"Linux Gazette...Making Linux just a little more fun!"
New feature: TALKBACKS!
Talkbacks offer a forum for readers, editors, and authors to discuss
articles and their topics. Look for a link to Talkbacks at the end of
every Linux Gazette article starting with the March issue.
(This does not include the columns--"The Mailbag", "News Bytes", "The
Answer Guy", "More 2-Cent Tips" and the Back Page--because these
consist of many unrelated topics in one article. We are currently
exploring what kind of discussion forum would be most appropriate for them.)
Linux Gazette is a freely available, WWW e-zine that includes short articles
giving tips and tricks, ideas and suggestions for customizing and running
Linux. It is a member of the Linux Documentation Project.

LUGWW project (http://lugww.counter.li.org/)
================================================================
The Linux User Groups WorldWide (short: LUGWW) pages can now be found
on the site as specified above.
Last months events:
- cleaned out incorrect URL's.
- grew approximatly with 20 new entries.
- Added 'regions' for Denmark, Spain and Russia.
(Thanks to the continued support of others.)
It is intended to be an up-to-date database of Linux User Groups (LUGs)
and various precautions are taken to keep the information 'fresh' and
usefull.
So you should propably visit the site in any of the following cases:
- Your are looking for a Local LUG.
- You want people to find your LUG.
- You are considering starting a LUG.
- Your LUG is not listed yet.
Please read the requirements (http://lugww.counter.li.org/requirements.html)
before adding a group to minimize overhead and the changes your addition
will be rejected.
The database still needs improvements in describing 'regions'.
The concept of reasons and how you can help adding the 'regions'
of your country can be found on: http://lugww.counter.li.org/regions.html
Currently there are about 350 LUGs listed.
May the source be with you,
Hugo.

Où : École Polytechnique de Montréal, salle (à confirmer) B-316.1
Web : http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html

Monthly Technical Meeting

Subject: Beowulf
When: Wednesday March 8, 2000 at 19:00 (20000308T1900)
Where: École Polytechnique de Montréal, room (to be confirmed) B-316.1
Web: http://www.linux-quebec.org/Rencontres.html
Benoît de Mulder will present Beowulf : quick history, configuration,
and applications in a professional or personal setting. (Based on
Linux, Beowulf enables one to relatively cheaply build supercomputers
using ordinary PCs and off-the-shelf components.) He will also talk
about Linux deployment in the implementation of high availability
systems, about problems generated by such configurations, and about
existing Linux solutions which enable their implementation.
Our monthly technical meetings are free and open to all. They are
generally held on the second Wednesday of each month, except in July
and August. They are an opportunity to discuss the latest news in
the Linux world, establish contacts, and listen to a technical
presentation on a Linux and open software related subject. They are
often held at École Polytechnique de Montréal.

For those late nights at the office, relaxing at home with family and

These Linux-lovers' cards were unveiled at the LinuxWorld Expo in New York

all waiting to be dealt in to your favorite game and fit neatly up most
regular-sized sleeves.
These playing cards are just the latest addition to LinuxMall.com's vast
array of Linux goodies. Be sure to check out the entire site; LinuxMall.com
has everything from beach towels and buttons to bumper stickers and "Born to

Oh, by the way, we've been known to sell software, too.

From: J.Anders@Informatik.TU-Chemnitz.DE (Dr. Joerg Anders)
Subject: Qt based note editor available
Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2000 12:37:17 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
A Qt based note editor on Linux (GPL, very beta) is ready:
http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~ja/noteedit/noteedit.html
Because it is a Qt program I plan to transform it into a KDE
application (if ther is enough interest).
Properties
==========
* insertion/deletion/modification of notes, rests, dotted notes, slured
notes, clefs, time signatures, key signatures on different staffs;
* building accords;
* playing on /dev/sequencer (if correctly configured) whereby:
o giving each staff a different voice;
o giving each staff a different channel;
o highlighting the played notes;
o setting midi tempo;
* saving an restoring the files. The file format is similarily to the
format of the music publication program (MUP):
http://www.arkkra.com
So you if you are a MUP user you have the possibility to convert
the files into Midi and Postscript.
Planned
=======
*More edit features: copy, past, block delete, undo, ...
*More music elements: beams, tuplets, repeat, ...
*export MusicTex
*export Midi
*import Midi
Conditions
==========
The program is tested on S.u.S.E.-Linux 6.2, Qt-1.44-62, and sound card
AWE-64. I used egcs-2.91.66.
You need the following packages:
* g++ compiler
* X11 (include and libraries)
* Qt (include and libraries)
recommended:
* LibKMid; see http://www.arrakis.es/~rlarrosa/libkmid.html
You can compile the program without LibKMid. But in this case an
#include /usr/src/linux/include/linux/soundcard.h
occurs which can cause a lot of machine/sound card depencies. Therefore if
your sound doesn't work and you are sure Midi works on your machine (you use
KMid successfully) then try compilation with LibKMid!
