Integrated Computer Solutions, Inc. (ICS - http://www.ics.com), is
making available a Developer's Release of its initiative to add themes
to Open Motif.

The Developer Release of Themes for Open Motif works with GTK themes
created for Gnome, the default desktop on Red Hat Linux. Currently,
themes are converted by hand into a format that Open Motif can process.
As the Open Motif Themes capability evolves, no conversion will be
necessary and Open Motif based applications will automatically adopt the
theme set by the end user. The objective of the initiative is to support
both the Gnome and KDE desktop environments. ICS is actively looking to
recruit other Open Source developers to help with this project.

The press release can be found at:
http://www.ics.com/forum/forum.php?forum_id=47
The home page for Themes for Open Motif is at:

Download: ftp://ftp.muppetlabs.com/pub/software/ELFKickers-2.0.tar.gz
Homepage: http://www.muppetlabs.com/~breadbox/software/elfkickers.html

ELF Kickers is a collection of programs that are generally
unrelated, except in that they all deal with the ELF file format.

* sstrip: a small utility that removes a few bytes from an executable
  that strip leaves behind.
* rebind: a small utility that alters the binding of selected symbols
  in an object file.
* elfls: a utility that displays an ELF file's program and/or section
header tables, which serve as a kind of global roadmap to the file's
  contents.
* elftoc: a program that takes an ELF file and generates C code that
defines a structure with the same memory image, using the structures
and preprocessor symbols defined in <elf.h>.
* ebfc: a compiler for a tiny programming language. The compiler can
generate ELF executables, object files, and shared libraries.
* tiny: a collection of tiny ELF executables (several under 256
  bytes).

The main purpose of these programs is to be illustrative and
educational -- to help fellow programmers understand the ELF file
format and something of how it works under the Linux platform.

Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:25:39 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Version 1.5 of the Market Analysis System (MAS) for Linux systems is
now available. MAS is a software application that provides tools for
stock charting and analysis.

MAS is released as free software. You can read more about MAS and
download it at:

http://eiffel-mas.sourceforge.net/

Screenshots for the MAS GUI can be found at:

http://ftp1.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/mas_screenshots.html

MAS 1.5 includes the following changes:

MAS executables are now available in RPM format:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/mas-1.5-1.i386.rpm

Server changes include:

Added capability to compress data when requested by the GUI client (via
an addition to the client/server protocol) to speed up data transfer over
a network.

Changed database access scheme to keep a database connection open during the
entire process's life and disconnect on exit. This noticeably speeds up
data access.

New operators: rounded value, square root, power.

GUI changes:

Added option to request data from the server to be compressed, and uncompress
the data in the client, using the server's new compression option. This
sometimes decreases wait time when obtaining new charting data, especially
over a slow network connection.

All month KLUG meetings will focus on Securing the Linux Environment.

Date : April 10, 2001
Presentation: Paranoid Penguin: Tips to Securing Linux
Presenter : Richard Zimmerman

Linux is a great operating system with a lot of potential. The strength
of Linux, however, can also be it's Achilles Heel. If you are new to
Linux (or Unix for that matter), then you definitely do not want to miss
this meeting. We will be looking at different aspects to securing your
Linux system against the evil empire of the Black Hat Hacker, port scans
& probes. We will be addressing firewall basics, patching software on
your system, performing an S-UID security audit, disabling unused
daemons, tightening security on running daemons, Intrusion Detection
Systems (IDS) and educating yourself to stay ahead of the evil hacker!

Richard Zimmerman is the Information Systems guru for K&B Transport in
Elkhart, Indiana where his duties include programming, network
administration, PC support & many other tasks for several offices.
Richard has been working with Linux both at home & work for the past
year. He even manages to find some spare time to share his Linux
learning experiences!

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University. Our
meetings are free and open to the public.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

HI everyone,

The next meeting of the Worcester (MA, USA) Linux Users' Group will take place
on Thursday, April 19th, at 7:00 PM. The meeting location is at WPI's Kinnicutt
Hall in Worcester, MA. Directions can be found on the WLUG website:

        http://www.wlug.org

The speaker at this meeting will be Bob Ziegler. Bob is the author of "Linux
Firewalls", published by New Riders. Bob will address firewall related topics
including:

o What is contained in the IP, TCP, and UDP packet headers
o A description of classic attacks
o Basic things to be filtered

The goal will be that someone should leave the meeting with an understanding of
what a firewall can do and why you want one. More meeting information can be
found on the WLUG website.

This promises to be a really informative meeting! As always, WLUG meetings are
open to the public. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for
Q/A, and then a couple of Linux related items will be raffled. Small donations
of $2 - $5 are happily accepted (but not required) to help defray the cost of
the refreshments at the meeting.

After the meeting, you are welcome to join us at the Boynton Restaurant for
pizza and beer.

I'm looking forward to seeing alot of people at this meeting.

See ya later,

Andy

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Leafwa is a web-based administration package for Leafnode
(Leafnode is a small Usenet news server, designed for "leaf
nodes" - sites that only exchange news with one other site).

Leafwa allows the user to view which newsgroups Leafnode is
reading news from, to manually subscribe to and unsubscribe
from newsgroups, and to view and edit the list of unsent
messages waiting to be uploaded to the remote news server.

With the advent of Leafnode 2.0, Leafwa also allows you to
maintain Leafnode's local newsgroups.

Changes from 0.5.0:
   * newsq.phtml and related pages no longer rely on DBM-style
     databases to work
   * User survey minor bug fixed
   * minor cosmetic changes

Dependencies:
Leafwa is a web-based program. It runs on Linux and other
Unix systems. Leafwa is mostly written in PHP; it requires
that you have PHP, Apache, and Leafnode already running on your
system (most Linux distros include these). Other dependencies
are Awk, the Bourne Shell and sudo. You also need a web browser,
   of course.

Licence: GNU GPL.

make, I'd like to hear it.

Subject: Signature collecting campaign for PlayStation2 Linux.
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:25:22 GMT
Reply-To: smitimko@ca2.so-net.ne.jp

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello everybody,

We are now doing a Signature-collecting campaign for PlayStation2 Linux.
Some of you know, this campaign began on March 4th, the 1st anniversary day
of PlayStation2 in Japan. The number of signature is over 5,000 now. We send
this list to SCEI when it reached 10,000. We need your help, because over 4,000
signatures were from Japan only.

   Please see the detail at:
        http://www.fakeroot.net/ps2linux/ English site.
        http://www.peanuts.gr.jp/pslinux/ Japanese site.

Briefly: the rumor (Linux can be run on PlayStation2!) was made by unknown
people few months ago. But last month, the situation was slightly changed.
Mr. Kutaragi, President of SCEI, was talking to our friend Mr.Ogoshi (very
famous guy in Japan with his nickname, Ogochan), and said that the quality
of Linux on PlayStation2 is ready to be a product. But he is also wondering that
users of Linux want to get it or support it. According to Ogochan, Mr.
Kutaragi wonders about it because it is not so profitable.

Anyway, we are thinking that SCEI wants to know how many people are
wanting and waiting the release of Linux on PlayStation2. I started
the web page with my friend (there was a mailing list talking about
the possibility of PS2 Linux). Japanese page is provided on my web
site, and English site is located in SourceForge.

The signatures we want is not limited which of Linux wizards or
nurds. We want them from all of the people who interested in it.

If Linux on PS2 will be available, many benefit will come to us and
SCEI. From the user's point of view, Linux for PS2 can provide CD and
DVD player by default, read e-mails and web sites on TV sets. For
developers and programmers, wide variety of games and applications
will be available, because of its world wide market share, very stable
and common hardware. For SCEI, it is very good chance to step up to be
a software company which provide the solution for home network. If it
will be released, it is not an over-estimation to think that it can be
a biggest Linux distribution.

So the signatures of all of those who will get the benefit of PS2
Linux are welcome. We need your support for this campaign.

Thank you for reading my bad English.

Regards,
  Shin MICHIMUKO <smitimko@ca2.so-net.ne.jp>

Hot off the press- the abstracts for our next session of Linuxatlax.org
Christopher Smith, (Linux and overall technical Guru, member of lula.org)
will be addressing us on two compelling subjects.

You don't want to miss this one. Please
check http://www.linuxatlax.org/meetings.html for any updates and other
information regarding our meetings.

Sat April 14th , from 10 am to 4 pm

Chris will be talking about two topics;

1) Wireless LAN's

This presentation will talk about the various Wireless networking
solutions in the market, but specifically focus on 802.11b wireless
networking, or Wi-Fi, which provides an 11mbps wireless LAN in a fairly
cost-effective manner. The presentation will include a demonstration of
the technology, and details on how to get your Linux box onto a Wi-Fi
network.

2) Processes, threads & tasks: working on the C10K problem

This presentation will talk about how Linux's multi-tasking works.
Multi-tasking is something we all take for granted, but most of us don't
know how Linux actually gets the job done. The presentation will start
out slow, defining terms like "process", "threads", "tasks" and
"signals" in the context of the Linux world. Depending on time and how
well the crowd is grasping the concepts, we'll move on to talking about
the good and the bad of the Linux approach to these concepts, and
strategies for programmers using these concepts in the real world to get
the best performance out of the available hardware.

Hope to see you there,

regards,

Ismet

at
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?P2M?P=W1P3FP&Z=1

For your edutainment, we hope to have the following talks on the day.

Martin Ling - "Wireless networking with Linux and the Consume.net
project"

Martin will provide an overview of wireless networking support in Linux,
and explain how one can use low cost hardware to join in a spreading,
decentralized and independent network being established through the
consume.net project. If you already have wireless hardware, feel free to
bring it
along and join in the fun.

John Hearns - "Computers Go to the Movies".

It is a general introduction to the work of our host FrameStore, a post
production movie house in Soho. He'll cover the equipment, computing
and
networking used for special effects and 3D animation work.

Richard Moore (IBM) - "Dynamic Probes"

Richard will tell us how to use IBM's DProbes with Opersys' Linux Trace
Toolkit to provide a universal (dynamic) tracing capability for Linux.
It is
universal because it provides a common tracing mechanism for all
executables whether in user or kernel space. It is dynamic because
tracepoints are
defined and applied dynamically to object modules as probepoints using
DProbes - no source code modification is required.

See
http://oss.software.ibm.com/developer/opensource/linux/projects/dprobes/
for a taster of things to come.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: GUI for driver development under Linux (WinDriver beta 5.00)
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:31:50 GMT
Reply-To: limors@jungo.com

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi All,

WinDriver / KernelDriver (driver development toolkits) now have a GUI
wizard for Linux and Solaris and Remote Access capabilities under all
supported operating systems (beta version 5.00).
A free 30 day evaluation download is available at:
www.jungo.com/dnload.html

Jungo's driver development tools offer hardware access and automatic
code generation. Until now, the GUI Wizard was available to Windows
users only.
Version 5.0 includes a multi platform Wizard, bringing the graphical
driver development environment to Linux and Solaris driver developers
as well.
The Remote Access capabilities enable developers to access hardware on
any remote target machine, including embedded systems, from a host
machine, via any network connection (LAN, WAN, Dialup etc.)
