Subject: SMSLink 0.48b-2 now available
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 20:16:56 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.48b-2.
This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom or Wavecom voice modem GSM module,
which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support -- please see the project web page for a list of supported
hardware). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. Also included
is a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to send (short)
emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail delivery to the
GSM is under development.
The server modules only runs under Linux at the present time. The
command-line client already exists for Linux, Solaris and HP-UX (but
could be ported to most any Unix platform, I suspect). A Win32 client is
in the works. The server also supports direct telnet ("interactive"
mode).
Version 0.48b-2 is mostly a bugfix release (see CHANGELOG for details),
but also includes full support for sending in PDU mode. Warning for
SMSLink users: the configuration file format has changed again since
version 0.46b to accomodate for a pseudo device-driver (please see man
gsmdevices(5)).
This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.
For more information, please visit the project web page at :
http://www.styx.demon.co.uk/smslink/
Thanks.
Ph. A.

Subject: Aureal "Vortex" Soundcard Petition
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 20:31:50 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Aureal, makers of the hugely popular "Vortex" sound processor chips used
in various cards such as the Diamond Monster MX300, the Turtle Beach
Montego series, and Aureals own soundcards, have kept the specifications
of their cards closed, which means only they can create drivers for the
cards.
This is a problem, especially since there is a possibility of them going
out of business soon, as no one else would be able to make drivers for
newer or alternative operating systems (Win2k, Linux, BSD, etc).
Because of this, a petition has been setup to ask Aureal for
specifications to the sound chips so independant developers can make
drivers.
If you have one of these cards, or you want to promote open hardware
specifications, you should sign this petition.
The petition can be found here:

(We have just released Exile III: Ruined World, a huge fantasy role-playing
game for Linux. Exile III won Computer Gaming World's award for Shareware
Game of the Year. The demo may be found at
http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/exile3/linuxexile3.html. Hope you like it!)
Exile III: Ruined World
A Fantasy Role-Playing Game for Linux
Spiderweb Software and Boutell.com proudly present Exile III: Ruined
World! Exile III: Ruined World is an epic fantasy role-playing game for
Linux. It features a fascinating plot, an enormous world which changes as
the game progresses, and many hours of fun for anyone who longs for a
classic role-playing game.
The surface world is ruled by the Empire, and it has been for as long as
anyone can remember. As long as you followed the rules and kept quiet, it
was a good life. But stand out, not fit in, say the wrong thing, and the
punishment was swift, sure, and horrible. You were cast into Exile, a huge
series of caverns far below the surface of the earth, there to live out the
rest of your days in misery.
So it has been for many years. But now, at last, an escape route from
your underground prison has been found. You are the brave soul chosen to lead
the first expedition to the surface. You hope to find a way for your people
to return to the light of the sun. Instead, you find a ravaged world,
rapidly being devoured by mysterious plagues of monsters. You will have to
act quickly. If not, the underworld will be the only place left where humans
can live.
What makes Exile III exceptional? Well, it features ...
* Involving, intricate plot, with 200,000 words of story!
* An enormous, changing world. Do nothing, and things evolve around you.
Refugees move from town to town. Villages will be destroyed. Characters will
die. Monsters will gain territory.
* Detailed, open ended system. Don't want to go on adventures? Do odd jobs.
Save up and buy a house. Go on one of dozens of side missions. Explore an
enormous outdoors with well over a hundred dungeons and towns. Just go
through peoples' houses and rummage through their stuff!
* Pleasing, professionally done graphics and sound.
* Carefully designed interface, with comprehensive online help, adventure
journals, and the ability to enable you to do everything you want with the
minimum amount of fuss.
Although Exile III is a sequel to the award-winning shareware games
Exile I and II, it is designed to be completely playable as a stand-alone
game, with absolutely no experience with previous Exile games required.
Exile 3 for Linux requires glibc 2.1 or later to run. This translates to
having Redhat Linux 6.0 or later, or a similiar version of Linux. Exile 3
for Linux will be released Summer, 2000. You can find information and a
large demo at http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/exile3/linuxexile3.html.

I am looking for people to organize a LUG for the Northeast Tennessee
and/or Southwest Virgina area. I know there was an effort to form one
around 1998 in Washington County, TN, but have not been successful
contacting anyone involved with that earlier effort. I would rather
pool resources with those persons than have a duplication of efforts.
Those interested in joining the NETLUG or having information about the
earlier embodiment of the LUG may contact me via email rather than
generating unnecessary and inappropriate newsgroup traffic.
Thank you.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi everybody,
Sysstat release 3.2.2 is available now on sunsite/metalab server:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/
69kB sysstat-3.2.2.tar.gz
70kB sysstat-3.2.2-1.src.rpm
47kB sysstat-3.2.2-1.i386.rpm
The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, iostat and sa tools.
Versions numbering will now follow Linux kernels rule: Version 3.2.2 is
sysstat latest *stable* release.
Version 3.3.1 will include the mpstat command, and will be considered as
a development release.
To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/
Changes vs 3.2 are:
2000/06/11: Version 3.2.2 - <sebastien.godard@wanadoo.fr>
* Now handle interrupts per processor better. Output improved.
* Makefile modified to comply with redhat good packaging.
* sysstat initialization script updated (don't su to root when we are
already root).
* sar now looks for sadc data collector in more places.
* NLS is now enabled by default.
* Silly bug in iostat disk accounting patch fixed.
* Added iostat disk accounting patch against 2.2.15 linux kernel.
Patches against other 2.2.x kernels may be found on sysstat web page.
