SuSE Presents the Latest in High Availability for Linux
5/17/00
Wednesday
6:30pm-8:00pm
IBM Headquarters Building
590 Madison Avenue at 57th Street
Check in at lobby for badge and room number
Two short years ago, skeptics used to complain, "Linux will never
succeed... There are no large companies behind the platform... There's no
support... There is no top tier relational database for Linux... There is
no journaling filesystem and how can you expect me to deploy it in a
production environment when there is no high availability?" It took some
time, but one by one, each of these criticisms has been bowled over by the
ever-accelerating snowball of Linux.
Based in Nurnberg, Germany, SuSE AG is a global software company that among
other things, produces the well-known Linux distribution by the same name.
In addition, SuSE is pushing the envelope of production-level Linux that is
appropriate for use by banks, trading houses and other entities with IT
infrastructures that simply can not go down.
High availability enables you to link two or more servers together so that
one transparently picks up the computing load should the other fail. SuSE's
HA solution removes any single point of failure and allows applications to
increase availability to the level required for mission-critical data center
operations. This failover capability is an important component of the
maturation of Linux as complete enterprise computing environment.
Recognized for his work in the Linux FailSafe, Linux Virtual Server, Linux
HA, and Heartbeart projects, Lars Marowsky-Brée will answer your questions
and showcase the cutting edge of high availability Linux. This is a very
technical meeting, but should not be missed by either newbie or elitist.

| Eridani Star System announces: |
`--------------------------------'
Eridani Linux 6.2 (Jayden) is released.
Also available:
Mandrake 7.0.2 (Air) Slackware 7 Debian 2.1
Corel Linux Storm Linux 2000
Older releases are also available.
** What happened to the Red Hat discs? The Eridani Linux discs are them. We **
** have released them as a new name since they are slightly different - all **
** the updates / errata are included, together with some extra software. **
The Eridani 6.2 CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the
updates from ftp.redhat.com to that time on the CD. Rather than having
them in a separate updates directory, we have opted to make them part of
the install, so you automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.
The installer updates have also been included, so the updated installer
floppy is not required either.
The other distributions' CDs are made from official ISO files made
available for download.
We have also started a new, simpler, disc pricing scheme. A single CD is
£3.50. Two or more CDs are £3.00 each. Most prices will therefore be
effectively lower, none have gone up.
For more information about the discs, and how to order, please visit our
Web site at:
http://www.eridani.co.uk
International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.
Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank are accepted. UK postal orders are also
accepted. International bank transfers are also accepted, however they are
subject to a £ 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a £ 1.50 charge
for postage and packaging for up to 2 CDs within the UK, variable for
international customers.

Subject: xzgv 0.4 - picture viewer for X with thumbnail-based file selector
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 17:37:04 GMT
Reply-To: russell.marks@dtn.ntl.com
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
(This announcement is rather late as the first attempted post went
missing, and it took me a while to realise this had happened.)
xzgv 0.4's been uploaded to metalab.unc.edu. It's a picture viewer for
X, with a thumbnail-based file selector. It uses GTK+ and Imlib. Most
file formats are supported, and the thumbnails used are compatible
with xv, zgv, and the Gimp. It can also be used with `xzgv file(s)',
to effectively bypass the file selector.
xzgv differs from other picture viewers for X in that it uses one
window for both the file selector and viewer, it (unlike xv) allows
both scrolling and fit-to-window methods of viewing large pictures,
and it (unlike xv and some others) doesn't ever mangle the picture's
aspect ratio. It also provides extensive keyboard support; if you
prefer using the keyboard, this is almost certainly the best viewer
for you. But it doesn't skimp on the mousey stuff, either. So anyway,
it's just terribly great. :-)
You can download it from here (but it's better to use your nearest
metalab mirror):
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/graphics/viewers/X/xzgv-0.4.tar.gz
I've also finally put a basic web page together, and that's here:
http://rus.members.beeb.net/xzgv.html
(If anyone wants to offer to host this on a better server, feel free
to email. :-))
0.4 adds brightness/contrast (keyboard-only for now, sorry) and file
rename, but is otherwise basically a tweak/bugfix release. (I was
originally going to hang on for a few more changes before uploading,
but you can see what happened to that idea. :-))
* Changes in xzgv 0.4
** New features
Added brightness/contrast, which works in just the same way as in zgv.
No mouse equivalent yet though, as I'm having some difficulty thinking
of a reasonable way to do it. (I may even end up (ab)using a modal
dialog for it, which would be *odd* but may be the least unreasonable
approach given the way xzgv works in general.) I'd ended up putting it
off for a while to ponder this, but in the end decided to get it done
and add the mousey version later.
Added file rename. The key it's on is heavily suboptimal (^n), but all
the good ones were taken. :-) Menu-wise it's ok though.
You can now use j/k for down/up in the selector, as vi-like
alternatives to the cursor keys.
** Bugfixes
Fixed the problem with toggling zoom off and on quickly, where
scrollbars were disabled but an unzoomed image was shown instead of a
zoomed one.
Now avoids the nasty `shear' effect you got when updating thumbnails
and it needed to scroll the window before updating a thumbnail.
** Other changes
I've (temporarily, I hope) disabled the MMX stuff by default; some
people were having trouble compiling with that enabled. You can still
enable it by editing config.mk.
Renamed `Exit viewer' menu item to `Exit to Selector', which should
make the meaning less ambiguous.
15/16-bit dithering can now be toggled with shift-f, by analogy with
zgv's `fakecols' toggle.
Here's the LSM entry:
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin3
Title: xzgv
Version: 0.4
Entered-date: 05APR00
Description: xzgv is a GTK+/Imlib-based picture viewer for X, which
supports most popular image formats. It provides a
thumbnail-based file selector, and allows panning and
fit-to-window methods of viewing.
xzgv is more a rewrite of zgv than a port as such, but
those familiar with zgv should see more than a passing
resemblance. And while it's mouse-friendly, it can
also be used entirely from the keyboard. :-)

Announcement for Moon-buggy version 0.5.1
=========================================
I'm proud to announce the release of Moon-buggy, version 0.5.1.
Moon-buggy is a simple character graphics game, where you drive some
kind of car across the moon's surface. Unfortunately there are
dangerous craters there. Fortunately your car can jump over them!
Version 0.5.1 fixes some bugs found in version 0.5.
The program is supposed to compile and run on any POSIX compliant
system which provides the curses library. But at the moment it is
only tested on GNU/Linux systems.
You may get moon-buggy via ftp from "sunsite.unc.edu". It is in the
file "/pub/Linux/games/arcade/moon-buggy-0.5.1.tar.gz". Another place
to look at, is the Moon-buggy download page at

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
PACT - "Port Accounting and Collection Tool" - is a software package to
do complete port accounting for SNMP-manageable devices like routers,
hubs, and switches. Administration is done using an HTML interface with
dynamic data fed through PHP and MySQL database backend.
The following changes have occured since the last announcement (0.8):
V0.9 - 14.5.2000
- new flag in hosts table, disabling a system temporarily
- disabled system listed red in host overview
- hidden ports listed red in full port overview
- fixed a bug which displayed a port's daily throughput even
after the customer ID was changed to a different one
- extended port names in ports-table to allow for longer names
(as needed for webserver-accounting as well as "Nokia M10 DSL
routers" [alambie@sgi.com])
- extra <td> in getacct.php3 messed up the output table in IE5
- for "0" values in graphical overview, browsers would display
oversized graphical bar
- new Systemtype "Cisco", allowing for special handling and
automatical reading of interface description for port defs
- in Cisco-mode, use Cisco-specifig MIB-field for port name
(otherwise problems with non-unique names on Catalyst 4k)
- new romanian language file
Please read the README included in the distribution for some minor
license changes and the "early bird" special for registered users!
Special won't last very long!

From: fawcett+yard@croftj.net
Subject: Yard 2.0 - creates custom bootdisks
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 17:57:37 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
DESCRIPTION:
Yard is a suite of Perl scripts for creating custom boot/rescue
disks. Yard is also useful for creating mini-distributions, or
Linux-on-a-floppy systems. You specify a basic set of files and
utilities for inclusion and Yard handles many of the details.
Features:
- File specs allow absolute and relative filenames, symbolic links,
file replacements and full shell-style globbing.
- Automatically determines necessary libraries and loaders.
- Strips binaries and libraries during copying.
- Automatically regenerates ld.so.cache
- Checks for broken symlinks
- Checks fstab, inittab, termcap, pam.conf for common errors and
inconsistencies.
- Does basic checking of PAM and NSS requirements.
- Checks user directories and files mentioned in /etc/passwd
- Checks command files (eg, rc.local and .login) and scripts for
missing binaries and command interpreters.
- Automatically performs filesystem compression and copying.
- Can be used with or without LILO.
- Can make single or double disk sets.
- Default choices provided for popular distributions.
- Extensive checking of user choices and execution errors.
Yard requires Perl 5, Linux kernel 2.0 or later.
NEW WITH 2.0:
Major version change. Lots of configuration changes to facilitate packaging:
= configure script now takes '--prefix DIR' arg like GNU configure, with
same effect (all destinations are made relative to DIR).
= distclean target makes directories pristine.
= Installation now requires make, make install and make customize.
Configuration recognizes ix86 and m68K. rdev is optional for m68K.
ldconfig is no longer required on the root fs; yard uses its -r flag and
runs it from the hard disk.
Provided minimal manpages for the scripts, to satisfy Debian.
Binaries and libraries are now objcopied with --strip-all, saving space.
Bug fixed: check_root_fs ignores dev=none or type=auto.
check_root_fs checks version of libc against libnss_SERVICE files, catching
common errors.
Fixed bug with kernel_version() so it should work with built and
pre-packaged kernels.

Enhanced Network Block Device for kernels 2.2
=============================================
ENBD 2.2.22
Following up on the linux journal article this month:
http://www2.linuxjournal.com/lj-issues/issue73/3778.html
I'm announcing the code availabilty. It's at:
Download: ftp://oboe.it.uc3m.es/pub/Programs/nbd-2.2.22.tgz
An NBD is essentially "a long pair of wires". It makes a remote
block device such as a hard disk on another computer appear local.
The ENBD is a development of Pavel Machek's kernel driver that has
been hardened for use in an industrial setting. It has numerous
features, such as redundant connections, block journalling,
automatic reconnects, internal failover and recovery, watchdog
guardians, and more, that are designed to "harden" it for use as a
remote part of a raid array. It will make its connections over SSL
channels if asked nicely by the truly paranoid. It's not hit by
32 bit size limitations.
I'd be grateful for comments. Initial reports from the outsiders
who've been trying it since the code was released have surprised me
with their lack of problems.
The code consists of server daemons, client daemons, and a kernel
module. And man pages! Run make test to get a free demo.

Subject: Aegis 3.22 - a project change supervisor
Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 17:58:30 GMT
Reply-To: Peter Miller <millerp@canb.auug.org.au>
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce that Aegis 3.22 is now available.
Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management
system. It provides a framework within which a team of developers
may work on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis
coordinates integrating these changes back into the master source
of the program, with as little disruption as possible.
You are invited to visit
http://www.canb.auug.org.au/~millerp/aegis/
for a more complete description of what Aegis is, and access to
the download files.
For information about what new features are available in this
release, please see the README file available at the above site.
Regards
