July 15: Making Your Own CDs
Members of the Washington Area Computer User Group (WAC) will
demonstrate how to make personal music and data CDs with inexpensive
CD Recorder drives and software for the Microsoft Windows9x and
GNU/Linux operating systems. The discussion will cover basic system
requirements, as well as Do's and Don'ts.
This meeting will also feature a demonstration of how to configure a
Microsoft Windows98 PC to use two video monitors simultaneously. This
feature gives Windows98 users more screen "real estate" for opening
application windows, playing games, developing software, etc without
purchasing expensive large video monitors.
There will also be opportunities to receive help on general computer
hardware and software questions.
WAC is a general interest computer user group that supports a variety of
operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux. WAC
meetings are free and open to the public. The meeting is scheduled for
12:30 to 4:00 PM on July 15 in Conference Room 2 of the Fairfax County
Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax, Virginia.
For more information, visit the WAC web site at URL

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Jungle Monkey 0.1.8 ("Igoo Two") is now available. This release fixes
bugs with file transfers. Version 0.1.7 ("Igoo", unannounced) has a
new file transfer protocol, contains vast GTK GUI improvements, and
includes the usual small bug fixes.
JM is available at http://www.junglemonkey.net
Source and DEB's available. RPM's will be available as soon as
someone mails them to me.
Jungle Monkey (JM) is a distributed file sharing program. You join
channels where people offer files for download. You can offer your
own files and create your own channels as well. Once you download a
file, others can connect to you to get that file. You can also search
for files and chat.
0.1.8 ("Igoo Two" release)
=====
* Fixed bugs where file transfers timed out and files weren't saved
properly.
0.1.7 ("Igoo" release)
=====
* File transfers now use new mirror-rendezvous protocol (Part
of "Jungle Monkey 2" plan)
* Vast GTK GUI improvements (preferences dialog, configuration file,
message boxes)
* Small bug fixes (chat leave messages now seen, ping warnings fixed,
directories work, port configuration now works)
* Portability fixes (NetBSD, detects broken Linux poll)
PS:
- There will be a paper on BTP, our endhost multicast protocol, up
soon.
- It should be easier to build from CVS now.

Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 17:27:45 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
P o r t - F T P
Version 1.1.6
I'm proud to announce version 1.1.6 of pftp. This version supports fast
data transfer via TCP and UDP unicasted, broadcasted, and multicasted on
IPv4 as well as IPv6. Here are some details:
TCP based data transfer:
- Send and receive directories recusively
- Send and receive standard input and output
- Filter your connection (usually by pgp, mcrypt, or gzip/gunzip)
- Correct timing (in contrast to ftp)
- Set aliases for host and user names
- Reduce informational output at a minimum for shell scripts
- Set size of string to be read and written at once
- Set the net buffer size
- Set the bandwidth (calibration is 2 seconds, period is 2 seconds)
- May be started on command line, as a daemon on any port, or be
started by the internet daemon. The letter include a password
checking mechanism
- You may also send files and directories including a subject line
and a message file if needed to other people in the net. Of course
you can comfortably browse through your received data.
- In contrast to the mail system messages can be sent reliable to the
remote host running a pftp deamon
- Perform a network performance test based on TCP
- A special option optimizes buffers for data transfer over Gigabit
Ethernet links
UDP based data transfer:
- On the client side you can send your data as well as you send it
with the TCP based connection. On the server side everything you
receive is written to standard output. UDP based data transfer is
unreliable though. It is meant for sending and receiving AUDIO
and VIDEO streams.
- You can send unicasted, broadcasted, and multicasted datagrams.
- On Linux it is possible to interactively change the bandwidth
and drop some datagrams periodically on the client side. On the
server side the number of incomming bytes can be shown.
- Perform a network performance test based on UDP.
All of the above mentioned features are supported for both Internet
protocols IPv4 and IPv6.
So, what you are waiting for? Download pftp's latest version from
http://www.pftp.de
pftp is free software. It is released under the GNU General Public License.
Hope, you have a lot of fun with that nice little program!

=========
A new alpha version of TkDVI, a TeX DVI previewer based on Tcl/Tk, is now

TkDVI is licensed under the same license as Tcl/Tk.
Visit the TkDVI home page on the World-Wide Web at
http://www.tm.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~lingnau/tkdvi/
Have fun, and let me know how you like TkDVI!
Anselm
<lingnau@tm.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de>
- From the README:
Features
- --------
Here are the basic features of the TkDVI previewer:
* Multiple DVI files.
* Multiple DVI file windows.
* Each DVI file window supports various display modes:
- `Single Page' as in xdvi
- `Two-page spread': Two facing pages, like a book.
- `16-page overview': Sixteen reduced pages at the same time, great
for looking at page breaks and floats.
- Full-screen mode for presentations.
* `Magnification glass' as in xdvi.
* `gv'-style page selector.
* PDF-style document info (experimental).
* PDF-style bookmarks when used with `hyperref' LaTeX extension
(experimental)
* `Layering' of DVI material for presentations, fill-in-the-blanks etc.
(experimental)
* Automatic reload of changed DVI files on Expose events as in xdvi.
This updates all windows that the DVI file is displayed in
(regardless of whether they are currently being exposed or not).
* Can be easily adapted, reconfigured or extended in Tcl.
The most notable omissions to date are:
* No support for EPS graphics inclusions.
Here are the basic features of the `dvi' Tk extension:
* Implements re-usable Tk `image type'. DVI material can occur
wherever Tk allows images, e.g., on a canvas (which is the most
sensible place), but also in labels, buttons etc.
* Supports multiple windows displaying multiple pages from multiple
DVI files simultaneously.
* All DVI files share the same fonts (if resolution etc. allows).
* Supports fonts in PK format. (Virtual font support is forthcoming;
in the meantime dvicopy can be used to de-reference virtual fonts
in DVI files.) The standard Kpathsea library is used to locate
(and make) fonts.
* Supports arbitrary (integer-factor) image shrinking as in xdvi.
* Supports anti-aliasing as in xdvi.
* Supports simple uses of colour.
* Comes with an (incomplete) self-test suite.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hash: SHA1
ftpd-BSD-0.3.2 (seventh release of ftpd-BSD)
This is a Linux port of the ftp server (ftpd) from OpenBSD (the
version number of the OpenBSD version is 6.5 and the version number of
this port is 0.3.2 - seventh public release of it).
This server is not as featureful as wu-ftpd but it has the advantage
of being smaller and (presumably) safer. As there have been some
security issues with both wu-ftpd and proftpd, this is one possible
alternative.
Version 0.3.2 sync'ed up with the status of the OpenBSD CVS tree as of
2000/07/07. The changes over version 0.3.1 are minor, being mostly
bug fixes. GNU libc version 2.1 at least is required to compile and
run this port.
Note that a security hole was announced on the ftp server from OpenBSD
version 2.7 (see <http://www.openbsd.org/errata.html#ftpd> for
details). This *does not* affect version 0.3.1 of this port (because
Linux does not have the setproctitle() function anyway). *However*,
the present version 0.3.2 *does* include the corrections made by the
OpenBSD team for this hole.
