Building Voices in Festival
Processes and issues in building speech synthesis voices
festvox-1.1-beta
Alan W Black and Kevin A. Lenzo
{awb,lenzo}@cs.cmu.edu
http://www.festvox.org
This is to announce the second public release of the festvox project.
The festvox project, based at Carnegie Mellon University, distributes
documentation, scripts and examples that should be sufficient for an
interested person to build their own synthetic voices in currently
supported languages or new languages in the University of Edinburgh's
Festival Speech Synthesis System. The quality of the result depends
much on the time and skill of the builder. For English it may be
possible to build a new voice in a couple of days work, a new language
may take months or years to build.
The release includes:
o Support for designing, recording and autolabelling diphone databases
o Support for designing, recording and autolabelling unit selection databases
o Building simple limited domain synthesis engines
o Support for building rule driven and data driven prosody models
o Lexicon and building letter to sound rule support
o Predefined scripts for building new US (and UK) English voices
o Example diphone and limited domain synthesis databases
Since the last release (Jan 1999) we have added better support for
generating scheme files from skeletons, clear walkthroughs for standard
tasks, as well as improving overall documentation and support.
The complete documentation in html, and in downloadable format including
the scripts and programs necessary to build new voices and example
databases is available from
http://www.festvox.org
The full distribution is packaged, including postscript and the
generated html, and is available from
http://www.festvox.org/festvox-1.1/festvox-1.1-beta.tar.gz
LICENCE
This documentation and related scripts is free software, distributed
under an X11-type licence (like Festival itself). No claims are made
by the authors of this work, Carnegie Mellon University (or the
University of Edinburgh), on the voices that you generate with the
scripts and techniques described within this distribution.
REQUIREMENTS
A Unix Machine (Linux. FreeBSD, Solaris etc) with working audio i/o:
although there is nothing inheritantly Unix about the scripts, no
attempt has yet been made about porting this to other platforms
Edinburgh University's Festival Speech Synthesis System and
The Edinburgh Speech Tools
This uses speech tools programs and festival itself at various
stages in builidng voices as well as (of course) for the final
voices. Festival and the Edinburgh Speech Tools are available from
http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival.html
or
http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/festival
It is recommended that you compile your own versions of these
as you will need the libraries and include files to build some
programs in festvox. Also some parts require support for
the clunits module which is not compiled in by default in the
standard distributions.
EMU Labeller
The University of Macquarie's Speech Hearing and Language Research
Centre distribute labelling tools for speech databases. We use it
here for viewing speech, as spectrograms, F0 contours, phone labels etc.
It is available from
http://www.shlrc.mq.edu.au/emu/
Other waveform labeller/viewers exist and you find them more convinient
to use but we include support for emulabel as it meets our requirements
and is freely available.
Patience and understanding
Building a new voice is a lot of work, and something will probably
go wrong which may require the repetition of some long boring and
tedious process. Even with lots of care a new voice still might
just not work. In distributing this document we hope to increase the
basic knowledge of synthesis out there and hopefully find people
who can improve on this making the processing easier and more reliable
in the future.
WARNING
This is not a pointy/clicky plug and play program to build new voices.
It is instructions with discussion on the problems and an attempt to
document the expertise we have gained in building other voices.
Although we have tried to automate the task as much as possible this
is no substitute for careful correction and understanding of the
processes involved. There are significant pointers into the
literature throughout the document that allow for more detailed study
and further reading.
However, this release does include complete simple walkthroughs of
scripts that can build voices in English with little more than
recording time, by people without knowledge of scheme programming or
speech technology, but the results will be better if you take time
to understand the underlying processes.
Also note there are still unwritten parts of the documentation,
new releases in the future with reduce such parts.
INSTALL
download http://www.festvox.org/festvox-1.1/festvox-1.1-beta.tar.gz
unpack its and see festvox/README for instructions for installation
and use.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Here's something I think (and hope) will be useful to practically everyone
who uses Linux.
This is the announcement of the first public release of mvgp and cpgp,
two commands for renaming and copying groups of files using a rule
specified by a pattern in the files' names to search for, and the
string with which to replace it.
For example, mvgp can be used to rename all files in a directory that
end in .htm to end in .html instead. Or if you find a directory with
236 files that have the word "linnix" somewhere in their names, and
you want to correct the misspellings, you can do it with a single mvgp
command:
mvgp linnix linux *
To find out more about mvgp and cpgp, and to download the distribution
archive, go to <http://jayts.cx> and click the "Downloads" link.

Subject: KSnuffle - network packet sniffer for KDE
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 23:00:44 GMT
Reply-To: mike@quaking.demon.co.uk
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
NOTE: This version fixes a big security hole in earlier versions. Anyone
using versions 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3 should upgrade!
KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:
* Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
* Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
* Multiple concurrent monitors
* Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
* Textual display of network traffic
* Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
* Parallel display of multiple load histograms
* Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
* Support for use by selected non-root users
In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP.
Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.
KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-0.4/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.

Version 0.3 alpha of the Open Source Audio Library Project
(OSALP) has been released. The OSALP is a C++ class library
designed to provide all the functionally one would need to add
audio capability to your application. It currently supports only
Linux but other UNIX platforms are planned.
With V 0.3 the audio file formats au, aiff, and aifc have been
added. Currently wav is still supported as well as mp3. For mp3
the choice of two encoders is given, Lame or Blade. Also mpg123
is used to read mp3s. The file formats are now implemented as
"plugable modules". They are separate shared object libraries and
are loaded dynamically. This means applications don't need to link
to them and the OSALP main library does not need to be recompiled
to add a new format. Further information can be found at the
OSALP home page at:
http://osalp.sourceforge.net
Thanks,
Bruce Forsberg

Subject: /proc/config patch for kernel 2.2.13
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 23:23:12 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
/proc/config patch for kernel 2.2.13
Proconfig 0.8
I've released a patch to support listing the kernel compilation
options via /proc/config. It's at the addresses below. This makes
kernel image administration easy if you compile a lot of kernels or
admin a lot of machines, as I do. The patch should work on any
2.2.* kernel.
The patch is designed to be configured as a tiny kernel footprint
of 3-5K, plus an external module that you load once and then throw
away again. The latter converts the kernel 'print data to more
readable format. It's not a compressed string in there, by the way.
There's a real binary data structure implanted into the kernel.
But you can configure the patch any way you like. 0 modules (all
in kernel), kernel 'print plus temporary module, two modules, one
module ... If you want to compile it all in it probably costs
5-7K.
The patch integrates with the kernel Makefiles, so it shows up
conveniently under make menuconfig and friends. I'll put out a
version for 2.3.46 shortly.

Changes 0.8: Initial public release. Works fine.
