MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Wednesday, May 31th., 1900 to 2100 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

The main presentation - Several quickies:

        Richard Threadgill of Turbo Linux will be present, and present
of the benefits of the distribution. The cluster, and Asian character
set support are interesting aspects of the product in which members
of the group have expressed an interest;

        Jim Wildman has  offered to demonstrate VMWare and Wine;

        A tricked out multi-media X setup will be demonstrated by a
list member, whose name I cannot immediately lay hands on. The
underlying request sought: "A tweaked out amped up desktop/mulimedia
linux demo. I am sure someone on the list edits audio, knows about
the cool games, etc., etc.," and

        We've had a request for DNS setup. Absent a volunteer, Phil H
will use the 'h2n' tool and some shell scripting to set up a simple
set of DNS files for local nameservice provision behind a residential
firewall. Please review the DNS HOW-TO -- see, e.g.:
        http://www.ssc.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html

        As always (both with the informal nature of the group's
`management' and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules),
the agenda and content are subject to change.

        Additionally, the _formal_ meeting ends at the stated time.
We've noticed that folks continue to stand around in the parking lot
for _hours_. We'll probably adjourn to a local watering hole,
to slake thirst and sit down.

MEETING SITE:
=============
This month's meeting will be held at:

        TEAM America  (http://www.teamamerica.com)
        110 East Wilson Bridge Road
        Worthington, OH 43085
        (614) 848-3995

        The building is at US23 North and 270 off of
        East Wilson Bridge Road just around the first
        curve.

Parking is FREE !

.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday
of a month, alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh
their schedules with COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend
on facility availabity, with common-sense relocation in the
holiday season.

The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting
site. See: http://stones.wcbe.org/~COLUG/meetings.php3

Meeting Schedule
================

          The NEXT meeting is scheduled on Saturday, June 24,
2000 from 13:00 to 15:00 local -- Location is up in the air --
we've pretty well outgrown the kindly donated TeamAmerica site,
although we continue to 'shoe-horn' in until a suitable
replacement is found.

Subject: KSnuffle-0.6 - network packet sniffer for KDE
Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 20:12:58 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

NOTE: Versions up to 0.3 inclusive had a great big security hole. Anyone
      using these should upgrade!

NEW : The big new addition to 0.6 is packet detail display, ie., show
      protocol structure and values. Watch those passwords whizz past!
      In addition, you can display the data in an inidividual TCP/IP
      stream (with due acknowledgement to Ethereal for the idea). There
      is also a DNS traffic plugin which displays basic DNS request/
      answer information (spot those naughty registrations .....)

      Version 0.6 also supports finer grained control for non-root users
      who are allowed to run KSnuffle. Such users may be restricted to
      seeing protocol data only (ie., application data is zapped); a pre-
      filter (tcpdump(8) style) can also be applied so that they only see
      some subset of network traffic. Useful for normal users debugging
      network applications.

NOTE: I have given all this a reasonable testing; you would probably
      want to check it out yourself! All feedback and bug reports
      welcome. Please see the Caveats section in the documentation.

MANDRAKE:
      There seems to be a problem building on Mandrake 7.0 with gcc 2.95
      I've installed the latest autoconf for Mandrake on my RedHat box
      and used it to build the configure script, but I've no way of
      testing whether this has any effect - feedback please!

- -----[The Actual Announcement]----------------------------------------

KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:

        * Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
        * Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
        * Multiple concurrent monitors
        * Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
        * Textual display of network traffic overview
        * Full(er) details of protocol and application data available
        * Display of data in TCP/IP streams
        * Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
        * Parallel display of multiple load histograms
        * Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
        * Support for use by selected non-root users
        * Plugin support - 0.6 contains dns, summary and end-to-end plugins

In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP and ICMP. Packet decoding does not go down into the
application level except for DNS packets.

Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.

The plugin interface as changed a tiny bit, specifically the structure
returned by "getPlugin" has changed. If (in the unlikely event) anyone
has written a plugin, see the PLUGINS file for details.

KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-0.6/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.

"While working on our other products, we noticed that it was often
difficult and time consuming to find tools that we wanted to use that

creating a second tier Linux distribution that was strictly focused on
developer’s needs, and would be complimentary to all of the major Linux
distributions," said president Shawn Gordon.

"With PowerPlant, we are working towards our goal of providing the Linux
community with rock-solid, easy-to-use, all-in-one development tools.
Many developers from other computing platforms have seen the same
opportunity here, however, theKompany.com will go one step further by
perfecting it," said Gordon. "We believe that by using the open source
development model, we can exceed the quality of development software on
any existing proprietary platform in a short time, and at low cost."

theKompany.com's products, including PowerPlant ($49.95 plus S&H) which
includes over 150 tools, and the PowerPlant Developer Network ($39.95
p/year subscription), are available for sale directly on its web site,
and available at local and online software distributors and resellers.
As an introductory incentive shipping and handling are included until
May 29, 2000.

PowerPlant includes a wide range of open source tools, like tools and
compilers for: BASIC, Pascal, Python, Java, Perl, Scheme and C++. In
addition, PowerPlant offers 3D graphics, sound tools, interface

Knox Software Ships Oracle Tested Hot Backup Solution for Oracle8i on Linux

Arkeia for Oracle8i Recovery Manager Protects Databases Running on 24/7
Production Servers
~~~~~~~~
Carlsbad, Calif. - May. 22, 2000 - Knox Software, a Southern Calif.-based
developer of enterprise network backup software, announced today that it has
shipped Arkeia® for Oracle8i (tm) Recovery Manager (RMAN), a network backup
solution for enterprise-class Oracle8i databases running on the Linux
platform.
Arkeia for Oracle8i RMAN provides Oracle® database administrators with a
seamless, Oracle-tested solution for backing up Oracle8i (versions 8.1.6 or
later) on Linux. Unlike conventional backup products that require Oracle8i
to be taken offline prior to backup, the tight integration of Arkeia for
Oracle8i RMAN with Oracle’s RMAN data management API enables database
administrators to both backup and restore databases while leaving their
mission-critical production servers online. For Oracle8i applications that
require 24/7 availability, Arkeia for Oracle8i RMAN provides the only
Oracle-tested backup solution available today for Oracle8i in the Linux
environment.
enterlinux.com is a new linux site with some innovative
features and with a very different focus from the existing sites.
enterlinux.com is a Zope and Zope Portal ToolKit (PTK) based
site.
enterlinux.com is another fine production from the folks at
codeit.com.
* It is a vertical portal for the enterprise user of Linux.
* If you are in the market for a Linux Server you might want to
check out  RaFiQi - the Request for Quotes service that sends
simultaneous requests fro quotes to multiple vendors.
* Other interesting areas of the site include the Community area
which includes extensions to the PTK.  These allow users to
contribute content to specific areas of the
site and to rate links, documents, news items and user behavior.
* The resources section has a Linux Directory of Sites which is
the Linux subtree from dmoz.org
* There is also a page with the search forms of some popular
Linux and Open Source sites.
enterlinux.com requires registration for use of the ecommerce
area.
Check out RaFiQi and put it through it's paces.
Listing in Linaucs the Linux Auctions Area, is free till end of
- -- Data Representations Launches Version 1.2 of Simplicity for Java
and Simplicity Professional
- -- New release adds database integration, Servlet development, and
cross-platform testing features to RAD tool suite.
SPRINGFIELD, NEW JERSEY, May 24, 2000 - Data Representations, Inc.
co-founder Carl Sayres, today announced the general availability of
Version 1.2 of Simplicity for Java and Simplicity Professional. The
new release brings improved functionality and performance to the
company's Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool suite.
"Version 1.2 marks another milestone in the evolution of the
Simplicity for Java family of products," said Mr. Sayres. "The new
features and capabilities in this release respond directly to customer
feedback and make our tools attractive to new categories of users,
such as those building data-intensive applications, and network based
applications."
Version 1.2 of the Simplicity for Java family of 100% Pure Java, Rapid
Application Development tools supports the development of both client
side and server side applications for mass deployment across the
internet, or within a company's intranet. The new release lets
developers connect applications to JDBC/ODBC-compliant databases
without writing any additional code, create dynamic web sites and
network applications using Java Servlet technology, and easily test
applications across diverse platforms.
The new version has been in use at many customer sites since April.
For a free evaluation copy, go to http://www.datarepresentations.com/.
- -- About the New Release --
Version 1.2 of Simplicity Professional offers new capabilities that
allow developers to build SQL queries graphically, and tie the
resulting data into their applications without programming. The tools
may be used with any JDBC or ODBC compliant database server.  The
addition of new database tools to Simplicity Professional's proven
Rapid Application Development suite provides a complete development
toolkit for building data-intensive applications without programming.
Version 1.2 of Simplicity Professional also introduces a new
environment for building Servlet-based network applications. A
development server runs behind the new Servlet Composer which allows
developers to build dynamic web sites and network services.
Also in Simplicity Professional is a 'One Click' tool that allows an
application built on one Operating System to be tested on another
operating system.
Both Simplicity for Java and Simplicity Professional allow the
creation of Applications using an interactive graphical approach to
user-interfaces as well as program logic. Once the application's user
interface is constructed, the Code Sourcerer(tm) interviews the
developer in plain English, and writes the necessary Java source code
to complete the program. Simplicity includes full support for AWT and
JFC/Swing, as well as full JavaBeans(tm) support to allow users to add
third party components to the tool suite.
