Presentation: PHP & PostgreSQL
Presenter : Will Fitzgerald

PHP is an easy to use scripting language. PostgreSQL is a powerful
database program. They make a great combination for dynamic website
development. We'll walk through the creation of a website using PHP and
PostgreSQL.

Will Fitzgerald is the Chief Technology Officer of I/NET, Inc, a
Kalamazoo based software development firm. He spends too much time
micro managing web projects, when he should be building HAL 9000.

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Presentation: Slash
Presenter : Jamie McCarthy

"Slash" is a great way to run a news/discussion website. It is the
GPL'd perl code that powers Slashdot.org and over a hundred other
sites. Its version 2.0, (code named "Bender"), has been streamlined and
simplified. If you would like to see a demo of how Slashdot.org and
NewsForge.com are run behind-the-scenes, and ask questions about setting
up your own Slash site, come to this meeting.

Jamie McCarthy is a writer for Slashdot's "Your Rights Online" section,
and lead programmer at NewsForge.

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

We have just opened up our new site (developed by Linux enthusiasts in
the Ottawa, Canada area - also dubbed "Silicon Valley North" and the
"Linux Capital" of Canada). At any rate, we felt a need for a site
devoted to clearing the fog about the question: "Is linux ready for
"prime time" on the desktop". ie: Can Linux really be seen as a viable
alternative to Windows in a desktop environment (not server) and easily
be used by the "average" desktop user who needs a usable, user friendly
environment... tell us what you think at:

http://www.linuxnobis.com

Swing by and have a look.

We need good solid applications for the desktop to add to our site and
appreciate any feedback...

Thanks.

Dale.

From: David Coppit <david@coppit.org>
Subject: News Clipper 1.31 Open Source
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 20:30:03 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Description:
- - News Clipper allows web designers to automatically integrate dynamic
information from the Internet into their own web pages. It allows
individual users to create custom newspapers, or businesses to
enliven otherwise static web pages. Its tag language gives users
control of data acquisition, manipulation, and presentation, and can
be extended by writing new "handlers".

Release summary:
- - There have been a lot of improvements since the 1.28 release. The big ones
  are:
  - Debug and run logs are used instead of dumping errors and debug
information to the output. This resolves a security issue where
certain sensitive information in News Clipper commands may be
output as part of the error message.
  - If DBI and DBD::mysql are installed, News Clipper can use a direct
database connection to the handler server, which makes checking
for handler updates run 5 times faster.
  - Output can be emailed to users. (Great for HTML newsletters.)

Download:
- - You can now download NewsClipper 1.31 from CPAN:
  http://www.cpan.org/authors/id/D/DC/DCOPPIT/NewsClipper-1.31-OpenSource.tar.gz
- - Until the file propagates to the mirrors, you can use the following
  URL:
  http://download.sourceforge.net/NewsClipper/NewsClipper-1.31-OpenSource.tar.gz

New since version 1.28:
- - The Log::Agent and Log::Agent::Rotate packages are now required
- - Debug information is now sent to a log file determined by the debug_log_file
  configuration parameter.
- - Information about the execution of News Clipper is stored in the file
determined by the run_log_file configuration parameter.
- - Errors are now saved in the run log, which prevents private information
about the News Clipper commands from being printed in the HTML comments. (An
HTML message tells you to look in the log file.)
- - New "lprint" function can be used within handlers to print to the run log.
- - The new max_number_of_log_files and max_log_file_size configuration
parameters control the rotation of log files.
- - "tagText" configuration value allows users to set the comment keyword that
  indicates News Clipper commands
- - "makeOutputFilesExecutable" configuration value allows users to set whether
or not the output files should be made executable
- - ConvertConfig.pl now saves updated config files even if a .bak file already
exists. New backups are saved as .bak2, .bak3. etc.
- - The amount of time to hold a lock and the amount of time to wait for a lock
are now based on the scriptTimeout value.
- - Updated Makefile.PL to use Win32::TieRegistry instead of older
  Win32::Registry.
- - Makefile.PL now determines old installation directory for single-user
  installations.
- - Fixed a use of unitialized value warning in HandlerFactory.pm.
- - Standardized config options to use_this_style instead of thisStyle or
  thisstyle.
- - Fixed a bug in detection of incompatible configuration file.
- - Removed cacheimages option processing code from NewsClipper.pl, and put it
  in the cacheimages handler.
- - Added DBI and DBD::mysql module requirements to Makefile.PL. (Forgot to add
  them in version 1.28)
- - "Server is down" warning is now shown only once for each run.
- - Fixed a bugs in handler server connect timeouts and retries.
- - -C now also gives the option to clear the debug and run logs.
- - Direct database connections are now used only if DBI and DBD::mysql are
available. Otherwise, the older (and slower) web-based connections are used.
- - Fixed unhelpful warning when invalid handler names are used.
- - Added support for emailing output files
- - Mail::Sendmail is now required if you use the email feature.

Regards,
David

eXtrans 1.1.1 released (GPL license)

The eXtrans software allows you to easily translate XML documents into any
other format or representation: it may be HTML, XML,
LateX, pictures, sound,... or anything else the python language can
manipulate.

Those translations are driven by abstract translators (xtrans scripts)
embedding python code. Translators are very easy to write, since all
the complicated details of XML parsing, reference resolving, file
management and even python programming are handled by the underlying
system in a way transparent to the user.

This distribution includes GimpClient, a python module for communicating
with Gimp. Through this module, your xtrans scripts have
access to a powerful graphic factory in an efficient manner.

Leafwa is a web-based administration package for Leafnode
(Leafnode is a small Usenet news server, designed for "leaf
nodes" - sites that only exchange news with one other site).

Leafwa allows the user to view which newsgroups Leafnode is
reading news from, to manually subscribe to and unsubscribe
from newsgroups, and to view and edit the list of unsent
messages waiting to be uploaded to the remote news server.

With the advent of Leafnode 2.0, Leafwa also allows you to
maintain Leafnode's local newsgroups.

New features in 0.5.0:

   * ability to view, create, and delete local newsgroups

Leafwa is available from:

Greetings:

As of February 5 2001 the Linux Music & Sound Applications pages have
been updated. This site contains more than 800 links to Linux audio,
MIDI, and DSP sites, making it the most comprehensive listing of its
kind on the Internet.

The site may be reached here:

      http://sound.condorow.net (USA)

  Here:

      http://www.linuxsound.at (Europe)

  Here:

      http://www.ymo.org/linuxsound/ (Japan)

  And at the original URL:

      http://www.bright.net/~dlphilp/linuxsound/ (USA)

Please use the mirrors before using the Bright.net site, my ISP
imposes a daily transfer limit.

Best regards,

Issue #24 of Georg's Brave GNU World,
the monthly GNU forum has been released.
                                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

Issue #24 of the column is now online and it can - as usual - be found
on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors. Otherwise just follow the links at
the end of this posting.

Georg's Brave GNU World is a monthly column which is being released
simultaneously in six languages (English, German, French, Japanese,
Spanish and Korean) on the web and printed in the German
"Linux-Magazin" as well as the "Linux Magazine" U.K. and the "Linux
Magazine France." This makes it the monthly column with the widest
distribution worldwide (afaik).

If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 2
mails a month).

The 24th issue covers the following topics:

 * GNU Paint ( an nice and simple paint program for GNOME )

 * Gnatsweb             ( making bug-tracking easy )

 * Fcron                ( a very powerful cron alternative )

 * Euklides             ( Euclidian geometry )

 * Etach                ( attachments with EMACS )

 * GNU Serveez          ( a powerful server framework )

 * GNU Enterprise ( bringing GNU into business )

 * 2 years Brave GNU World ( the two year anniversary of the BGW )

This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"

This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so donīt hesitate to contact me if your project is under a Free
Software license and youīd like to see it introduced here.
