Linux-Québec
============
Rencontre technique mensuelle
=============================
Web : http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html

<URL:http://www.fcsq.qc.ca/services/ordinateurs.html>
<URL:http://www.rescol.ca/cfs-ope/welcome_f.html>

Monthly Technical Meeting
=========================
Subject: Diskless GNU/Linux Computers in a School Setting
When: Wednesday November 8, 2000 at 19:00 (20001108T1900)
Where: Garneau Elementary School; 1808 Papineau, Montréal
Web: http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html
Several people who have installed or used GNU/Linux networks (composed
of a server and several diskless workstations) in a school setting
will expose and share their experience. This meeting targets mainly
teachers, technicians, managers, parents, and other parties interested
in computing in a school setting.
This approach to organizing computing resources features a low cost
for client computers (especially when recycled computers from the
Québec School Boards Federation's ``Computers for Schools'' program
are used) and it only requires minimum maintenance. Such
installations are increasingly being deployed this year. Experience
acquired at the instructional level (applications), at the performance
level (cost, speed, and stability), and at the installation level will
be exposed. The following people will be present:
-- Françoise Maertens, teacher at Garneau School
(100 computers and 5 GNU/Linux servers),
-- Réal Gingras, teacher at Félix-Leclerc School
(20 GNU/Linux computers), as well as
-- Jacques Gélinas, Joël Pomerleau, Daniel Shane, and Michel
Dagenais who have installed such GNU/Linux networks in several
schools.

<URL:http://www.fcsq.qc.ca/services/ordinateurs.html>
<URL:http://www.schoolnet.ca/cfs-ope/welcome_e.html>
Please note that this meeting is not held at the usual venue. Garneau
Elementary School is located at 1808 Papineau Street (south of
Ontario) in Montréal (Papineau subway station, with parking on
Lafontaine, Champlain, east side of Papineau, and south side of
Ontario). The meeting will be held in the library. Garneau School is
visible on this map (top left):
<URL:http://www.stcum.qc.ca/metro/images/c28.gif>
Linux-Québec's monthly technical meetings are free and open to all.
They are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month, except
in July and August. They are an opportunity to discuss the latest
news in the Linux world, establish contacts, and listen to a technical
presentation on a Linux and free software (free as in free speech)
related subject. They are often held at École Polytechnique de Montréal.
