Subject: shasm - 386+ assembler written in bash
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:35:13 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
You may have seen the shasm thread on slashdot...
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/02/15/046242&mode=thread
shasm is a 386+ assembler written entirely in Bash. No sed, no dd, Bash.
It's probably an easy port to (pd)ksh also.
I didn't jump into that thread because the shasm hit the / .fan about a
week before shasm could actually assemble a Linux ELF executable, so I was
scrambling to get it to that level and didn't have time to participate in
the reaction. shasm now can do static ELF binaries, and it can build my
Janet_Reno bootsector, which BTW can call AT BIOS interrupts from
protected mode. The most recent shasm, Janet_Reno, Viralinux_II, H3sm, my
Linux-ized Forths and other atrocities are usually in
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/install/clienux/interim
which is mirrored on ibiblio and possibly elsewhere. I also posted the
most recent shasm/Janet_Reno combination to alt.os.assembly on Usenet
recently. The cLIeNUX distro is the parent directory of the above ftp dir.
cLIeNUX is currently rather lagged from where I'd like it to be, but
1.4pre makes a cushy chroot jail in /cLIeNUX or whatever. Like the Forth
programming language, cLIeNUX is worth being aware of just BECAUSE it's so
different. cLIeNUX is still proudly libc5, for example, and that is not
the "lag" I mean. gcc 2.7.2.3, unfortunately, is. Forth turns up in funny
places. The runtime core of the Microsoft .NET thing has a Forth-like
parameter stack, for example.

Securing the Intranet
On Wednesday April 11 at 19h00, in room B-316.1 of Ecole Polytechnique de
Montreal, Jacques Gélinas, author of Linuxconf and several other widely
used free software packages, will present innovative Intranet security
tightening techniques. A simple firewall cannot anymore be considered a
sufficient security system, as attacks are equally likely to come from
the inside in several environments. This presentation discusses several
solutions to monitor server integrity and establish per user controls
for each service everywhere within the Intranet. The presentation will
be in French.
solution générique pour isoler chaque service.

Subject: WANTED: Linux web projects need volunteers
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:30:48 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am the webmaster of imaclinux.net, a free site dedicated to helping
people run Linux on the PowerPC platform. We have taken what we have
learned in running imaclinux.net and put together a series of new
websites designed to help introduce people to Linux as well as helping
those out who already run Linux.
Recently, we have lost a few key staff members to the "day job", and
we are hoping to find some new volunteers. Please take the time to
review what volunteers we need and our plans for our upcoming projects.
Who do we need?
================
1. Webmasters
2. System Admins
3. Producers/Editors
4. Content Contributors
5. Artists/Graphics Designers
Webmasters
===========
We really need webmasters who have a good grasp of PHP, MySQL and/or
Perl. We also need webmasters who have a good grasp of HTML 4, XML,
Java and Style Sheets. We need PHP/Perl/MySQL savvy webmasters to help
maintain and develop new backends and features. Our current PHP/MySQL
guru is swamped with work from his day job. Most of our backends
consist of small projects that come together quickly to help form an
easy to manage backend.
We need webmasters savvy with HTML, XML, and Style Sheets to help
refine the look and feel of our sites, and to maintain compatability
with the specifications and browsers.
System Admins
==============
We need some system admins to help add new features, refine our current
network setup and maintain security. Tasks might include deployment of
mailing list servers, refining our multihomed network environment and
testing security, along with regular system admin type work.
Producers/Editors
==================
Producers and Editors are responsible for what content makes it to the
live sites. Producers are responsible for coming up with new ideas for
segments on the site, and deploying them as projects. Producers are
also responsible for helping out with live events. Editors monitor and
approve postings made to the sites, post new content themselves and
edit content that might have typos, spelling mistakes or technically
misleading or incorrect.
Content Contributors
=====================
This can be anyone. Just visit the site, if you see vital news thats
not on our site, or you know how to do something under linux thats
not mentioned on our site, put it down in writing and submit it. The
more contributors we have, the better a Linux resource we will provide.
Artists/Graphic Designers
==========================
This final group of volunteers are vital. Whether you are a professional
or a struggling artist looking for projects for their portfolio, we'll
give you a chance. We need logos, icons, banners and images for regularly
updated content on several sites.
What are the sites?
====================
Okay, so you've seen who we are looking for, now lets have a look at
what we are working on, please note that ONLY the imaclinux.net site
is live, the other sites are still works in progress, which is why we
need your help.
LinuxPowerPC.org [main site for Linux on PPC]
- imaclinux.net [iMac specific information]
- ibooklinux.net [iBook specific information]
- powermaclinux.net [powermac specific information]
- powerbooklinux.net [powerbook specific information]
- cubelinux.net [cube specific information]
- rs6klinux.net [RS/6000 specific information]
Linuxcast.org
This site provides information on how to stream audio/video media
over the internet, how to view streamed media, how to capture
media, how to output media, how to receive audio/video broadcasts
(such as FM radio and TV), and features a database of Linux
compatible on-line video/audio sources.
Freelinuxtraining.org
This site takes someone from knowing nothing about computers and
helps them on their way to becoming a Linux guru.
linuxtrained.org
This site is for people who have completed the documentation in
freelinuxtraining.org, and provides a means to network with other
linux professionals as well as for employers to find resumes and
post linux jobs.
linuxdtp.org
This site is dedicated to doing all sorts of desktop publishing
under Linux, from scanning, printing to graphics artwork.
corruptfs.org
This site is for home to enterprise level users, featuring in-depth
information on filesystems, backup, network attached storage and
plenty of useful tips.
discardnetworks.org
This site provides a free forum for companies and end users looking
to dispose of old technology, to sell old technology at a very
low cost or trade their spare parts.
linuxpda.net
This site provides information on running Linux on small handheld
devices.
localbroadband.org
This site provides information on a country/city/state basis in
regards to broadband internet access. Featuring user provided
reviews of services, as well as guides to getting running under
Linux as well as pitfalls and ways to get around those annoying
"but you need windows to setup your service.." :)
migrate2linux.org
This site is provided as an add-on to freelinuxtraining, it is
for home to enterprise level users who are not quite convinced
to make the move to Linux, we'll tell you all the reasons why
you should move to Linux, as well as maybe some reasons why
you may not want to. The site will also provide plans and
strategies on how to migrate from a variety of different
operating systems to Linux, as well as many ways on how
using Linux can help save your company (or yourself) money.
contentswitching.org
This site is dedicated to more mid-enterprise level businesses.
It deals with the latest in internet content delivery, from
contentswitching to content distribution. How some of this can
be achieved with Linux, as well as strategies as to when its
best to migrate over to a dedicated hardware solution.
What is the status?
=====================
The good news is that we have about 50-75% of the content completed for
most of these sites, unfortunately, in many cases we do not have a
backend viable for end user use. Hopefully, this posting will help
gain some more skilled staff members who can help push these sites
closer to launch. Our goal is to launch all sites before the end of 2001.
Where is all this hosted?
==========================
After plenty of problems with sponsored hosting, free hosting and even
community hosting, I decided to finance hosting the sites in-house. The
sites are run from a series of Intel, PPC and Sparc based servers
on two multi-megabit connections. Bandwidth is our only cost, and
I currently foot the bill. The bill is sometimes paid by various
sponsors as they come along.
What do I get if I volunteer?
==============================
If you are nice enough to volunteer, we feel you should get something in
return for giving back to the community. We don't have a lot to offer but
here are some of the perks:
- - email accounts (pop3 and/or redirected)
- - shell accounts and/or VPN access
- - job referrals (two staff members have received new jobs as a result
of working on our staff)
- - job references (if you need a reference, we'll give you one)
- - experience (our setup is almost like a small ISP)
- - a chance to give back to the community
- - free web/dns hosting (yeah we'll let you host here too)
Things like email/shell access are immediate perks, some of our other
perks are provided after you've helped out a bit, we've had a few people
volunteer to get domains hosted and then not help out at all.
Upcoming Internet Projects
============================
In addition to our sites, we are also working on some upcoming unique
projects involving live events hosted over the internet. We've got
some interesting things in the works, so helping out will also get
you involved in some internet firsts..
Our motivation
===============
Our small staff are a group of IT professionals from developers to
admins, and some students. We all have the common goal of helping
people out by sharing what we know. Many people make poor IT
decisions (whether in the home or at the office) because they don't
have all the facts or fully understand all the information. We hope
to make Linux more accessible through easy to follow information.
This is something we've had great success with on imaclinux, and
we hope that with some help from volunteers, we can continue to do
so for all platforms.
And of course, its all FREE :)
If you would like to volunteer, or even just send your comments,
please email johnb@linuxcast.org.
Thanks
