Subject: cc65 - a C compiler for 6502 based systems
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 14:21:13 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'm proud to announce version 2.6 of CC65, a C crosscompiler /
crossassembler combo for 6502 systems.
CC65 has C and runtime library support for many of the old 6502 machines,
including
- The Commodore C64, C128 and the C16, C116, Plus/4 machines.
- The CBM 600/700 family (programs run in bank 1).
- Newer PET machines (not 2001)
- The Apple ][ (library support by Kevin Ruland <kevin@rodin.wustl.edu>)
- The Atari 8 bit machines (thanks to the Atari team)
- GEOS for the C64 and C128 (GEOSLib by Maciej Witkowiak <ytm@elysium.pl>)
The libraries are fairly portable, so creating a version for other 6502s
shouldn't be too much work.
New in this version:
* All bugs mentioned on the bugs web page for version 2.5 are fixed.
* Several new commands/features for the assembler, including a repeat
statement and target specific character sets.
* More 65C02 support.
* Module constructors/destructors (assembler/linker).
* `const' is honored in most places now, `const' data goes into the RODATA
segment by default.
* Lots of larger library routines rewritten in assembler for speed and size
(heap management, printf family).
* New object dump utility.
* New disassembler and assembler --> HTML converter (beta!).
* New low level disk I/O module for the Atari, thanks to Christian
Groessler, <cpg@aladdin.de>.
* New mouse routines for the Atari machines by Christian Groessler and
Freddy Offenga, <F.Offenga@student.kun.nl>. The mouse routines for the
C64 are now debugged and should work (but still beta).
* Other stuff.
There is still no support for the following features:
* Floats and bit fields.
* File routines on most systems. The 8 bit Ataris are the first
machines that do have full file I/O support (besides the ACE port
which was dropped some time ago). Please note that the complete CBM
family doesn't have file I/O support!
* The 80 column mode on the C128 is not supported by the conio library.
Available packages:
As usual I will provide the complete sources and several binary packages,
including RPMs for RedHat Linux. Linux is the primary development platform,
so the sources do compile out of the box on Linux machines.
Please note that there are now separate RPMs for the compiler proper and
the target specific libraries. To develop for one of the predefined target
systems you need the compiler RPM package *and* one of the target machine
packages.
Binaries for DOS and and Windows will follow or may already be available at
the time you read this. OS/2 packages will again be available, but since
there are almost no downloads for OS/2, so the host platform may get
dropped in the near future (again).
Download:
More information information and a download link, please visit the cc65 web
page at
http://www.cc65.org/
Thanks to all who sent feedback and suggestions and of course to anyone who
helped developing cc65!

Subject: COMMERCIAL: PMfax for Linux is Released
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 14:40:56 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The Linux desktop now has a full-featured fax and voice messaging
application. PMfax for Linux has been released and is immediately
available at www.pmfax.com. This product fills a hole in the Linux
desktop and provides other Linux applications with "print and fax"
capabilities.
PMfax for Linux runs on all popular Linux distributions including Red
Hat, Caldera, Corel, SuSE, TurboLinux, Mandrake, Peanut and others. The
free PMfax Lite product supports fax sending and receiving with fax
modems, and it also provides the features of a simple voice answering
machine if your modem supports voice commands.
Because it uses your own modem and telephone line, sending a fax is free
for local calls and costs you only your normal long distance rate for
toll calls. PMfax Lite does not limit the size or number of faxes, and
the program does not require you to register or purchase after an
evaluation period. Expect to see PMfax Lite becoming an integral part of
most Linux distributions and desktops.
For those who send or receive faxes more frequently, the PMfax Pro
product ($99) adds useful features including complete fax editing,
automatic receiving and printing, background send/receive while logged
out, enhanced scripts for remote fax/voice retrieval and mailboxes,
multiple phone books and distribution lists, and much more. Options to
support multiple lines are also available. You can start with the free
PMfax Lite product to test with your hardware, then convert to the PMfax
Pro product at any time by purchasing a serial number.
Keller Group was founded in 1990. FaxWorks OS/2 and PMfax products are
the best selling OS/2 fax software products, and FaxWorks Lite was
licensed by IBM for OS/2 Warp/3 and Warp/4. Keller's fax products are
known for their reliability and are widely used for multiline
broadcasting, LAN faxing, fax-on-demand and other applications.

Subject: Heroes 0.8 - like the Tron or Nibbles game of yore, just better.
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 14:44:42 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce the release of Heroes 0.8.
Heroes is similar to the "Tron" and "Nibbles" games of yore, but
includes many graphical improvements and new game features.
In it, you must maneuver a small vehicle around a world and collect
powerups while avoiding obstacles, your opponents' trails, and even
your own trail.
There are five game modes available. Quest is the classical
Nibbles, in Death Match you start with very long tails a must kill your
opponents, in Kill'em All you must run over lemmings moving on the
ground, in Time Cash or Color modes you must collect money or pyramids
of color. Heroes features 12 original sound tracks, 94 levels (in 10
different tile sets) plus a level editor.
You are invited to visit the following links:
home page: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/
screenshots: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html
download: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/download.html
(Note: this is a source code release, the `download' page also list
binary packages but they might not be up to date yet.)
NEWS in this version include:
- fixes for critical bug in heroes (segfault and stalls during the game)
- help reader rewritten
- --quadruple option
See the NEWS file for details, there have been a lot of changes not
worth to list here.
HELP! Heroes development is open to anyone and we welcome any
contribution. In the hypothetical case you would like to spend some
time on the source code and don't know what to do, please, ask the
mailing list: there is presently some tasks that are needed and do
not require to understand the full source tree at first.

Subject: Cactus 4.0 Beta 9 - solving systems of partial differential equations
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 14:47:46 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi,
this is to announce the release of beta 7 of Cactus 4.0.
Cactus is a general, modular, parallel code for solving systems of partial
differential equations. The code has been developmented over many years by
a large international collaboration of numerical relativity and
computational science research groups and can be used to provide a
portable platform for solving any system of partial differential
equations. The code compiles and runs on a variety of different
platforms, from laptops running Linux or NT to clusters of workstations,
to large T3Es, with no modifications needing to be made to the application
codes.
As an example, one set of modules (thorns) can be used to solve problems
in numerical relativity, for example black hole or neutron star
collisions. The design of the code and the thorns means that general
routines can be written, for example to locate the position of the event
horizon, which can then be made generally available and used for other
problems.
The code is available from
http://www.cactuscode.org
Notes for this release can be found at
http://www.cactuscode.org/Development/beta10.txt
For further information, email
cactusmaint@cactuscode.org
Have fun,
Tom

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'd like to announce a new version of MemoNews. It's at:
http://www.ee.usyd.edu.au/~hutton
MemoNews is a perl program that gathers nntp news (what you're now
reading), threads the articles alphabetically, and packs them into the
MemoPad for offline reading/replying. It can handle multiple newsgroups,
posting, and has automatic expiration of articles. It was written under
Linux but seems to work with other unixes just as well.
Changes from 1.0:
MemoNews is now much better at replies as it now has a simple quotation
system in place.
The threading mechanism has also been improved.
Changes from 1.1:
MemoNews now supports a sigfile and automatic reply address
configuration. This makes posting a bit simpler.
Changes from 1.2:
Sorting out Re's, Sv's, Vs's on the subject line has been improved.
Quoting in replies is now easier and by default the entire message is
quoted.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
FlightGear version 0.7.6 is now available for download. The
FlightGear Flight Simulator project is a free, open-source flight
simulator project. Source code for the entire project is available
and licensed under the GPL.
There is a new 0.7.6 version of the base package that corresponds with
this new release. We also have a complete rebuild of the world
scenery in progress (which now includes our global land use / land
cover database.) Everyone that upgrades to 0.7.6 or wants to use this
new scenery will need to have the 0.7.6 base package as well.
If you want to compile FlightGear-0.7.6 from source, you will also
need to first download and install plib-1.2.0 and SimGear-0.0.14.
Plib is available from "http://plib.sourceforge.net". SimGear is
available from "http://www.simgear.org".
For more information on this project, please visit the Flight Gear web
page at:
http://www.flightgear.org
Version 0.7.6 includes some exciting new features. We now have high
resolution runway textures with accurate markings. Basic ground
lighting has been implemented with lights concentrated in urban and
built up areas. Quite a bit of work has been done on the instrument
panel infrastructure and we can now support "shaped" panels and
scrollable "virtual" panels that are larger than the screen. We've
added support for waypoint following to the autopilot. We've added a
basic piston engine model and have modeled rpm, egt, cht, mp, and
mixture. Aside from these more obvious changes, we've also done a ton
of work behind the scenes developing and updating the infrastructure
of this project, fixing bugs, and building better support for the
major compilers and environments available today. Please see the
FlightGear web site for a more detailed list of changes.

In addition, there are some other new and - hopefully - unique
improvements:
- - New, and very cool GPL'd penguin logos by Freddy Contreras.
- - A page of HTTP links to other Linux, Unix, and Internet related sites.
- - A Unix lifesaving tips page, which contains Unix arcana that can
help save your backend in emergency situations.
- - Lots of great Perl/Tk software.
Your feedback and contributions - of answers - are always welcome.
You'll get credit for your answers, and that can lead to fame, fortune

MEETING NOTICE
==============
Central Ohio Linux Users Group
Saturday, December 30th., 13:00 to 15:00 local
Meeting Presentation
====================
Last meeting of the Millenium
The main presentation: -- Meta Shell Scripting Musings
Our own Phil Hunter will present a philospohical
overview on 'better practices', 'basic principles', and 'favorite
primitives and constructs' of shell scripting. Review Chapter 9
at http://wks.uts.ohio-state.edu/unix_course/intro-1.html
for some flesh to go with these tasty tidbits. We'll be 'eating
a HIPO', and 'baking oatmeal cookies' in the presentation. See:
http://www.vicksburg.com/~computer/Jan21.Program.html#Tools
And then -- Upgrades demo
Additionally, the host 'www.colug.net' which provides the
group's webpages will be upgraded from RH 6.0 to RH 7.0 at the
meeting. This should be interesting, for the MySQL and GD packages
are rather customized, and we can anticipate breaking part of the
site. Fixing it will be fun. Bring any spare pair of 64M DIMM
sticks to donate -- the server has only 32M total presently.
Goodies
Jim Prior has a whole bag of swag -- we'll write a shuffle CGI
routine as part of the main presentation to divvy the loot.
Stump the Chump^h^h^h^h^hExpert
Always popular --- bring in that problem box, and it will
probably go home fixed.
As always, and given the informal nature of the group's
`management' and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules,
the agenda and content are subject to change.
Additionally, the _formal_ meeting ends at the stated time.
We've noticed that folks continue to stand around in the parking lot
for _hours_. We should probably adjourn to a local watering hole,
to slake thirst and sit down.
MEETING SITE:
=============
This month's meeting will be held a local hotel just north of
the former meeting site. We are being sponsored in November and
December by Collective Technologies (http://colltech.com/).
The meeting will be held at the Clarion Inn -- 7007 North High
Street, Worthington, OH -- Link of the web page.
.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday
of a month, alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh
their schedules with COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend
on facility availabity, with common-sense relocation in the
holiday season.
The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting
site. See: http://www.colug.net/meetings.php3
Meeting Schedule
================
The NEXT meeting is scheduled on Saturday, January 27,
2001 from 13:00 to 15:00 local -- Location is presently unknown.
Exciting advance notice: Paul Everitt of Digital
Creations ( publishers of ZOPE ) may well be speaking at our February
2001 meeting in a joint meeting with the COZUG. Paul's pitch page
is at: http://www.digicool.com/paul/ and a statement to the Open
Source community ( http://lwn.net/2000/0601/a/zope-perl-paul.html )
says in part: "I love Python and Linux." We need to advertise this
exciting event lots ...
