=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
iCanProgram.com is opening registrations for its Introduction to Linux
Programming Course (http://www.icanprogram.com).
All course work is done from lessons posted online over an 8 week
period.
The course is structured like an "Open Source" project. All students
along with an experienced Linux Programmer/facilitator (yours truly in
this case) are enrolled in a mailing list. As in Open Source projects,
a mailing list makes for convenient ways to seek help and to give
assistance.
If demand warrants the programmer/facilitator can be available for
scheduled online chat sessions.
This course is not free but is available for half price ($75) to all.
All iCanProgram courses offer a "don't pay a cent until Lesson#2
guarantee of satisfaction".
============
Introduction to Linux Programming
Prerequisites:
- A working Linux distribution already installed (or WinLinux 2000
under
Windows).
- A working knowledge of a Linux text editor (vi, emacs or any number
of
GUI based text editors)
- A copy of a C programming reference text. We don't require prior
knowledge of C programming nor will this be a C programming course. In
some of the lessons we will be producing some very basic simple C
programs
so a good reference book will come in handy.
Contents:
- preprocessor magic and header files
- exactly what is a Makefile
- how to version control text/source files with RCS
- how to parse command lines in C
- how to build a C filter program
- how to interact with a serial port in C
- introduction to IPC and tokenized message passing
To register simply fill in the online form at
http://www.icanprogram.com/registration_linux.html
If there is sufficient demand the next course will be starting May 14.

Subject: CoreLinux++ Abstract Framework Library Release 0.2.7
Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 22:59:23 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
General:
The CoreLinux++ Abstract Framework Library (libclfw++) is a meant to
facilitate the development of commonly used frameworks for C++
applications. It does this by building upon the CoreLinux++ base library
(libcorelinux++) and providing common classes and the abstractions of
frameworks for extension.
CoreLinux++ (http://corelinux.sourceforge.net) is an initiative to
normalize methods and conventions for OOA/OOD/C++ development for Linux,
materialized in documentation, OO analysis and design models, and a set
of Open Source C++ class libraries to support common patterns,
frameworks, and exploit the C++ standards.
News:
Schemas and Persistence
=======================
This release enables a very powerful framework abstraction: Persistence
The persistence abstraction is built on the premise that the actual
storage service code, that which implements concrete persist services
beneath the abstraction, should be intelligent enough to take guidance
from domain descriptions (concepts) defined in a schema that is
independent of the kind of storage service the application selects. Said
concepts define the types to be stored, in addition to other
information, and it is the job of the storage service to manage the data
layout and service execution as defined by it's implementation.
It is, after all, the 21st century.
This release contains the Schema and Concept modeling constructs and
services.

C Cross Referencing & Documenting tool. Version 1.5c - cxref
============================================================
Cxref is a program that will produce documentation (in LaTeX, HTML, RTF or SGML)
including cross-references from C program source code.
Works for ANSI C, including most gcc extensions.
The documentation for the program is produced from comments in the code that
are appropriately formatted. The cross referencing comes from the code itself
and requires no extra work.
The documentation is produced for each of the following:
Files - A comment that applies to the whole file.
Functions - A comment for the function, including a description of
each of the arguments and the return value.
Variables - A comment for each of a group of variables and/or
individual variables.
#include - A comment for each included file.
#define - A comment for each pre-processor symbol definition, and
for macro arguments.
Type definitions - A comment for each defined type and for each element of a
structure or union type.
Any or all of these comments can be present in suitable places in the
source code.
The cross referencing is performed for the following items
Files - The files that the current file is included in
(even when included via other files).
#includes - Files included in the current file.
- Files included by these files etc.
Variables - The location of the definition of external variables.
- The files that have visibility of global variables.
- The files / functions that use the variable.
Functions - The file that the function is prototyped in.
- The functions that the function calls.
- The functions that call the function.
- The files and functions that reference the function.
- The variables that are used in the function.
Each of these items is cross referenced in the output.
Includes extensive README and FAQ with details and examples on how to use the
program.

Subject: SATGUI Beta1 - GUI Development for Unix/Windows
Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 23:01:07 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
SATGUI Beta1 is now released and available from SATiSOFT.
SATGUI (A component of SAT - the Small Application Toolkit) is a
framework in which (Microsoft -or- X) Windows Client / Unix Server
applications can be developed.
Information and download from: www.satisoft.com/satgui
The SATiSOFT website has been updated with a "New Look" and contains
more examples of how to use the SAT components.
NEW AT BETA1:-
* Server Administration/Monitor/Control GUI.
* Toolbar support (With balloon help).
* Pop-up action confirmation dialog support.
* New inverse/bold/title/green/yellow options for addLabel.
* New green/yellow options for setMessage.
* Facility to pass specified column of MultiList as parameter.
* Connection failure tidied up.
* Bug fixes.
============(Small Application Toolkit)============
SAT is a collection of utilities intended to simplify the development
of small, multi-user, GUI based applications in a (Microsoft -or- X)
Windows Client / Unix Server environment.
There are many existing methods for creating this type of application;
Oracle/Forms, Ingres/OpenRoad, VisualBasic/ODBC, HTML/CGI etc, all of
which have their place, but for many small applications these can be
expensive/bloated/complex.
With this in mind SAT was developed using the following guidelines:-
*Small (single file) client.
*All Application code stored on server.
*Simple window layout language.
*Low network bandwidth requirements.
*Print "word processor" quality letters/reports.
*Schedule batch job sequences.
No PC/Windows development skills are required. Any programmer with a
reasonable grasp of Unix shell script can produce useful applications
with the minimum of fuss. Take a look at the demo application to see
just how easy SAT is!
SAT applications can be written in most Unix character based languages;
C, Shell script, Perl etc. To produce SQL based database applications
the SAT package includes a filter to simplify interfacing SAT with the
MySQL database system.
Although the SAT components are designed to work together, most of them
can be used stand-alone or incorporated into other applications.
All Unix components are implemented as scripts for easy portability.
Regards,
=Adrian=

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I have just released Phlib version 0.5.
Phlib is a group of C++ classes I have developed which I
find useful. It consists of the Parsing Stream Library
(Pstream) and the Set Of Small Integers Library (Setsi).
Pstream is similar to the standard stream library, and
facilitates writing lexical analysers and other programs
that parse data files.
Pstream also includes a string class that it is optimised
for removing characters from the start of the string and
appending new characters to the end of the string. For this
reason, it can be efficiently used as a FIFO buffer.
Setsi is an efficient implementation of a set of small
integers.
Version 0.5 is the initial open source release of Phlib.
Phlib is available from:
http://www.vision25.demon.co.uk/oss/phlib/intro.html
Phlib is licenced under the GNU LGPL.

Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 23:04:43 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
wayV (http://www.stressbunny.com/wayv) is a project to develop
experimental user interfaces and Open Source gesture and hand
writing recognition. This is achieved by allowing a user to draw
shapes with a pointing device (such as a mouse) to cause an
action to occur.
For example, one could draw an N anywhere on the desktop
and Netscape will start, or a C to make xcalc start, or a B to send
the b keypress to your window manager, etc.
This new version brings a host of improvements and additions
including:
- - gestures can now be associated with keypresses
- - a greater range of gesture input windows are now possible
- - direction-based gesture matching was implemented
- - user feedback regarding what action has been matched is now
provided
- - quick canceling of mismatched actions was implemented
- - various bug fixes
Good luck,
Mike

Subject: Zile 1.5 - Zile Is Lossy Emacs (Emacs clone)
Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 23:01:36 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Zile is another Emacs-clone. Zile is a customizable, self-documenting
real-time display editor. Zile was written to be similar as possible to
Emacs; every Emacs user should feel at home with Zile.
Zile features:
- Small but fast and powerful. It is very useful for footprint
installations (like on floppy disk) or quick editing sessions.
- 8-bit clean. Zile can operate with binary files.
- Looks like Emacs. Most Zile key sequences and function names
are identical to Emacs ones.
- Multi buffer editing w/multi level undo. Zile can open an
infinite number of files and can record an infinite sequence of
undo operations.
- Multi window. Zile can display multiple windows on the screen.
- Killing, yanking and registers. The typical killing, yanking and
register features of Emacs are available under Zile.
- Minibuffer completion. Zile can complete the user written text.
This is very useful for `M-x' commands and for selecting files.
- Colors. Zile makes use of the color capatibilities of the
terminal if available.
- Source highlighting ("C" and "C++" only for now). Zile can
highlight the "C" and "C++" source files for better reading.
- Auto fill. Zile automatically breaks the lines when they become
too wide (if the Auto Fill Mode is enabled).
Latest version can be found at the address:
http://zile.sourceforge.net/
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWS:
Changes between Zile 1.4 - Zile 1.5
* Added `switch-to-correlated-buffer' (bound to `F11').
* Added `skip-splash-screen' variable.
* Extented Mini Help functionality; now there are three help pages.
* Reorganized partially the `F1'..`F12' keys.
* Added a reference card (see `etc/refcard.tex' and `etc/refcard.ps').
* User-invisible changes: introduced three new general-purpose libraries:
- lib/alist.c Doubly-linked lists
- lib/astr.c Dynamically allocated strings
- lib/htable.c Hash table functions (was hash.c)
The new libraries are documented in their man pages (see lib/*.3).
Starting from this version, the internal structures will be rewritten
using these libraries. This will make the code easier to maintain,
and hopefully fixes some hidden bugs.
* Many bug fixes.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
SATFORM Beta1 is now released and available from SATiSOFT.
SATFORM (A component of SAT - the Small Application Toolkit) is a
forms processor which provides a facility to print "word processor"
quality letters/reports by merging a data source with a template
form. The output is suitable for HP LaserJet III (PCL), or later,

SATFORM uses an HTML style mark-up system (SAT/ML) to define document
template forms. As many people are familiar with HTML it was decided
to copy this style. Some of the tags function as they do in HTML,
but many have functionality specific to SAT/ML.
There is a companion utility, SATFILTER, which reads data from
standard input, and processes any SAT/ML tags and macros imbedded
in the data to produce the final (LaserJet PCL) formatted result.

The SATiSOFT website has been updated with a "New Look" and contains
more examples of how to use the SAT components.
NEW AT BETA1:-
* Status change to Beta1.
* Numeric right justify now supports numbers containing commas.
============(Small Application Toolkit)============
SAT is a collection of utilities intended to simplify the development
of small, multi-user, GUI based applications in a (Microsoft -or- X)
Windows Client / Unix Server environment.
There are many existing methods for creating this type of application;
SAT applications can be written in most Unix character based languages;
