Subject: NetStreamer 0.18 available: Stream live audio over the internet
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 23:07:04 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

NetStreamer offers the possibility to stream audio over the internet
using a 28k8 modem or faster. It offers a fancy radio-like frontend that
allows you to tune in on "radio programs" that are offered by a
NetStreamer Server, which is a kind of reflector that passes on audio
thet may be offered by several transmitters.

Currently NetStreamer 0.18 is available.

You can download the NetStreamer software from:

http://flits102-126.flits.rug.nl/~rolf/NetStreamer.html

NetStreamer 0.18 's major enhancement is that it allows to transmit both
8kHz en 16kHz at the same "frequency". Besides that, some bugs have
been fixed as well.

The software is distributed in source and binary form under GPL

Introduction to XML
Owen Synge

XML is a technology/standard that should have existed years ago. It is
stunningly simple, and widely applicable.

The history of XML will be explained first to give a solid understanding
of the reasons for associated standards such as XSL and DTD's. Then the
implications for the web and also UNIX programmers will be then covered.

This talk will not go into great depth on the specifics of XML, as like
any standard or language practical hands on experience is the only way
to understand the fine details. The general points will also hopefully
keep you all interested.

Unfortunately I have not used the available XML/XSL or XSLT processors
under linux so any hands on experience of these under UNIX would be
appresiated so please mail me if you have.

Building Stupidly Large Resilient Servers using Linux Virtual Servers
Michael Sparks

The Linux Virtual Servers project is aimed at one goal - taking a
cluster of server boxes (often linux, but can be any OS) and using the
to provide a single coherent highly available service. Since there can
be many, many servers in such a cluster, building *very* large servers
is easily done.

I'll probably cover everything from how the load balancing is done in
terms of TCP/IP/ether frame packets, kernel config, flow/session
scheduling, through to building
a) a large scale web proxy ,
b) a large scale DNS server and
c) A large scale web server.

Should all be possible, since doing this stuff using LVS is fairly
trivial :-)

*** New York Linux Users Group February Meeting ***

                           - NYLUG.org -

Dr. Eben Moglin, Columbia Law Professor and General
Counsel to the Free Software Foundation, discusses
                       DVD and OpenSource.

 Wed. 2/16/00
 6:00-7:40pm
 IBM Building
590 Madison Avenue at 57th Street
Check in at lobby for badge and room number.

*note* This meeting starts one half hour earlier than usual.

 ---------------------------- The Deal -------------------------------------

Until recently, the only computers on which a person could play DVD movies
were Macintosh and Windows systems. Deeming the Linux market to be to small,
the DVD consortium did not release any documentation for vendors to create
products. In order to get his Linux machine to play DVD, Jon Johansson, a 16
year old in Norway, reversed engineered the CSS algorithm which encrypts DVD
content. Police staged a surprise raid on his home, confiscated computer and
telephone equipment, arrested both Jon and his father and according to
Johansson, subjected them to questioning for approximately 6-7 hours
apparently without a lawyer. It is reported that the charges carry fines
and prison terms of up to two years.

Since then, hundreds of defendants from around the world have been named in
a lawsuit by the DVD Copy Control Association, a non-profit organization
which represents the motion picture industry. The lawsuits aim to stop
people from carrying or even linking to websites that carry the
 de-encryption code.

CNN reports that it took years for the movie industry to agree to this
encryption standard and that Johansson's code fosters piracy. Opendvd.org
claims the code is not against the law because the DMCA (Digital Millenium
Copyright Act) clearly states that "reverse-engineering on the basis of
 interoperability" is legal.

Join us on Wednesday night, 2/16, when Dr. Eben Moglin discusses DVD and
Open Souce. Dr. Moglin is a professor at Columbia Law School specializing in
legal history and computer law and has been a designer and implementer of
advanced computer languages at I.B.M. He received his J.D. and PH.D. from
Yale University and serves without fee as general counsel to the Free
Software Foundation. His publications and other information can be found on
 his homepage at http://emoglen.law.columbia.edu

Note that Dr. Moglin must leave at 7:40pm, so let's all please focus our
questions and make efficient use of his time.

Subject: signature 0.11 - dynamically produced sigs for e-mail & news
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 23:18:02 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing a new release of signature, 0.11.

signature is a free open-source producer of dynamic signatures for
livening up your e-mail and news postings. It enables you to sign
your messages with a different sig every time.

signature allows you to define a signature template containing static
and placeholder text, the latter of which will be dynamically replaced
by the output of fortune(6) or any other program whenever a signature
is required.

As an alternative, you can also create your own quote file containing
your favourite tag lines.

User-visible changes from 0.10 to 0.11

* external programs can now be called with arguments (shell quoting required)
* quote files can now use either ~ or % as a separator

The software can be obtained from:

    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.11.tar.gz

RPM format packages can be obtained from:

    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.11.i386.rpm
    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.11.src.rpm

The source code is available under the GPL 2.0 licence.

I'd like to invite all interested persons to trace and test a new linux
floppies family project. Currently are available first three floppies:
lecithin, caffeine and quinine. It is a set to make all dirty work inside
your system -copying, fdisk-ing, nice editing, all-type-archives
accessing, ISA PnP and PCI monitoring, and many others. Based on kernel
2.2.13, with all SCSI support.

I'm planning to make and test several next disks for networking purposes.
Homepage of my project are at http://www.sp8qed.ampr.org/liap/

Regards,

Luke.

Gnomoku is a Gomoku game using the GTK+ widget toolkit (thru GTK--) and
the GNOME stock UI functions by András Nagy and Gergő Érdi. It can be
played either by two players via a TCP/IP network, or against a computer
AI opponent (based on Emacs' gomoku engine).

Grab it from http://cactus.rulez.org/files/gnomoku-0.2.tar.gz (it
badly lacks a fancy website and Linux distribution packages)

From: Grant Taylor <gtaylor+cola_biejd022200@picante.com>
Subject: Major Printing HOWTO and support database updates
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 23:08:30 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I've recently made significant updates to the Printing HOWTO and its
associated support database -- http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/
These include:

 - Complete coverage of PDQ**, a printing system for Unix-like systems
which is a big improvement over traditional spooling systems like
LPD. PDQ allows for flexible user control over printing and
printer-specific options like duplexing, paper trays, quality
   modes, etc.

 - Information on printing photographs, centered around today's common
   color inkjets.

 - A new "proofread" flag in the database; all printers in the
compatibility list are marked when I double-check new information.
This gives users an appropriate level of confidence in the
   information.

 - A new utility called "PDQ-O-Matic", which automagically converts
the information in the database into a PDQ driver specification for
the printer. This greatly simpifies PDQ configuration, even for
traditionally difficult printers like the Lexmark Jetprinters or
   the PPA Deskjets.

 - Work on an equivalent utility for the cups_filter package of free
CUPS driver specifications is underway; to see the initial effort
view the PDQ-O-Matic and change the URL from pdq-o-matic to
   kups-o-matic.

NOTE: the Linux Documentation Project's HOWTO collection, and
especially most Linux distributions, currently contain older versions
of this HOWTO; be sure to obtain the latest from the URL below - you
want version 4.4 or later.

About the Printing HOWTO
- ------------------------

The Printing HOWTO* is the best starting point for any investigation
into Linux printing. It covers all aspects of printing, including
local and remote printing, printing to and from different operating
systems, and coverage and examples for common software like LPD, PDQ,
and Ghostscript.

The Printing HOWTO's web-based support database has complete Linux
information on over 400 printers. The information is distribution
agnostic and encapsulates the experiences of hundreds of users. A
brief summary of the database appears in the HOWTO itself, but for the
full information and recent updates consult the web version.

* The HOWTO, the database, and a few other printing resources are
  located at http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/

** PDQ can be obtained from http://feynman.tam.uiuc.edu/pdq/
A configuration tutorial highlighting PDQ's basic abilities appears
   in the HOWTO.
