Subject: Introducing Linux to newbies with a nice presentation

Hello everybody,

I have made a presentation on Linux OS with MS
PowerPoint, which is totally oriented towards MS
Windows people with little knowledge on this
wonderful OS.

Has 30 slides discussing its history, technical
features, myths, issues, supporting companies, and
its future. Sidewalks abound within the show, talking
some stats, comparing it with NT, listing some
popular apps for it, and so on.

Since messages to mailing lists are often appreciated
when short, I would like to finish by saying that
this got a high rating when I presented it in my
class.

If any of you want to see it, download free from:
http://www.geocities.com/netmaniac00/stuffs.html

Also spread the word among your friends and
neighbours, who are very reluctant to switch to Linux
simply because of the absence of an enlightening
show!

Bye, Deepak.

Subject: Linux@Home

Dear Linux users,

a new Linux site is growing up: http://www.linux-at-home.net

The Linux@Home site is pointed to Italian users and its role in the Linux
Community is to enlarge Linux diffusion to all people, especially to novel
users who have no experience on PCs.

The Linux@Home site is fully opened to external contributors, both with
configuration articles and structural tips. Authors' names are stored in a
"Staff page" in the site. Articles must be free or under GFDL license.

I hope the site will be supported from the Linux Community for the growth
of this great operative system and its diffusion as and more than
Microsoft's OS.

English articles will be translated in italian language and are welcome.

Thanks a lot to all,
Paolo Gaggini

Subject: [LOCAL] Aug 7 LUGOD Meeting: Linux-controlled Library Robots

The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD), will be holding a meeting on:

  Tuesday
  August 7, 2001
  6:30pm - 9:30pm

The meeting will be held at:

  Z-World, Inc.
  2900 Spafford Street
  Davis, CA 95616

The topic will be:

  Automated Retrieval System (Robotic Cranes)
presented by Michael Egan, Sonoma State University

The ARS is an Automated Retrieval System for
patrons to gain access to infrequently accessed books
stored in long term storage bins. It uses a central
manager system separate from the on-line catalog to
keep track of bin contents, and commands robotic
cranes to access bins with items requested by patrons.

Sonoma State University Library chose to use a Linux kernel as
the heart of their ARS-controlling OS because of its fault
tolerance, efficiency, aggressive development cycle, detailed
  documentation, and excellent support.

From: Jim Jozwiak <av832@lafn.org>
Subject: Nut 6.0 Nutrition Software

Nut analyzes your meals for nutrients. It displays vitamins, minerals,
protein, carbohydrate, fiber, and fatty acids either as a percentage
of the "Daily Value" (the familiar standard of food labeling in the USA),
or in grams. It comes with the recent USDA Nutrient Database for
Standard Reference, Release 14, which contains 6039 foods.

Nut allows you to experiment with your nutrition, and judge for yourself
which of the conflicting ideas on nutrition are correct.

The program is available from:

ftp://ftp.metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/apps/misc/nut-6.0.tar.gz

Nut is entirely menu-driven, and there are no commands to learn. You
may look at the foods individually, or sort them by nutrient level. After
you have entered at least one meal in the database, Nut will tell you
which foods are contributing which nutrients to your diet. Foods can
be entered in servings, grams, or ounces. Recipes can be made up of
foods already in the database. Daily calories can be set to scale the
"Daily Values" up and down, and you can also set the levels of the
polyunsaturated fatty acids and protein.

In addition, Nut displays some derived fields not in the database, such
as nutritive (non-fiber) carbohydrates, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids,
as well as percentages of calories from carbs, protein, and fat (i.e.,
40-30-30). It displays the balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty
acids not by simply adding them together, but by using the equation which
predicts tissue concentrations (and thus eicosanoid production) as a result
of diet.

Nut is a console program with a simple and intuitive design that I have
personally used for seven years.

Subject: start an LPI study group in Houston,TX

hello,
I'm interested in starting an LPI study group in Houston, TX. I've looked
around here but none seem to be available. There are "schools" that say
they teach that but most of those "schools" are a scam.
I've met several people who've had bad ( and also expensive) experiences
with those IT training centers.
I just want to start a group with other people interested in studying for
the LPI tests.
Any people interested please email me.

Thank you,

From: Alan W Black <awb@cs.cmu.edu>
Subject: Festival Speech Synthesis System 1.4.2-release

The Festival Speech Synthesis System version 1.4.2
and Edinburgh Speech Tools Library version 1.2.2
                            25th July 2001

Festival offers a general framework for building speech synthesis
systems as well as including examples of various modules. As a whole
it offers full text to speech through a number APIs: from shell level,
though a Scheme command interpreter, as a C++ library, from Java, and
an Emacs interface. Festival is multi-lingual (currently English
(British and American), and Spanish) though English is the most
advanced. Other groups release new languages for the system.
And full tools and documentation for build new voices are
availabel through Carnegie Mellon's FestVox project (http://festvox.org)

The system is written in C++ and uses the Edinburgh Speech Tools
Library for low level architecture and has a Scheme (SIOD) based
command interpreter for control. Documentation is given in the FSF
texinfo format which can generate, a printed manual, info files and
HTML.

Festival is free software. Festival and the speech tools are
distributed under an X11-type licence allowing unrestricted commercial
and non-commercial use alike.

This distribution includes:
   * Full English (British and American English) text to speech
   * Full C++ source for modules, SIOD interpreter, and Scheme library
   * Lexicon based on CMULEX and OALD (OALD is restricted to non-commercial
     use only)
   * Edinburgh Speech Tools, low level C++ library
   * British English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
   * 2 American English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
   * 4 other voices using MBROLA based diphone synthesis (1 British Male,
2 American Males and 1 American Female).
   * Castilian Spanish Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 11k version)
   * British English Male (for spike excited LPC resynthesis 10k version)
   * Full documentation (html, postscript and GNU info format)

Festival version 1.4.2 sources, voices, and Linux binaries are
available from
    http://festvox.org/festival

Requirements

To run Festival you need:
   * A Unix machine, Festival has compiled and run on Suns (SunOS and
Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, SGIs and DEC Alphas but should be portable
     to any standard Unix machine.
   * A C++ compiler: we have used GCC  version 2.7.2, 2.95.x
SunCC 4.1 nd 4.2, and egcs. Other C++ compilers are
probably possible with perhaps some minor chanages
   * GNU Make any recent version
   * Audio hardware, /dev/audio (8 bit and 16 bit on Suns, Linux
and FreeBSD) and NCD's NAS network transparent audio system
are supported directly but Festival supports the execution of
any Unix command that can play audio files.

There is also support for building the system under Windows NT and
95/98/2000. We have successfully ran the system complied with Cygnus'
GNU win32 package and Microsoft's Visual C++, instructions are
included

We intend to distribute binary distributions for major
architectures particularly Linux and Solaris, we will
also be releasing binaries for Windows.

New in 1.4.2 version
   * Support for the new versions of C++ that have been released
   * Visual C++ 6.0 suport
   * uses configure
   * substantial updates to the clunits unit selection module
a simple talking clock voice is included in the release
more general unit selection voices will follow
   * lots of small bugs fixeds
   * a few very hard bugs fixes
       (client/server race condition)
(dropped bytes in reading files when machine overloaded)
       (FreeBSD memory/gc problem)
   * default waverform type is now RIFF.
   * "Building Voices in Festival" document describing process of building
     new voices in the system
       http://festvox.org/

With this release we wish to remember Dr Mike W Macon of OGI who
passed away in March 2001. Mike was one of the first non-Edinburgh
people to take on Festival and make substantial improvements. His
diphone voice and LPC code (mwm_diphone/OGIresLPC) is one of the best
diphone voices in the system. We worked closely him and enjoyed and
number of joint visits, and we acknowledge his help with the whole
system. However his code, and his voice will continue to speak to
us.

Subject: GNU MDK version 0.3.5 released
From: "Jose A. Ortega Ruiz" <jaortega@acm.org>

GNU MDK 0.3.5 has been released. It is available from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mdk/ and mirrors of that site (see list of
mirror sites at http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html) [0].

GNU MDK provides a simulator of D. Knuth's MIX computer, and a
development environment to write, run and debug MIXAL programs on it.

New in this release:

** In gmixvm, when the mouse pointer is over a MIXAL source line, the
status bar shows the value of the variables appearing in this line.
