Subject: LessTif Release 0.92.98 is out
The LessTif Core Team is pleased to announce
Release 0.92.98
of the LessTif library!
This "pico" release is a preparation for the first major release
of LessTif in 2001.
That'll follow soon.
This will be the first major release that works well with GNU Emacs!
Other highlights include bugfixes involving NEdit, improved
internationalisation (i18n) support, and a first implementation
of printing support (works with Xinvest).
As usual we fixed some bugs in the libraries and tried to further
improve the configuration and build process.
Check out the NOTES and ChangeLog files for details on what we have done!
>From this release on, Xbae and Xlt, two widget sets that have been a part
of LessTif releases for a while, are separated from LessTif.
They will be released separately from now on, to keep release schedule
problems and configuration headaches to a minimum.
About LessTif:
LessTif is a LGPL'd implementation of the OSF/Motif standard GUI toolkit
for X11. LessTif aims to be source compatible with the OSF/Motif versions 1.2
and 2.1. We're almost done with the 1.2 part, but we still lack
some substantial parts of the 2.1 functionality. (Actually
most 2.x applications do already build, but may not work properly yet.)
So at this point, almost all Motif 1.2 apps compile and run
out of the box with LessTif! The LessTif Core team is interested
in hearing about Motif applications which don't work with LessTif.
Bug reports are welcome; patches are even more welcome!
More information, source code, and binaries for several platforms
are available at:

Subject: Linux@Home
Dear Linux users,
a new Linux site is growing up: http://www.linux-at-home.net
The Linux@Home site is pointed to Italian users and its role in the Linux
Community is to enlarge Linux diffusion to all people, especially to novel
users who have no experience on PCs.
The Linux@Home site is fully opened to external contributors, both with
configuration articles and structural tips. Authors' names are stored in a
"Staff page" in the site. Articles must be free or under GFDL license.
I hope the site will be supported from the Linux Community for the growth
of this great operative system and its diffusion as and more than
Microsoft's OS.
English articles will be translated in italian language and are welcome.
Thanks a lot to all,
Paolo Gaggini

Reply-To: chris@lowth.com
Hi,
Update 2 of protector 1.00 has been released for RedHat 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.0
and 7.1 systems.
This update of the protector software provides a new utility called "revive"
that can be used to revive rejected attachments removed from incoming mails,
and a note in the user guide document "GUIDE.html" describing how to use it.
Version 1.01 is also now available as a development beta release, for
testing and documentation. This reworked protector release handles MS office
and other document formats more intellegently - including the checking of
embedded objects - but it is currently still under development..
For information and download of bother versions, visit the protector web site:
http://protector.sourceforge.net
Protector checks incoming e-mail messages for attachments that could
contain viruses, worms etc - and replaces the offending attachments with
standard warning messages before being passed to "procmail" for local
delivery. The original "dangerous" attachment is saved in a directory that
only the root user can access.
Protector is NOT a virus scanner in the traditional sense: It does NOT
scan attachments for virus signatures, but blocks attachments that could
contain viruses. So *.exe, *.vba etc attachments don't get through.
This means that you don't have to keep protector up to date to stay
protected against the growing tide of new viruses and worms.
Protector does not work by blocking listed types, but by blocking ALL BUT
the listed types. For details of the attachment types "allowed through",
please refer to the web site.
The logic employed by protector to determine the file types contained in
attachments is based on a modified version of the "file" command, and a
number of type-specific validation programs - it does not rely on the
actual name of the file, or the "content-type" declared in the attachment
header. It also looks inside ZIP, TAR and other archive formats, and
checks the files contained in them.
Some types of files are allowed through only under certain conditions. The
main example being that MS Word documents are blocked if they contain ANY
macros, but allowed through otherwise.
It isn't perfect yet, but it's a start. Assistance in developing the
checking logic for new file types is invited.
Chris.
