Subject: Linux release of Popular Power distributed computing software
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 17:35:13 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Popular Power is a company building a distributed computing platform.
We've just released a Linux version of our Popular Power Worker
software, so the Linux community can now participate in our network.
Start donating your spare cycles to our non-profit projects today, and
get ahead in line for paying projects!
The download is available at http://www.popularpower.com/
Our software works in the background, activating when you are not
using your computer and getting in touch with our site. We give you a
small part of a large computing task, like finding a new treatment for
a disease, rendering computer graphics, or analyzing complex data.
Your computer works on the task and then returns the results to us.
When you need your computer our software stops working, allowing you
full use of your computer.

LINUX VERSION OF FIRST COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTED
COMPUTING SOFTWARE NOW AVAILABLE
- -- Popular Power Delivers Client in Most-Requested Format --
SAN FRANCISCO, July 7, 2000 - Popular Power, the first company to
launch commercial distributed computing software, today announced a
preview release of its client software for Linux. Linux users can now
download the Popular Power software, which has been harnessing the
surplus processing power of Internet-connected PCs since the Windows
client became available in April. Participants donate their unused
computing resources to important research projects and will soon have
the option of selling that time to companies with large-scale
computing needs.
Once downloaded from www.popularpower.com, the Popular Power software
operates in the background of Linux machines. When a PC is idle or has
spare processing power, the program gets a small piece of a large
computing task from the Popular Power server and returns results when
complete. Popular Power's general-purpose commercial software differs
from that of earlier, non-commercial efforts in its ability to execute
different types of jobs, as opposed to single functions.
"Linux users fueled a number of early distributed computing efforts,
helping the field advance to where it is today," said Nelson Minar,
chief technology officer and co-founder of Popular Power. "Strong
feedback from our Web site, coupled with a petition on the popular
community site freshmeat.net, made Linux the most requested new system
for us to support."
The company plans to make an open source release of its client
software available early next year, as well as source code for some of
the non-profit applications running on the system. "Linux developers
and users have long understood the power of distributing work across a
network, and working together to solve problems," commented Brian
Behlendorf, chief technology officer of Collab.net and a Popular Power
investor. "It's great to see Popular Power now available to this
community."
Popular Power's first project, currently running on participants' PCs,
is a non-profit research application that uses computer modeling to
help better understand and improve influenza vaccines. This
application allows participants to donate their time to a meaningful
research project, while demonstrating the viability of the system for
biomedical applications. Other types of jobs well suited to the
Popular Power platform include financial simulations, computer
graphics rendering and distributed network applications.
On its Web site, the company has created a documentation page
detailing the output of the Popular Power client so that Linux
programmers can create their own user interfaces. Planned features for
future Linux releases include screensavers and interfaces such as
WindowMaker dockapps and GNOME applets.
In other news, Popular Power announced that it has added proxy support
as a new feature in its Windows and Linux clients. Now all Popular
Power participants can enable the software to run behind firewalls.
The Popular Power runner and computing platform is written in Java,
providing a security sandbox that protects participants' computers and
files.
Headquartered in San Francisco, Popular Power (www.popularpower.com)
launched the first commercial distributed computing software in April
2000. The privately held company is funded by a group of angel
investors including: Brian Behlendorf, CTO and founder of Collab.net
and president of the Apache Software Foundation; Max Metral, CTO of
PeoplePC; Jolly Chen, CEO of Chen Capital LLC and one of the
Postgres95 database authors; Michael Smith, CTO, and Maurice Werdegar,
VP and investment strategist, both of MetaMarkets.com; Sam Pullara,
Dave Brown and Adam Messinger of BEA WebLogic (NASDAQ:BEAS); and Peter
Seibel, technical director of Kenamea.

Xi Graphics releases new 3D Linux Graphics Drivers for Laptops
The Denver based company has extended its OpenGL Compliant 3D Linux
Graphics Drivers (LGDs) product line to include new laptop models that
have 3D-capable graphics hardware.
In January, Xi Graphics announced a new web-based product line of 3D
graphics hardware drivers for desktop Linux. The initial laptop driver
release includes three models from two manufacturer's: the ToshibaTecra
8100, the Toshiba Satellite Pro 4260 and the IBM ThinkPad A20p.
Xi Graphics prefers to have at lease 32 MB of graphics memory to run 3D
on Linux, although some 3D programs have acceptable performance with
only 16 MB. The 3D LGDs also have great 2D performance, primarily
because of the 3D Accelerated-X Display Server's new architecture.
The price of the driver for the IBM ThinkPad is $119; the other two are
$129 each.
Demos can be run on the customer's hardware before purchasing. Then
customers use a registration system at www.xig.com to purchase a key.
The key is e-mailed back to the customer, unlocks the demo product and
converts it into standard product.

Overview
********
`help2man' is a tool for automatically generating simple manual pages
from program output.
It is intended to provide an easy way for software authors to include
a manual page in their distribution without having to maintain that
document.
Given a program which produces resonably standard `--help' and
`--version' outputs, `help2man' will attempt to re-arrange that output
into something which resembles a manual page.
Availability
************
The current version is available from:
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/help2man/
News
****
* help2man is now officially a GNU program. Add bug reporting
address and `GNU' prefix.
* configure now checks for `perl5' as well as `perl'.

Subject: sysstat-3.2.3 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 18:30:27 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi everybody,
There is yet another release for sysstat. Version 3.2.3 is available
now on sunsite/metalab server, and should be the last stable version
from the 3.2 series:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/
70kB sysstat-3.2.2.tar.gz
72kB sysstat-3.2.2-1.src.rpm
47kB sysstat-3.2.2-1.i386.rpm
The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, iostat and sa tools.
If you have experienced problems with sysstat on your SMP machine and
you are running a Linux 2.2.x kernel (with x <= 15), you should upgrade
to sysstat-3.2.3. It includes a workaround for an SMP race that Linux
has in its serial driver. This Linux bug has been fixed in kernel
2.2.16.
To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/
Changes vs 3.2.2 are:
2000/06/25: Version 3.2.3
* Configuration scripts updated. Can now print a help message.
* Workaround for SMP race in Linux serial driver added. This workaround
is enabled by default in RPM binary packages.
* sar manual page updated.
* Added iostat disk accounting patch against 2.2.16 linux kernel.
* Removed a few typos in the comments of the source code.

XFce 3.4.3 is released and available for download from http://www.xfce.org
XFce is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure environment for X11 released under
the terms of the GNU/GPL license, based on GTK+, with pulldown menus and color
icons, 3D widgets, etc. XFce features now a set of applications including a
powerful Window Manager xfwm, a toolbar/application launcher, a backdrop
manager, a system sound manager for X11, a user friendly interface for mouse
configuration, a pager providing a miniature view of all XFce desktops, a
clock/calendar and at last but not least a filemanager, all sharing the same
look'n feel.
A lot of work has been done on memory management (xfce and xfwm both report
no memory leak in either memprof nor dmalloc)
Speed has been improved (from my point of view, on my system). Intensive testing
have been performed simulating open/close of hundreds of xterms.
Bug reported regarding Ted crashing and gnumeric causing xfwm to stop have been
fixed.
Therefore, if you are currently using xfce 3.4.0, 3.4.1 or 3.4.2, I strongly
suggest that you upgrade to the latest 3.4.3 release.

The July general meeting of the Cincinnati Linux Users Group
will be on Saturday, July 22nd, at 10:30 a.m. The location
will be:
Compuware Offices
4555 Lake Forest Drive
Room 140 (Westlake Center)
Blue Ash, OH
This month the subject will be "Installing and Configuring
Linux". People will be on hand to help with new installations
or configuring existing installations. People are encouraged
to bring their machines.
You can bring your own distribution or we will provide one.
Normally, our meetings last until around 12:30. This month
we may go longer, depending on how many installation there
are and how they are going.
If you plan to bring a system, please send a message to
me (jeff@jsgis.com) or any board member. Knowing how many
people plan to bring a system will help us determine how
long the meeting will go.
See our web site for more information: http://www.clug.org
or contact me at jeff@jsgis.com
