Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management
system. It provides a framework within which a team of developers
may work on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis
coordinates integrating these changes back into the master source
of the program, with as little disruption as possible.

If you would like to be part of the development team of this
established quality open source project, please feel free to contact me...

on behalf of the Bluefish development team, I'm proud to present
Bluefish 0.4

Bluefish is a programmer's HTML editor, designed to save the experienced
webmaster some keystrokes. It features a multiple file editor, multiple
toolbars, custom menus, image and thumbnail dialogs, open from the web,
CSS dialogs, PHP, SSI and RXML support, HTML validation and lots of
wizards.

Changes: Much faster highlighting, a new, very powerful
search-and-replace engine (allowing regular expressions), more logical
menus, more HTML features, more translations into your local language,
and a lot of bugfixes.

for more information check:
http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/

regards,
        Olivier

From: J.Anders@Informatik.TU-Chemnitz.DE (Dr. Joerg Anders)
Subject: Qt based note editor 1.4.0
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 17:37:35 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Version 1.4.0 of the note editor on Linux (GPL, beta) is ready:

http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~ja/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features
============

- - volume change
- - tempo change
- - program (instrument) change
- - key signature change
- - time signature change
- - clefs with octave shift
- - export Midi

Other Properties
=================

   * insertion/deletion/modification of notes, rests, dotted notes, slured
     notes, clefs, time signatures, key signatures, beamed notes, triplets on different staffs;
   * building accords, undo, block copy, block delete,multi staff block copy,
     multi staff block delete;
   * playing on /dev/sequencer (if correctly configured) whereby:
        o giving each staff a different voice;
        o giving each staff a different channel;
        o highlighting the played notes;
        o setting midi tempo;
   * export MusiXTeX
   * saving an restoring the files. The file format is similarily to the
     format of the music publication program (MUP):
        http://www.arkkra.com
     So you if you are a MUP user you have the possibility to convert
     the files into Midi and Postscript.

Because it is a Qt program I plan to transform it into a KDE
application (if ther is enough interest).

Planned
=======

*transpose
*mute
*import Midi

Conditions
==========

The program is tested on S.u.S.E.-Linux 6.2, Qt-2.0.2-13, and sound card
AWE-64. I used egcs-2.91.66.

You need the following packages:

   * g++ compiler
   * X11 (include and libraries)
   * Qt-2 (include and libraries)

recommended:

   * LibKMid; see http://www.arrakis.es/~rlarrosa/libkmid.html

You can compile the program without LibKMid. But in this case an

        #include /usr/src/linux/include/linux/soundcard.h

occurs which can cause a lot of machine/sound card depencies. Therefore if
your sound doesn't work and you are sure Midi works on your machine (you use
KMid successfully) then try compilation with LibKMid!

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

 Hello friends,

 You may be aware of the mini-HOWTO "Linux pre-installation checklist"
 which is part of the official HOWTOs of LDP. This HOWTO is a very
 popular tool considering the number of visitors to the site where it
 is hosted, and the number of feedback messages I get every day, and
 the fact that it has been translated into many foreign languages.

 I am now working on a sequel to this checklist -- called as the
 post-installation checklist. In this checklist I will be including
 steps one must take after installing Linux e.g. copying and storing
 important files like XF86Config. I will include some finer points to
 help system tuning, network admin, maintenance, updates etc.

 I invite suggestions from the Linux community on items which can go
 into the post-installation checklist. You must include actions which
 you think are necessary after installation of Linux, and particularly
 your experiences where you had wished you had done some specific
 action. Please send replies to me privately (not through this mailing
 list). I will compile the suggestions and inform all of you.

 For your information, the pre-installation checklist can be found at:
            http://algolog.tripod.com/lnxchk.htm

 ....partha

 PS: Non-English speaking readers are welcome to make translations of
 the pre-installation checklist, as well as the post-installation list
 (when it is ready). Please get in touch with me.

2.1.30 to the Open Source community. The Open Group Public license will
allow the release of the Motif source code for use, reproduction and
distribution on Open Source platforms such as Linux and FreeBSD, without
the payment of royalties. The further details and the source code for
Open Motif is now available at http://www.opengroup.org/openmotif.

Concurrent with this announcement, Integrated Computer Solutions, Inc.
(ICS), has released the "Open Motif Everywhere" distribution. In
creating this distribution, ICS has compiled and tested Open Motif on a
number of distributions including: Corel (Intel), FreeBSD (Intel), Linux
PPC 2000 (PPC), Mandrake (Intel), Red Hat (Intel, Sparc, Alpha),
Slackware (Intel), Storm 2000 (Intel), SuSE (Intel), and TurboLinux
(Intel). RPMs, DEBs, and tar.gz are provided as appropriate for the
specific distribution. Although not specifically tested, other
distributions are also expected to work.

ICS is making the binaries and sources to Open Motif Everywhere
available for free downloads through ICS' new Motif portal site,

CompuServe® Computing Forums Now FREE

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ. - (May 2, 2000) - Creative Systems Programming Corporation
is pleased to announce that their computing forums are now publicly
available to all users on the World Wide Web absolutely free of any charges.
CompuServe is making a radical departure from the previously closed systems
employed to build and manage some of the most successful online communities
for more than two decades

All of the Creative Systems forums, including the Linux Forum, the Emerging
Technology Forum, the IBM Forum, the Lotus Forum and the Unix Forum are now
available to anyone with an AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) screen name. This
free access also includes CompuServe Instant Messenger (CSIM), Netscape AOL
Instant Messenger, CompuServe and AOL accounts. Now, in addition to the 2.5
million members of CompuServe, the Creative Systems Forums are available to
the 22 million members of AOL as well as the 40 million holders of no-charge
Instant Messenger accounts.

"This is a very exciting time for us. Now, for the very first time, all of
our forums are available to everyone," said Larry B. Finkelstein, president
of Creative Systems Programming Corporation. "We've got some great people
that are willing to share their knowledge and experience with all
participants. These communities are one of the best kept secrets on the
web, and now they're open to everyone that wants to join. "

"It's like having your own personal consultants that are available 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, with expertise in every area imaginable," said Julia
Partridge, the manager of the IBM Forum.

The Linux Forum (http://go.compuserve.com/linuxforum?LOC=US)
The Linux Forum is a community of Linux enthusiasts and others that are
evaluating Linux as an alternative to Windows. While our earliest members
are highly technical, leading edge and early adopters, many business
professionals and mainstream computer users are joining us as Linux makes
the transition to the desktop and moves away from its current stronghold as
a server platform.

The Emerging Technology Forum
(http://go.compuserve.com/emergingtechnology?LOC=US)
The Emerging Technology Forum members discuss new and emerging technologies,
providing a useful and meaningful context for anyone interested in exploring
how specific technologies can change and enhance their personal and
professional lives.

The IBM Forum (http://go.compuserve.com/ibmforum?LOC=US)
The IBM Forum grew out of the ThinkPad and OS/2 communities and has been
expanded to include all software and hardware products from IBM. It's the
largest virtual IBM User Group in the world, with members sharing their
expertise in setting up and maintaining IBM systems, including desktop,
midrange, mainframe, mobile and personal systems.

The Lotus Forum (http://go.compuserve.com/lotusforum?LOC=US)
The Lotus Forum provides free Lotus product technical support to end users,
developers and administrators. With a special emphasis on Lotus Notes,
Domino and SmartSuite, members of the L-Team are available to assist with
any technical or "how to" questions.

The Unix Forum (http://go.compuserve.com/unixforum?LOC=US)
The Unix Forum is one of the oldest Unix communities on the web, and is
frequented by members with an interest in the UNIX operating system in all
of its forms. This includes particular vendors' flavors of the operating
system, including SCO and Sun, as well as clones such as Linux and BSD.

Founded in 1984 and a privately-held company, Creative Systems Programming
Corporation is a CompuServe Business Partner and full service consulting
firm, providing knowledge and community management services to an
international clientele.

                                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

I just put issue #15 of the column online and it can - as usual - be
found on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors. Otherwise just follow the
links at the end of this posting.

Georg's Brave GNU World is a monthly column which is being released
simultaneously in five languages (English, German, French, Japanese
and Spanish) on the web and printed in the German "Linux-Magazin" as
well as the "Linux Magazine France." This makes it the monthly column
with the widest distribution worldwide as far as I know.

If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 2
mails a month).

The 15th issue covers the following topics:

 * ifrOSS (Free Software and the law in Germany)

 * xmlBlaster (an XML based Message Oriented Middleware)

 * Scsh (a cool Scheme shell)

 * Social aspects of the GNU Project
                        (some thoughts about the social implications
                         of the GNU Philosophy)

This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"

This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so don´t hesitate to contact me if your project is under the
GPL/LGPL and you´d like to see it introduced here.

From: Albert van der Horst <albert@spenarnc.xs4all.nl>
Subject: fig-Forth for Linux
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 18:01:53 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

# Copyright(2000): Dutch Forth Workshop Foundation, by GNU Public License

The classical fig Forth is now available for Linux-i86, allbeith in a 32-bit
version, called `lina'. This is version 2.78 and still beta.
It can be downloaded from the following site
   http://home.hccnet.nl/a.w.m.van.der.horst/figforth.html.
`lina' complies with the Fig glossary and the fig installation manual ,
which is present in electronic form (I OCR-ed it). The deviations, mainly
related to the 32 bit issue and floppy disks, are documented in an addendum.

There are just three files involved
1. the executable (<12K!)
2. a block file containing library functions and examples
3. for modifications: the assembler source.

The motivation for having this type of Forth available follows from its
characteristics. It is available as an assembler source, it is an
indirect threaded Forth and it is documented.
An assembler source has distinct advantages for getting started from
nothing. An engineer might balk at the description of how to use a meta
compiler, but feels at ease with a (much larger) assembler manual.
Rebuilding requires the nasm assembler that is readily available.
Although speed is currently in fashion, (using subroutine threaded Forth's
with optimisers), indirect threading is the preferred choice for some
applications. I did this work, because I needed it.

The simplicity is refreshing, compared to e.g. TILE , gForth , eforth etc.
`lina' is binary portable across all linux version, at least from 1.0.13.
`lina' is usable as a script language as is demonstrated by the wc utility
(consisting of the 11K6 lina plus a 60 line program, no libraries).
The single high level word `LINOS' taps all the power of the Linux
operating system. This wc utility contains (in its 60 lines!) words for
opening, reading and closing files, because that is not part of `lina' itself.

It is based on the work of Charlie Krajewski and Thomas Newman, Hayward, Ca.
that is available via taygeta. And of course kudo's to FIG.
The original is public domain. My extensions are GPL-ed or libary GPL-ed.
I transferred the copyright to the Dutch Forth Workshop, a foundation that
supports Forth and defends the GPL.

If you want to use this work as a starting point (e.g. for ANSI-fication),
contact me at albert@spenarnc.xs4all.nl. There is a whole family of Forths,
i.a. booting directly from hard disk into a 32 bit protected mode Forth,
that is not ready for publication.
