub/software/
    http://www.badpenguin.org/

in formato TAR.

formati di archiviazione o pacchettizzazione come rpm, deb, tgz,
bzip ed altri.

Subject: Functional Objects Announces its Linux Alpha Test Program

[Functional Developer is a development environment for Dylan, a
high-level dynamic object-oriented programming language. Previously,
Functional Developer was only available for Windows.]

Functional Objects, Inc. is pleased to announce the commencement of an
Alpha Test Program for Functional Developer for Linux.

If you are interested in signing up for this program, please visit our
website at <http://www.functionalobjects.com/products/linux.phtml>.

Functional Developer Version 2.1 [Alpha 1] for x86 Linux is available
for immediate download by members of our Alpha Test Program. Alpha 1
is limited to a command-line compiler and a subset of our runtime
libraries. The compiler produces native code comparable in quality to
our Version 2.0 Windows release. The runtime libraries included in
Alpha 1 are roughly those included in the Core Libraries Pack and the
Basic Network Connectivity Library Pack of our Version 2.0 Windows
release.

Additional alpha and beta releases will follow as new functionality,
newly ported libraries, performance enhancements, or major bug fixes
warrant. (For example, we are working closely in cooperation with the
Gwydion group to complete the port of DUIM to Linux using GTK.)

I've enclosed an edited excerpt from the Release Notes which describes
the contents of this release in detail. Again, please review the
complete Release Notes, available on our website, before downloading.
The Release Notes contain installation instructions, a list of known
limitations, and a list of major changes in this release.

Thank you for your continued support,

  - Gary Palter
    Linux Alpha Test Program Coordinator
    Functional Objects, Inc.

CONTENTS OF RELEASE
...
This section describes the contents of the current release.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

Two command-line compilers are included in this release.

The first, fdcompile, is equivalent to fdbc in the Windows release.
For a brief description of its command line options, run

    fdcompile -help

  ...

The second compiler, xfdcompile, is a subset of fdce in the Windows
release. Eventually, it will replace fdcompile but is, for now,
considered experimental ... Again, for a brief description of its
  command line options, run

    xfdcompile -help

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

The libraries included in this release are:

    Dylan Common-Dylan Functional-Dylan
    Collections IO System
    Generic-Arithmetic Big-Integers
    C-FFI Network
    TestWorks TestWorks-Specs

The source code of all of the above libraries except the Dylan
library is also included in this release. If a library's source
code is not explicitly marked as open source, it is included for
  reference purposes only.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

This release includes several simple examples located in

    /usr/local/lib/functional-developer/examples/

  ...

In addition, test suites for the following libraries are also
  included in this release:

    Dylan Common-Dylan Functional-Dylan
    Collections IO System
    TestWorks

  ...

With the exception of the Functional-Dylan test suite, the test
suites are open source. We appreciate any contributions you may
wish to make to these suites.

libgringo 3.0.3 - binary and library replacement for cdialog that work both
                  in console and in X-Window

[english]

libgringo is a library to write apps that runs both in console (using
ncurses) as well under X-Window (using gtk). You are free and encouraged to
add support for other GPL libraries (like slang as example).

libgringo spirits is "write one, run more". It provides some widgets like
windows, labels, buttons, edit boxes, checkboxes, grids and listboxes.

libgringo detect if you are running from the console or under X-Window and
select the right library to use without recompiling your code.

gringosh is a parser that use libgringo to replace cdialog. It was written
in order to make some configuration scripts to work both in console and
under X-Window without any modification. gringosh also provide more powerfull
features than cdialog, as for example, the ability to have more than two button
per form.

gringosh recive in input a description of the window to draw on then screen
then it output on the standard error all the status of any widgets when the
user make some choice, this is to allow shell script to parse the results
and to create very powerfull scripts.

[italian]

Essa
fornisce differenti oggetti grafici come finestre, etichette, bottoni, caselle

script molto potenti.

Subject: Advanced Bash Scripting Guide update

Announcing the version 0.5 update of the "Advanced Bash Scripting Guide".

This is a complete ebook (equivalent of 360+ printed pages).

  ====================================================================

This document is both a tutorial and a reference on shell scripting
with Bash. It assumes no previous knowledge of scripting or
programming, but progresses rapidly toward an intermediate/advanced
level of instruction. [1] The exercises and heavily-commented
  examples invite active reader participation.

This project has evolved into a comprehensive book that compares
favorably with any of the shell scripting manuals in print. It may serve
as a textbook, a manual for self-study, and a reference and source of
  knowledge on shell scripting techniques.

  ====================================================================

This book is free, and freely distributable under the guidelines of the Linux
Documentation Project (http://linuxdoc.org).

From: Stefan Westerfeld <stefan@space.twc.de>
Subject: aRts-0.6.0 standalone release

aRts-0.6.0 is available as standalone release.

What is it?
============
This release contains a standalone version of the aRts sound server. Running
artsd will allow you to let multiple applications play and record sounds at
once, network transparently. Besides being a very modular sound server, aRts
is also a media framework.

The core design of the aRts framework involves several concepts:
 * sound (or other media streams) is produced and processed in small modules,
which are connected to achieve the desired effect
 * communication through MCOP - the multimedia communication protocol, enables
multiple applications running in seperate processes to work together at
   media oriented tasks

aRts is good at midi synthesis, realtime processing, a useful tool for
creating music, but also at applying effects, filters, decoding media, and
so on. Plugins can be easily added. It's a good base for applications.

Note that this is a standalone release. Most people currently use aRts in
conjunction with KDE (aRts is included in all versions >= KDE2.0). The
standalone release is lacking a lot of frontend code for most advanced
tasks. This means: whereas the sound server itself is really stable and
usable for everybody, arts-extras currently is probably something for
developers.

Changes since arts-0.5.4:
=========================

* finished Arts::InputStream/Arts::StreamPlayObject interface for decoding
  streaming media
* added Arts::PitchablePlayObject for changing playing speed/pitch of media
  on the fly

libhardware 0.5.4 - generic library for hardware detecting

[english]

libhardware is a very small static library used in many utilities that
are part of the Antonio Gallo's (AGX) GNU/Linux distribution "Bad Penguin".
It provides functions to access information about the hardware of your system,
to detect it and to handle kernel module automatically.

libhardware is able to:
- enumerate all the PCI devices;
- enumerate all the EIDE disks and cdroms;
- enumerate all the SCSI disks and cdroms;
- enumerate all the EIDE/SCSI disk partitions;
- checking if a detected device is supported from the Linux kernel
  using a custom PCI database
- provide the "scanmodule" utility;

Please, contribute installing libhardware on your system and checking that
all your devices are correctly identified. Libhardware has its own database
device that needs to be completed.
