Subject: SuckMT 0.50 -- a Multi-Threaded suck replacement.
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 15:04:31 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
This is to announce the release of SuckMT-0.50
PREFACE
=======
Maintainer - Niels Basjes (suckmt@basjes.nl)
LOCATION
========
Visit http://go.to/suckmt to download the latest version (currently 0.50).
INTRODUCTION
============
The suck package (http://home.att.net/~bobyetman/index.html) for getting a
small NNTP feed has one drawback: because it is single threaded it doesn't
use my modem line optimally. Normal suck doesn't use more than approx 2KB/s
when my modem can do approx 5KB/s. This means more phone costs than I would
like. It turns out that running two instances of suck makes more use of my
available bandwidth so I figured that a multithreaded implementation should
reduce the required connect time.
SuckMT is a multithreaded re-implementation of the features of suck I
actually use.
Note that SuckMT has absolutely no source in common with suck.
FEATURES
========
SuckMT has the same basic functionality as suck: get news messages for
local reposting. It also includes Kill and Keep headers and automatic
logging of when and how often a specific header was matched. This way you
can easily determine which kill rules have become obsolete. I've been using
SuckMT for the last few months and I've solved as far as I can tell all the
bugs (I also checked the code with purify) in the current set of features.
The code has been compiled and tested on SuSE Linux 6.1, Redhat Linux 6.0
and Windows NT 4.0 using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (This is what I call
writing portable code).
MAJOR CHANGES IN VERSION 0.50
=============================
- - You can check the progress when you do ps from a shell.
- - Added Restart file so it is safe to make the temp dir empty after an
aborted download session.
- - Added the headername "ArticleBody" can be used to create kill/keep rules
that check for the actual article content.
- - Now also available as RPM and SRPM files.
LICENSE
=======
GNU Public License.
FEEDBACK
========
If you have any bugs, comments, remarks or great ideas about new features
for suckmt to hesitate to mail me. If you actually use the software I would
also like to get a message.
Niels.

much about Linux, buy Phat Linux v3.2! Don't accept any imitations,
get the real thing!
In late 1998, Phat Linux created a simple, easy to use Linux operating
system that ran on a Windows 95/98 partition. Since then, many have
tried to replicate what Phat Linux has done. However, Phat Linux
remains the leading Linux distribution that runs on a Windows partition
because of the support and dedication to the Linux operating system.
Phat Linux v3.2 comes with lots of popular software, including KDE,

From: sergio@titan.demon.co.uk (Sergio Masci)
Subject: COMMERCIAL: XEBOT v0.7.0 Visual application builder and multiplatform execution environment
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 14:57:12 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
XEBOT v0.7.0
Lisence type: commercial but free evaluation version available for download
Description
Visual application builder and multiplatform execution environment
Changes since v0.5.00
Added new tutorial that shows how to build a virtual calculator from
scratch, add code to it and debug it (set break points, single step
through source statements and watch vairables) using the builtin IDE.
Added facility to record and playback mouse and keyboard events.
This will make remote support easier since the user can now show
developers what they are doing if they have problems, and the
developers can respond to users questions visually.
Added new template window mode so that objects can be copied from
the template window to the work window without the need to enter and
exit copy mode.
Added new option in control editor dialog that allows quick access
to the controls context (without the need to user a seperate dialog)
Changes since v0.4.02
Added a new interactive debug mode which allows a developer to set break
points, single step XPE source code, view the object context ('this'),
watch variables, manually modify variables (while the code is being
traced), view the execution path to the current break point, and easily
navigate functions and methods in the execution path.
the SVGALIB version is now also available from the same site.
Features
* Extremely powerful visual editing interface that allows easy editing
across files using multiple overlapping windows. The graphics objects
drawn and edited using the interface have built in intelligence and react
to the mouse and each other so as to maximize user productivity and
reduce tedious repetitive setup sequences (see the IPAD sub app
features for more information on the visual edit capabilities available to
the developer).
* The self contained execution environment of the multiplatform
IPAD-Pro core which allows apps built using XEBOT to:
o run directly on systems without GUI support (e.g. MSDOS or
DRDOS)
o replace the native GUI where it is considered bloated or
unpredictable.
o run on all supported platforms without the usual porting
overheads. This lets the developer design the app once and use it
through the same interface on many platforms.
* Fast prototyping of partial designs allows icremental interactive
development of complex specifications between developers and users,
and greatly accelerates time to market.
o The underlying IPAD-Pro core manages many form and dialog
functions which other GUIs normally require the app take
responsibility for.
o The drag and drop capability of the XEBOT interface lets forms
and dialogs be quickly built from templates.
o The control property editor and code editor of the XEBOT
interface lets forms and dialogs be quickly and easily tailored.
o The concise coding model allows functionality to be quickly and
easily added to controls.
* App development and maintenance is greatly simplified by:
o The ability to directly add concise code to controls on a form or
dialog which does not need to intercept and decode GUI event
messages.
o The ability to directly set or inspect context variables belonging to
controls (including forms and dialogs).
o The ability of controls on a form or dialog to directly interact with
each other and the user in response to events without the need to
build and send special messages between the communicating
components.
o The sophisticated API which allows complex data gathering,
validation and mapping between the IPAD-Pro core and the visual
components of the app (such as buttons, text entry fields, check
boxes etc.) There is no need to provide hundreds of API defined
functions and buffers just to collect data and perform validation
from myriad's of points within the code.
o Code module support allowing components to encapsulate data
and functionality.
* Supports hot swap dynamic linking of externally compiled modules
allowing in situ upgrades. This is of particular value when the app is part
of a monitoring or control process since there is no need to reboot the
system or restart the IPAD-Pro core.
* External code (code written in C, C++ and assembler which is linked in
at run time) can access form or dialog controls simply by name if
required, with no need for the external code to be given a list of specific
control IDs by the app or for it to manage such a list (e.g. when
reporting errors the external code can simply ask for the ID of the
message box with the name "error_messages" and write to it). This also
applies to code belonging to other controls or modules.
Limitations
How XEBOT differs from IPAD-Pro or why you can't build ZMech
from XEBOT.
XEBOT does not allow you to do various things which are essential
when building an IPAD-Pro sub app (this is different from a normal
app such as the calculator example given below). One of them is the
ability to create new code objects. You can make a copy of an existing
code object and change some of its properties but you cannot change the
code objects fundamental properties, you need IPAD-Pro to do that.
Normally sub apps do not allow code objects to be exported, but in the
case of XEBOT and ZMech the code objects are exportable so that the
developer can get a feel for what's going on in a complete sub app and
use these as templates for building his/her own sub app. Having changed
the exported code objects, you cannot import them again in the hope of
generating a new sub app.
So how do you customize ZMech using XEBOT?
By using the ZMech enabled version of XEBOT (xebot_tmpl) available
from the ZMech distribution web page. Simply run ZMech, open a new
window, load xebot_tmpl into it and away you go.
Examples
xebot_base - XEBOT interface (defined using xebot)
This is part of the standard XEBOT distribution package.
This is the complete XEBOT interface. Modifying this lets you tailor
XEBOT itself. From it you would normally build your customized
xebot_tmpl
xebot_tmpl - XEBOT control templates
This is part of the standard XEBOT distribution package.
This is what you would normally build an app from. It is a sub set of
xebot_base. To use it simply run XEBOT, open a window, load
xebot_tmpl into it, open another window and copy the controls from the
template to your work sheet. For more details look at some of the xebot
demos.
xebot_demo - boiler temperature monitor
This is part of the standard XEBOT distribution package.
calc - fully functional virtual calculator
This is a proper app that runs in the self contained execution
environment of IPAD-Pro
XEBOT is currently available for Linux 2.0.x (Intel), Solaris 2.5
(SPARC), OS/2, MS Windows (NT, 95, 98 and 3.1) and MSDOS.
XEBOT can be obtained from:
http://www.xcprod.com/titan
Animated demos showing user / GUI interaction, state machine traces
and dialog building can be obtained from:
http://www.xcprod.com/titan/DEMO
(BEWARE: some demos seem to run slowly when viewed using
some versions of Internet Explorer)
