Subject: Magicfilter 2, release beta 1

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Last millenia, I took over maintenance of magicfilter from H Peter
Anvin, and went off to do a few little tweaks on it. I thought ``I'll
put in a nice menuing configuration systems, and release an intermediate
release'', but that turned out to be tedious, so I decided I'd get
magicfilter out of the file-type matching business and use libfile
instead, then I'd write the menuing configuration system. Well, that
got done, but the menuing configuration system still looked difficult,
so I looked at the filters and decided to redo them so that most of the
conversion logic was kept in a separate configuration file. Okay, so
far so good. Well, this didn't integrate very well with the old
processing code, and a lot of that code wasn't applicable to the
filtration rules I'd compiled out of the old magicfilter filters, so I
redid them. And then I converted my Linux distribution to a BSD tool
base, so GNU autoconfigure stopped working and I had to reinvent that
wheel. And then my firstborn child was born and life as I knew it
ceased to exist, so here it is April 2000 and there's STILL no menuing
configuration system, but magicfilter works.
Magicfilter 2, a completely rewritten version of magicfilter built on
the bones of magicfilter 1.3, is now available for the brave at
http://www.pell.chi.il.us/~orc/Code/magicfilter/magicfilter.tgz
(or http://www.pell.chi.il.us/~orc/Code/magicfilter/magicfilter-2b1
to look at the objects)
It features:
* file(1) style pattern matching, courtesy of libfile (included)
* it uses m4 to generate the filtration maps, instead of cpp
* there are two styles of filters; the new style, where the filters
for specific printer types are simple m4 include files that define
a few things for the printer, or the ``traditional'' style where
the filters are closer, but not completely like, the old magicfilter
filters.
* an autoconfig clone instead of autoconfig, which may make it a bit
more portable across Unix platforms.
* BSD-style license (sans advertising clause) instead of GPL.
It's still missing some of the functionality of magicfilter 1.2; I'm
interesting in knowing just what of this functionality is actually used
before putting it in.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Blackhome-0.2.4: a blackbox WM theme (un)installer and desktop design tool
for integrating apps and themes.
Requirements: blackbox (untested with 0.49.x; 0.50.2 up - tested to
0.51.3.1); GNU bash.
NEW: Support for the bashish terminal theme manager is provided via the
blackhome res ourceFiledEditor.
Blackhome provides a way to use blackbox themes with associated default
resource file sets for customisation of applications; each theme has its
own
specific application resources, extending the theme concept to allow
individual applications to be 'themed'.
A utility is included to enable easy installation of blackbox themes and
images/pixmaps; uninstallation of these is supported via menu buttons.
Default resource files for some commonly-used applications are generated
automatically by the install utility; these can be customised to taste.
The generation of X applications' resource files for themes can be easily
modified to enable more applications to be supported, or for unwanted
support to be removed.
Two themes are provided as examples, 'alpha 'and 'omega'.

Connect 0.5.0 - connection resource manager
Homepage: http://www.methods.co.nz/connect
Download: See homepage.
Connect is a generic connection manager for use in situations
requiring management of multiple, heterogeneous, connection oriented
resources. The initial motivation for connect was the need for a PPP
dial-up connection manager for small local area networks.
Connect's client/server architecture allows connections to be managed
locally or remotely over a TCP/IP network. The package includes a
Linux server and a Linux client. A Windows 95/98/NT client is also
available.
Connect has been released under the GPL and is currently only
available as source code release.

The improved and ported netkit-ftp-0.16 (the same source will compile under
Linux and Windows as well) I announced a few weeks ago will follow the
original netkit-ftp versioning scheme now to make things less confusing. The

(where you can find the Windows binaries, too) or directly by
http://home.wtal.de/ib/download/ftp-0.16.1.tar.gz
The changes from 0.16 to 0.16.1 are:
Make it compile and run under Win32.
EBCDIC type file transfers.
Improved remote system recognition.
Confirm dialog only regards `y', `Y' and `\n' as `yes'.
Minor changes, especially on messages, "status" and "type" command.
Updated man page.

Announcing Emacspeak-12.0 (GoldenDog)
-------------------------------------
For Immediate Release:
San Jose, Calif., (May 1, 2000)
Emacspeak-2000++: Opening The Gates To A Speech-Enabled Semantic WWW
--Zero cost of ownership makes priceless software affordable!
Emacspeak Inc (NASDOG: ESPK)
- - --http://emacspeak.sourceforge.net-- announces immediate
world-wide availability of Emacspeak 12.0 --a powerful audio
desktop for leveraging today's evolving semantic WWW.
What Is It?
- - -----------
Emacspeak is a fully functional audio desktop that provides
complete eyes-free access to all major 32 and 64 bit operating
environments. By seamlessly blending all aspects of the Internet
such as Web-surfing and electronic messaging into the audio
desktop, Emacspeak enables speech access to local and remote
information with a consistent and well-integrated user
interface. A rich suite of task-oriented speech-enabled tools
provides efficient speech-enabled access to the evolving semantic
WWW. With support for the freely downloadable IBM ViaVoice
Outloud speech synthesis engine, Emacspeak now turns Linux into
the first zero-cost Internet access solution for blind and
visually impaired users.
Code Name Note:
- - ---------------
After 10 years of loyal service, Aster Labrador retired from
active duty as a guide-dog on November 29, 1999. She agreed to
stay on as Emacspeak's press contact for the immediate future,
but gave up the marketing role after just one week --she passed
away peacefully December 5, 1999. this release is code named
GoldenDog to welcome Hubbell (Bubbles) Labrador, a frisky young
yellow Labrador who stepped into Aster's shoes earlier this year.
Major Enhancements:
- - -------------------
1. Task-oriented web tools to exploit the evolving semantic WWW.
2. Further enhancements to single-click web-search.
3. Speech-enabled access to CVS.
4. Speech-enabled access to the new Java debugger.
5. RPM package to allow single click installation.
See the NEWS file for additional details. The Emacspeak source
distribution now includes a structured FAQ list designed to introduce
new and old users to the Emacspeak environment.
Opening Doors To A Windows-Free 2000:
- - -------------------------------------
Emacspeak is now voluntarily bundled with all major Linux
distributions. Extensive studies have shown that users consider
Emacspeak to be absolutely priceless. Thanks to this wide-spread
user demand, the present version is being made available at the
same zero cost as earlier releases. At the same time,
Emacspeak-2000 continues to innovate in the area of speech
interaction and carries forward the well-established Open Source
tradition of introducing user interface features that eventually
show up in commercial user environments. On this theme, when once
challenged by a proponent of a crash-prone but well-marketed
windowing system with the assertion "Emacs is a system from the
70's", the creator of Emacspeak expressed surprize at the unusual
candor manifest in the assertion that it would take popular
idiot-proof interfaces until the year 2070 to catch up to where
the Emacspeak audio desktop is today. Upon hearing this, the said
proponent of the crash-prone system turned blue in the face
(screen), crashed to the floor and refused to get booted (ever again).
Industry experts welcomed this refreshing breath of Courage
Certainty and Clarity (CCC) at a time when users are reeling from
the Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) unleashed by complex
software systems backed by even more convoluted press releases.
Independent Test Results:
- - -------------------------
Independent test results have proven that unlike some modern
software, Emacspeak can be easily uninstalled without adversely
affecting the continued performance of the computer. These same
tests also revealed that once uninstalled, the user stopped
functioning altogether. Speaking with Aster Labrador, the
creator of Emacspeak once pointed out that these results
re-emphasize the user-centric design of Emacspeak; "It is the
user --and not the computer-- that stops functioning when
Emacspeak is uninstalled!".
Note from Aster and Bubbles:
(UnDoctored Videos Inc. is currently looking for volunteers to
star in a video demonstrating such complete user failure).
History:
- - --------
Emacspeak-12.0 --code named GoldenDog-- leverages the evolving
sematnic WWW to provide task-oriented speech access to electronic
information on the Internet. Emacspeak-11.0 --code named Aster--
goes the final step in making Linux a zero-cost Internet access
solution for blind and visually impaired users. Emacspeak-10.0
- - --(AKA Emacspeak-2000) code named WonderDog-- was the last in a
series of award-winning software releases designed to make
eyes-free computing a productive and pleasurable
experience. Emacspeak-9.0 --(AKA Emacspeak 99) code named
BlackLab-- continued to innovate in the areas of speech
interaction and interactive accessibility. Emacspeak-8.0 --(AKA
Emacspeak-98++) code named BlackDog-- was a major upgrade to the
speech output extension to Emacs.
Emacspeak-95 (code named Illinois) was released as OpenSource on
the Internet in May 1995 as the first complete speech interface
to UNIX workstations. The subsequent release, Emacspeak-96 (code
named Egypt) made available in May 1996 provided significant
enhancements to the interface. Emacspeak-97 (Tennessee) went
further in providing a true audio desktop. Emacspeak-98
integrated Internetworking into all aspects of the audio desktop
to provide the first fully interactive speech-enabled WebTop.
Obtaining Emacspeak: -------------------- Emacspeak can be
downloaded from sourceforge via HTTP or FTP:
http://emacspeak.sourceforge.net
ftp://emacspeak.sourceforge.net/pub/emacspeak You can visit
Emacspeak on the WWW at
http://cs.cornell.edu/home/raman/emacspeak (Cornell) --You
can also pick up emacspeak via anonymous ftp from
ftp://ftp.cs.cornell.edu/pub/raman/emacspeak/.
Note that in my experience the the sourceforge site is more
reliable than the Cornell site due to the operating system
each site has chosen to run.
You can subscribe to the emacspeak mailing list
emacspeak@cs.vassar.edu by sending mail to the list request
address emacspeak-request@cs.vassar.edu.
About Emacspeak:
- - ----------------
Based at Cornell (NY) http://cs.cornell.edu/home/raman --home to
Auditory User Interfaces (AUI) on the WWW-- Emacspeak is mirrored
world-wide by an international netwrok of software archives and
bundled voluntarily with all major Linux distributions. On

From: "Christopher Molnar" <molnarc@earthlink.net>
Subject: KDE Alpha Binaries available 2000-04-30
Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 20:29:38 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
A new version of the KDE ALPHA binaries are available
at nebsllc.com. Please read the README file in the
same directory. Just in case you missed it "READ THE README" prior to
doing anything!
These binaries are built from CVS as of 30 Apr
2000 at 1:00pm Eastern Standard Time (-0500).
Please bring all install questions to the un-official
kde-alpha list at kde-alpha-request@nebsllc.com.
Qt version 2.1.0 has been released. These binaries where built with the
release package. You can get it here, or you can get it elsewhere, but
you will need to upgrade. DEVELOPERS: the new QTDIR is /usr/lib/qt2.
When you upgrade plese consider copying your old /opt/kde2 to an
/opt/kde2.old directory and then installing. This way you have something
to go back to.
These files are available via ftp from:
ftp://ftp.nebsllc.com/kde2/current
or via http at:
http://www.nebsllc.com (follow links for kde2 Alpha
binaries)
You will also be able to find these at (after a few days):
http://www.htw-dresden.de/~s2697
The installs have been tested by me on a Mandrake 7.0
machine. They have also been reported to work on all
other distributions.
The rpm's are built with Mandrake 7.0. If you are not running the
most recent version of rpm, I would suggest
an upgrade. You will need to do a --force and a --nodeps on the rpm
installs.
If you are running prior Alpha's I highly recommend you
update. There are a lot of fixes and some structural
changes in the packages.
You will also find Source tar.gz's in the same
directory.
