FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- FRI SEP 29 16:50:10 EST 2000 CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA
After thousands of man years of advanced Computer Science research and
Best Practice Software Engineering Methodology, the Apt Proxy World
Domination Team have taken Apt Proxy 0.4, a 200-line shell script
which proxies apt-get connections for small networks, and converted it
into... well, a 650-line shell script that does basically the same
thing, and slapped a 1.0.0 label on it.
Apt-proxy is an intelligent cache for apt-get traffic, reducing the
load on mirrors and speeding up updates for slow clients, especially
reducing bandwidth required to transfer Packages files.
New features include:
1) Streaming of incoming files: no more apt-get timeouts.
2) Multiple backends for different URLs: you can proxy many different
servers.
3) Complete symlink handling: symlinks are faithfully copied and
followed from the servers.
4) Fallback on servers: servers to use if the main one fails.
5) Better error messages back to apt-get user.
6) Automatic cleaning of entire cache and individual .deb files.
7) Partial updates, to save aborted bandwidth.
8) Manual pages for configuration and usage.
Apt Proxy World Domination Team.

Subject: Tailmerging for Ext2 - Initial announcement
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 20:04:22 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Tailmerging is a technique that helps save space on a filesystem with
large blocks and many small files. Tailmerging for Ext2 is an
experimental extension for Ext2 that packs together tail blocks of
several files into a shared block. Up to now, Ext2 did not have any way
of using the wasted space in the last block of a file, though Ext2
always had hooks for an implementation of BSD-style file fragments.
Tailmerging is nothing like BSD fragments: it uses space more
efficiently, it is more simple to implement, and it probably runs
faster. (We shall see.)
Without tailmerging it is possible to waste more than 99.9% of the space
on an Ext2 partition. With tailmerging this worst case improves to 50%
wastage. The average case improves by up to 30% depending on the kind
of files you store. Blocks saved are blocks that don't have to be
read/written: disk I/O speed should improve as well.
The current version can:
- Do a full merge on mount of all files on a partition
- Do a full unmerge on mount of all files on a partition
- Show a list of tailmerged files on a partition
- Tell you non-invasively how much tailmerging would save
- Support normal I/O on a tailmerged filesystem
The current version can *not*:
- Do incremental merging. Your filesystem will slowly expand again.
- Support multiple threads. One I/O operation at a time, please.
But at least it doesn't:
- Crash a lot
- Or modify normal partitions, unless you tell it to.
*** This code is experimental ***
Did I say this code is experimental? Get this code if you are a
programmer who is interested in hacking Ext2 or wants to know more about
the VFS. This code does something significant while being small and
quite understandable. It is a good and easy introduction to kernel
programming.
There is work to do. The code has to be made thread-safe and an
incremental merging algorithm has to be designed and implemented. You
are welcome to jump in and help.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tridia Corporation's First Commercially Supported Release of Open Source
Virtual Network Computing Software Views and Controls Linux Consoles
TridiaVNC Release 2.0's Linux Viewer and Control Features Make Linux Servers
Remotely Manageable From Anywhere on the Network
ATLANTA =BE September 25, 2000---Tridia Corporation, a provider of
eSupport tools that facilitate interactive support and remote system
administration today launched Release 2.0 of the company's newest
product offering, TridiaVNC( (virtual network computing) the first
commercially supported release of open-source, virtual network computing
software that views and controls Linux consoles. TridiaVNC Release 2.0
will be available by the end of the year. A prerelease binary (e.g.,
beta) will be available by Sept 26 on www.tridiavnc.com. The source code
will also be available to the public from www.developvnc.org.
This is a breakthrough for the Linux community since many administrative
tasks under Linux can only take place if you are physically at the
console. Release 2.0 of TridiaVNC removes this burden. You can now
remotely control the Linux server from anywhere on the network,
including via the Internet. As Linux becomes more accepted on the
desktop (instead of just on the server) remote viewing and control
functionality will be critical for user support and training.
"One of the big drawbacks to Linux remote control was that you COULD NOT
take control of the console (the screen, keyboard and mouse connected to
the actual server)," says Vince Frese, chief executive officer of Tridia
Corporation. "This lack of direct control has been a disappointment to
many Linux users. They know they are able to do it under Microsoft
Windows, yet they can't do it under Linux. With Release 2.0 of TridiaVNC
they can remotely view and control Linux servers anywhere on the
network."
With TridiaVNC, a session is started on a Linux console that monitors
screen, keyboard, and mouse inputs and output. The I/Os are then
converted to the VNC protocol. ANY TridiaVNC user can then use their
TridiaVNC viewer to connect to the Linux server and view/control the
console. Since TridiaVNC is cross platform, you can view/control the
Linux console from a variety of environments including Windows, Linux,
UNIX, and Mac.
"The core of this technology was contributed by a German company named
Hexonet," says Frese. "Because TridiaVNC is open source these types of
contributions are made possible. Our taking an open source contribution
and incorporating it into TridiaVNC underscores the power of the open
source movement and Tridia's role as integrator/aggregator of open
source technology."
Unlike proprietary remote control products, TridiaVNC provides
cross-platform support functionality from a single open source product.
This Open Source model gives users the freedom to customize, integrate
and enhance TridiaVNC to meet their specific needs. Its small footprint
is another advantage. The Win32 viewer is about 184K in size. In
addition, VNC uses minimal resources when not in use. And, since
TridiaVNC requires no license fee, it is a cost effective choice for
enterprisewide deployment.
