         Beowulf Clusters: Linux-based Supercomputers
                  that Use Commodity Hardware

6/21/00
Wednesday
6:30pm-8:00pm
IBM Headquarters Building
590 Madison Avenue at 57th Street
Check in at lobby for badge and room number

Beowulf is a Linux-based supercomputer that uses commodity hardware
arranged in a cluster, or some grouping of off-the-shelf nodes
interconnected by a private high-speed network, such as ethernet.

The work to be done by the Beowulf cluster occurs in parallel. For example,
in a 64 node cluster, one node is assigned to be the "manager" and will
parse jobs to each of the other nodes which all work simultaneously. When a
node is ready for more work, it is given a new job or more data to crunch.

When compared to an equivalent "big iron" SMP box, such as a Sun
Microsystems E10000, an IBM SP2, or an SGI Origin; Beowulf-class
architectures cost significantly less - as much as five to 20 times less
than the proprietary equivalent.

Beowulf systems can be found in the financial services industry calculating
risk or interest rates. In the pharmaceutical industry designing new drugs.
They are prevalent in Hollywood rendering special effects (The Titantic is a
noteworthy example.) They are also widely found performing scientific
computing work or any task that is computationally demanding.

We are happy to have Greg Lindhal, senior engineer at High Performance
Technologies, Inc. (hpti.com) in Reston, VA present this topic and answer
your questions.

Jungo Ltd. Adds Hot Swap Capabilities to The Linux Operating System.

The “GO Hot-Swap" tools enable users to easily develop hot-swappable drivers
from scratch, or immediately add Hot-Swap capabilities to their existing PCI
drivers.

The “GO Hot-Swap” is a generic solution, i.e. it is not dependant on the
hardware configuration on which it is running, or the host PCI controller it is
using. The same drivers written using the “GO Hot-Swap” solution will compile
and run on all supported operating systems, and on all CompactPCI systems.

MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Saturday, June 24th., 1300 to 1500 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

The main presentation:

Carry-over from last month -- Finishing this topic, Phil H
will use the 'h2n' tool and some shell scripting to set up a simple
set of DNS files for local nameservice provision behind a residential
firewall. Please review the DNS HOW-TO -- see, e.g.:
        http://www.ssc.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html

The second half will be a 'Stump the Guru' Q and A session.
Bring a sick box, or your toughest problem and we'll pull a panel
from the attendees.

There are also raffle goodies from TurboLinux, and a
publisher who will be next month's featured sponsor on the
group's web-pages.

As always (both with the informal nature of the group's
`management' and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules),
the agenda and content are subject to change.

Additionally, the _formal_ meeting ends at the stated time.
We've noticed that folks continue to stand around in the parking lot
for _hours_. We'll probably adjourn to a local watering hole,
to slake thirst and sit down.

MEETING SITE:
=============
This month's meeting will be held at:

        TEAM America (http://www.teamamerica.com)
        110 East Wilson Bridge Road
        Worthington, OH 43085
        (614) 848-3995

The building is at US23 North and 270 off of
East Wilson Bridge Road just around the first
        curve.

Parking is FREE !

.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday
of a month, alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh
their schedules with COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend
on facility availabity, with common-sense relocation in the
holiday season.

The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting
site. See: http://stones.wcbe.org/~COLUG/meetings.php3

Meeting Schedule
================

The NEXT meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, July 26,
2000 from 19:00 to 21:00 local -- Location is up in the air --
we've pretty well outgrown the kindly donated TeamAmerica site,
although we continue to 'shoe-horn' in until a suitable
replacement is found.
