dffingerd is a finger daemon designed to run chroot()ed under a
nonroot uid. It reads all its data from a cdb which will be created by
dffingerd-conf. It does its interfacing to the network via
tcpserver/ucspi-tcp and logs to stderr. dffingerd is designed to run
supervised by daemontools and feed its output to multilog, but can be
used even with plain inetd. Running chrooted, dffingerd has only the
ability to read its data from a single file, data.cdb. It is designd
to send out only exact the data the administrator wants to be given
out and to be free of security-critical bugs. By using a cdb,
dffingerd scales very well. It can handle tens of thousands of
different users without degenerating preformance.

You can find out more about dffingerd and download it at
http://rc23.cx/dffingerd.html.

Subject: upm - a linux system admin tool for large scale installations
Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 20:35:55 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am please to announce the first public release of upm, the universal
package manager, a systemadministration tool written in perl that helps
you cope with large scale linux installations.

Availability:
- -------------
HTTP: http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~krienke/ftp/unix/upm/current/

Current state:
- --------------
Full usable for all SuSE Linux systems. With little coding usable as
well for all other rpm based linux distributions.

Description:
- ------------
If you have to administer a lot (10, 100, ...) of linux workstations
you face the problem to keep all these boxes up to date as far as eg
security patches, new software versions etc are concerned. Using upm
this task will become really fun for you. For example installing a new
version of eg KDE on all of your hosts can be done fully
automatically. All you have to do is to provide the packages at one
central point.

- From the README:
....
upm is the Universal Package Manager. Its goal is to help you
administer large scale installations with many (linux) hosts. This
way its purpose is quite similar like cfengine, but it uses a very different
approach, that is more suitable for todays Unix installations that are
usually all package (eg. RPM-package) based. The concept of cfengine is
eg unsuitable for automatically installing new software releases on a bunch
of hosts that use the package concept because it has no knowledge about
packages and so is likely to break the package concept. upm in turn will do
everything only by manipulating packages. upm can basically deal with
any kind of packages like RPM, DEB, etc, allthough currently there is
only code for RPM packages.
Upm allows you to keep a bunch of packages in a central point and, by
running it on all your systems, to upgrade all your systems
automatically. All that is needed is an NFS-mount for upm so that it can
find the packages and its config file. Both are kept in one directory hierachy,
so you only need one NFS mount. You can as well use an existing one of course.

                Rencontre technique mensuelle
                =============================

Sujet : La transition de NT à Linux
Quand : le mercredi 10 mai 2000 à 19:00 (20000510T1900)
Où : École Polytechnique de Montréal, salle A-416
Web : http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html

        --------------------------------------------------------

                Monthly Technical Meeting
                =========================

Subject:
When: Wednesday May 10, 2000 at 19:00 (20000510T1900)
Where: École Polytechnique de Montréal, room A-416
Web: http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html

Marc Vincent, Jean-François Guay, and Jacques Gélinas will present a
new tool for porting a complete NT server configuration to a Linux
server. This greatly eases the (unavoidable) transition from NT
servers to Linux servers.

Our monthly technical meetings are free and open to all. They are
generally held on the second Wednesday of each month, except in July
and August. They are an opportunity to discuss the latest news in
the Linux world, establish contacts, and listen to a technical
presentation on a Linux and open software related subject. They are
often held at École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Subject: yawl-0.2 - word list package for game programmers
Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 20:59:43 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing the release of the newest version (0.2) of the "yawl" (Yet Another
Word List).

This package contains the most comprehensive word list in electronic
form available for any OS, with over 263,000 carefully researched
words. The word list is primarily based on the Public Domain "ENABLE2K"
(Enhanced North American Benchmark LExicon) maintained by the author
and his colleague, Alan Beale.

This is a list for word gamers. While not targeted specifically at the
Scrabble community, it is usable as a reference list for tournament play.

Quoting from the package's README,

This new version of the YAWL package now includes two simple anagramming
utilities. They are interesting and useful in their own right, but
their true purpose is to inspire all the Linux word gamers and coders
out there to invent and create... word games, using the YAWL list,
of course. It would truly be nice to see a successor to Scrabble -
a new generation word game with strategic depth, a word game with some
of the sheer crystalline beauty of chess and the sheer profundity
of Go, a word game rewarding artistic play rather than dry list
memorization, a word game for those who truly love the richness of
the English language and revel in its peculiar permutations, a word
game that will take the gaming community by storm, a word game that
will invade living rooms all across the civilized world, in short,
a word game fated to run on millions of Linux machines.

Title: Yet Another Word List (YAWL)
Version: 0.2
Entered-date: 2000-04-28
Description: This is a comprehensive "word game" word list for UNIX/Linux. It
is a superset of the author's ENABLE list, the "OSW", and
various lists researched by the author's colleague, Alan
Beale. At 263,533 words, it is the largest list of its
kind, suitable for use in all manners of crossword-type
board games and word construction games, as well as for a
spell checker dictionary. The YAWL package now includes
two anagramming utilities (supplied as source code,
              handled by the included Makefile).

From: Hakan Ardo <hakan@debian.org>
Subject: HTMLView 0.7 - make web interfaces to relational SQL databases
Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 20:56:30 GMT
Reply-To: hakan@debian.org

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

It's finaly here! The now so long promised new release of HTMLView,
0.7. I beleave that I've included all the patches I've recieved
so far, but if you've sent me something and it's not here, please let
me know. Thankyou all for spending your time on HTMLView.

HTMLView is a set of modules to handle relational SQL databases
through a DBI interface and create web user interfaces to them. Among
it's features are the possibility to handle relations in the same
manner as fields and it is easily extended with additional field or
relation specifications as well as custom editors and viewers.

HTMLView contains a query language based on SQL, but extended to allow
easy inclusion of relations in the queries. Say you have a Users
table with an N2N relation, called grp, to a Groups table you can select
users from the Users table based on the name field in the Groups
table by selecting on grp->name (eg "grp->name = 'sudo'" would match
all users belonging to the group named sudo while "grp->gid = 27" would
match all users belonging to the group with gid 27).

There is also a fmt language used to specify how the data in a post
or a set of posts should be presented. It works in a template like way
with a html like format, and it can be specified on a PostSet, Post or
Relation/Field level.

It's most frequent use is that it allows you to write a fmt file and
in it place a "<node>...</node>" construct, which will repeat the
"..." part for every post that's supposed to be viewed. It can contain
"<fld name>" tags which will be replaced by the fld (field or relation)
named name. It's also possible to specify how that data in an fld
should be viewed by instead using the "<fmt name>...</fmt>" where
"..." is a new fmt string used to view the fld. This is especially
useful for relations as it allows you to specify exactly how the
related posts should be presented.

It's also possible to insert perl code that's executed using
"<perl>...</perl>" constructs. Se the README.fmt file for a complete
description of the language.

News in this version is:

 * Added a Date field fld.
 * Added patch from "Eric E. Coe" <ecoe@reportweb.com> that makes
CGIListView work even when your id column is not named id.
 * Added a new typed called Tree for easy creation of tree structure
   datatypes.
 * Anders Westrup <anders@barbanet.com> added a Table::count method

From: David Sugar <dyfet@home.sys>
Subject: ACS 0.5.7 release; Bayonne and ACS join GNU project
Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 21:04:00 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I originally started the ACS project as a GPL licensed multi-line voice
telephony server, with the goal to be the most flexible and advanced
telephony voice messaging server available. While this project has
yet to fully achieve this goal, ACS does enable one to deploy usable
voice response solutions today using GNU/Linux and hardware from
either Quicknet, Voicetronix, or Pika technologies.

ACS evolved over time without clear enough direction, and I found it to
be lacking in several key respects. Initially I started a re-write of
the ACS code base. In the process the package was redesigned with a
different and broader set of goals. This work has become known as the
Bayonne Package. Bayonne, and by extension, ACS, has became a package in
the GNU project as of May 1st. This action occurred concurrently with the
founding of the GNUCOMM, the Telecom project, to bring immediate telephony
functionality to the GNU project.

The current release of ACS is 0.5.7, and is being made immediately
available as a GNU package. This release is currently available for
download from Voxilla (http://www.voxilla.org/pub/acs) and SourceForge
(http://sourceforge.net/project/filelist.php?group_id=3630). ACS is also
available from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bayonne and associated mirrors.

Bayonne is still in formative development. Bayonne has been made
available through anonymous cvs access from subversions.gnu.org under
the module name "bayonne". At some point in the near future cvs
"snapshot" distributions of Bayonne will become available for early
testing under GNU/Linux. The first complete release of Bayonne will
be referred to as Bayonne 0.6.0, and will at that point in time
or shortly thereafter depreciate the ACS code base.

Some have asked why the package name was changed. I felt there
are several reasons for doing this. First, I have received numerous
complaints over the use of the name ACS in that it is similar to Al's
Circuit Simulator and several other packages. Also, I had originally
wanted a name that was more than a 3 letter acronym. Bayonne is taken
from the name of the Bayonne "bridge", and represents the idea of this
package as a bridge between the computer and telephony worlds. Finally, I
wanted to bring across the idea that Bayonne is different than a "1.x" or
"2.0" derived release of ACS.

Further information about Bayonne may be found from http://www.bayonne.cx.
A new home page will also appear for Bayonne on gnu.org shortly. While
Bayonne is meant to offer a superset of ACS features and functionality,
it does so in a very different and much more modular fashion. Bayonne
will also introduce call bridging and TDM bus functionality and will offer a
bridge between the worlds of analog, digital, and IP based telephony.

As the GNU maintainer of Bayonne, I welcome all suggestions and comments
from those interested in free telephony, and I may be reached directly
through e-mail as dyfet@ostel.com. I also fully welcome additional
contributors to the Bayonne project and and would be quite happy in
helping others start their own free telephony related packages and
projects.
