Subject: sysstat-3.3.5 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 21:46:15 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everybody,

Sysstat release 3.3.5 in now available on sunsite/metalab server:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/
80kB sysstat-3.3.5.tar.gz
82kB sysstat-3.3.5-1.src.rpm
64kB sysstat-3.3.5-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

There are two interesting things coming with sysstat-3.3.5:
1) The iostat command has been greatly improved and now takes full
advantage of Stephen Tweedie's kernel patch to display extended I/O
statistics.
2) Sysstat now includes a new command ("isag", for Interactive System
Activity Graph) that enables you to graphically plot data stored in a
daily data file by a previous sar run (contributed by David Doubrava
<linux_monitor@volny.cz>).

Please note that version 3.3.5 is a development release. The latest
stable version is still 3.2.4.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

Changes vs 3.3.4 are:
2001/02/11: Version 3.3.5
* iostat command improved. Take now full advantage of Stephen Tweedie's
I/O accounting patch to display extended statistics (option -x).
* The default value for the count parameter of the sar command is now 1
(this is how sar works with other Un*xes...). A value of 0 will indicate
that reports are to be generated continuously.
* Code cleaned: now always use 'double' numbers instead of the INT_PART,
INT_VAL, DEC_PART and DEC_VAL macros.
* Don't assume that jiffies are 100ths of a second. Use Linux HZ
definition instead.
* NLS updated (small fix).
* sar and iostat manual pages updated.
* isag (Interactive System Activity Graph) command added.

I'll just have to improve the next update enough to overmatch it <g>.

From: Chris Lowth <chris@lowth.com>
Subject: protector - 1.00.1 -- GPLed e-mail virus protection
Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 21:53:21 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

Update 1 of protector 1.00 has been released for RedHat 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 and 7.0
systems.

This update plugs the hole in the 1.00 version that allowed the recent
"VBS/OnTheFly" virus (AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs) through.

Version 1.01 will also be released shortly. This reworked protector
release handles MS office and other document formats more intellegently -
including the checking of embedded objects - so watch this space.

For information and download, visit: http://www.lowth.com/protector

Protector checks incoming e-mail messages for attachments that could
contain viruses, worms etc - and replaces the offending attachments with
standard warning messages before being passed to "procmail" for local
delivery. The original "dangerous" attachment is saved in a directory that
only the root user can access.

Protector is NOT a virus scanner in the traditional sense: It does NOT
scan attachments for virus signatures, but blocks attachments that could
contain viruses. So *.exe, *.vba etc attachments don't get through.
This means that you don't have to keep protector up to date to stay
protected against the growing tide of new viruses and worms.

Protector does not work by blocking listed types, but by blocking ALL BUT
the listed types. For details of the attachment types "allowed through",
please refer to the web site.

The logic employed by protector to determine the file types contained in
attachments is based on a modified version of the "file" command, and a
number of type-specific validation programs - it does not rely on the
actual name of the file, or the "content-type" declared in the attachment
header. It also looks inside ZIP, TAR and other archive formats, and
checks the files contained in them.

Some types of files are allowed through only under certain conditions. The
main example being that MS Word documents are blocked if they contain ANY
macros, but allowed through otherwise.

It isn't perfect yet, but it's a start. Assistance in developing the
checking logic for new file types is invited.

Chris.

Update of the gpart partition guessing tool. Changes since version 0.1g:

 - New support for the following filesystems: BeOS, QNX 4.x & SGI XFS.
 - Updated Reiser filesystem support (Francis Devereux <francis@devereux.tc>).
 - Updated LVM support.
 - Several small fixes from contributors.

I'd be glad if people with either BeFS or XFS on their disks give it a try
even if they don't have any problems with their partition table, because
both supports were only tested with a single filesystem. Please give some
feedback if it doesn't work as expected.
