I am pleased to announce that Aegis 3.21 is now available.

Aegis is a transaction-based software configuration management system.
It provides a framework within which a team of developers may work
on many changes to a program independently, and Aegis coordinates
integrating these changes back into the master source of the program,
with as little disruption as possible.

You are invited to visit
        http://www.canb.auug.org.au/~millerp/aegis/
for a more complete description of what Aegis is, and access to the
download files.

For information about what new features are available in this release,
please see the README file available at the above site.

Linux. fancylogin can do everything your old login program can do, e.g.
handling shadowed passwd files, user-time-terminals/network verification
as done with HP-UX login and it adds a lot of capabilities for logging.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Linux Central now offering bootable network cards
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 14:30:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Linux Central, the leading provider of Linux products on the web,
has signed an agreement to distribute diskless networking
products from market leader DisklessWorkstations.com.

The Power of the X-Windows System and low cost workstations
can simplify your environment while providing all of the
functionality of conventional computing architectures. When
other vendors are deploying thin client solutions, an often
overlooked opportunity is to utilize a Linux environment with
diskless X-Windows workstations.

These bootable network cards work great with the LTSP
software (Linux Terminal Server Project) http://ltsp.org.
This software is what you use on Linux to setup and
maintain the diskless workstation. It provides the Linux
kernel and the root filesystem that the workstation mounts.
And, it eventually will include all of the management tools
to monitor and maintain the workstations. The Linux
Terminal Server Project is setting the standard for diskless
workstations in a Linux environment.

Diskless Linux Workstations provide the following benefits:
- --Low cost per seat.
- --Very low end-user maintenance.
- --Fully graphical user environment.
- --Compatibility with popular programs such as WordPerfect,
Oracle, Informix, StarOffice, Applixware and many others.
- --Choice of Window managers/Graphical environments
includes: Gnome, KDE, FVWM, Motif, Enlightenment
   and more.

Additional information on the complete line of diskless
workstations can be found at:
http://DisklessWorkstations.com.

Purchasing information can be found at:

Issue #13 a.k.a. "Birthday release" of
Georg's Brave GNU World, the monthly GNU
                forum has been released.
                                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

Although this happens to be my birthday I took the time to put
issue #13 of the "Brave GNU World" column online. So I guess one
could also dub it the "Birthday release." :-)

The column can - as usual - be found on the GNU Webpage and its
mirrors. Otherwise just follow the links at the end of this posting.

Georg's Brave GNU World is a monthly column which is being released
simultaneously in five languages (English, German, French, Japanese
and Spanish) on the web and printed in the German "Linux-Magazin" as
well as the "Linux Magazine France." This makes it the monthly column
with the widest distribution worldwide as far as I know.

If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 2
mails a month).

The 13th issue covers the following topics:

 * Gcompte (managing your personal finances)

 * Scwm (an extremely extensible window manager)

 * eev (yet another way to use your Emacs)

 * Pliant (a new programming language framework and system)

 * Worldwide Botanical Database
                        (a "Free Science" type project)

This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"

This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so donīt hesitate to contact me if your project is under the
GPL/LGPL and youīd like to see it introduced here.

ACV - ASYNCHRONOUS COPY AND VERIFY
- --- ----------------------------

ACV is a utility intended for use when copying data where there is
a mismatch between the rate at which the source can provide data
and the rate at which the consumer can swallow it, such that this
has a significant performance affect.

A typical example is tar-ing and gzip-ing to a streaming tape
drive on a machine where the tape drive can swallow data much
faster than the machine can execute tar/gzip. In this situation,
the tape will have to stop and rewind regularly.

ACV copies data via a large internal buffer. It is always prepared
to read, provided that there is free space in the buffer. However,
it does not start writing until the amount of data in the buffer
reaches a set level. It will then write data continuously until
the buffer is emptied (and will continue to read in the meantime).

In addition, provided that the output is not standard output,
acv can re-read the output, and compare checksums, to verify that
the data was correcly written. It uses the same algorithm as the
sum command, and can handle the situation where the output does
not preserve exact file lengths.

HI everybody,

The Worcester Linux Users' Group (WLUG) will be holding its monthly meeting on
Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall (located in Salisbury
Labs) on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA, USA. Directions and more details can
be found on the WLUG web site:

        http://www.wlug.org

At this meeting, our featured guest speaker will be Virginia Caple from Applix,
Inc. Virginia will be speaking about Applixware Office for Linux, which is a
suite of office productivity software containing spreadsheet, work processing,
graphics, presentation, e-mail, and more! For more information about this
software, please check the Applix website:

        http://www.applix.com/applixware/linux/prodover.cfm

After the main presentation, there will be some Linux items available at the
no-cost raffle. A Q/A session for technical support questions will then
follow.

There will be light refreshments served at the meeting. A small donation of
around $3 - $5 is requested to help defray the cost of the refreshments.

After the meeting, many of us go out for pizza and beer at a local restaurant.
All meeting attendees are welcome to join us at the restaurant after the
meeting.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Andy

Subject: /proc/config patch for kernel 2.2.13 (update)
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 15:02:52 GMT
Reply-To: ptb@it.uc3m.es

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Listing kernel compile-time configuration via /proc/config
     ==========================================================

/proc/config patch (update) for kernel 2.2.*

     Proconfig 0.8.2 (2.2.13)

     Changes

     0.8.2 - added on/off switch via echo -n "0" >/proc/config
(security and saves about 1K temporarily while off).
integrated CONFIG_* search with kernel mkdep.c

0.8.1 - minor cosmetic buglet fixed.
replaced shell scripts by C programs.
               unified 2.3.44 and 2.2.13 config.c code
issued initial patch (0.9) for 2.3.44

     Download: ftp://oboe.it.uc3m.es/pub/Programs/proconfig-0.8.2.tgz
     Homepage: http://www.it.uc3m.es/~ptb/proconfig/

I'll update the 2.3.44 patch shortly: 0.9.2 won't be announced as
     people here aren't following 2.3.*.

     Repeat of original announcement:
     --------------------------------

I've released a comprehensive patch to support listing the kernel
compilation options via /proc/config. It's at the addresses below.
This makes kernel image administration easy if you compile a lot of
kernels or admin a lot of machines, as I do.

The patch configures by default as a tiny kernel rump of 3-5K, plus
an external module that you load once and then throw away again.
The latter converts the kernel 'print data to more readable format.
It's not a compressed string in there, by the way. There's a real
binary data structure implanted into the kernel.

But you can configure any way you like. 0 modules (all in kernel),
kernel 'print plus temporary module, two modules, one module ...
If you want to compile it all in it probably costs 5-7K.

The patch integrates with the kernel Makefiles, so it shows up
conveniently under make menuconfig and friends.
