Subject: nuni-0.04 boot loader eliminates 1024 cyl issue
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 19:29:54 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

nuni is a boot loader for Linux, using ext2 file system and IDE drives.
The reason for this particular loader is to avoid bios limitations by
not
using the bios. For example, there is no 1024 cylinder problem
because the concept of cyliders is not used. There is also no problem
with a difference in geometry between the bios and linux because neither
the bios nor the concept of geometry is not used. We can boot from any
place on the drive, up to 137gb. Also any drive from hda to hdh can be
used.

nuni-0.04 supports zImage and bzImage kernels, kernel command lines, and
various ext2 block sizes.

There is an article about nuni posted at:
http://www.linuxforum.com/plug/index.html
nuni can also be downloaded from there.

I've also posted it at:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/loaders/
The 0.04 version should show up there soon. If not, you can get it at:

Subject: CONFERENCE: Dr. Michael Stonebraker Presents on MegaTrends 2000 at LinuxWorld
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 19:30:45 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Dear Editor,

Dr. Michael Stonebraker, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at
Informix Software and a renowned authority on database technologies will
reveal his predictions for "Database management MegaTrends of the
millennium: next week at Linux World.

Dr. Stonebraker's talk will highlight future technologies needed to
integrate, store and share Internet applications and focus on Linux - the
friendly, open, scalable and reliable operating system. His presentation
will engage the audience on:

* The business and industry benefits of adopting Universal components
* The impact of future storage architectures to complement these emerging
technologies
* Object relational engines
* Web-to enterprise and Web-to-Web integration
* Incorporating the desktop into Web applications

A University of California at Berkeley Professor, Dr. Stonebraker, founder
of Illustra Technologies (acquired by Informix for its object relational and
DataBlade technology) oversees Informix technology and plays a leading role
in identifying upcoming and cutting-edge technologies outside of Informix's
portfolio.

Extended Information:

Presenting at Linux World for the first time, Dr. Michael Stonebraker will
explore "DBMS MegaTrends for the Millennium" as they relate to Linux and
other operating systems. Dr. Stonebraker is widely regarding as one of the
most creative and pragmatic visionaries in the database field. Since
creating Relational Technologies (later renamed Ingres) nearly 30 years ago,
Dr. Stonebraker has been directly involved in bringing major architectural
advances in relational (Ingres) and object-relational extensibility
(POSTGRES, Illustra) to the marketplace.
Stonebraker is the less famous half of a rivalry between Oracle Software CEO
Larry Ellison, dating back to the time when almost all database software was
licensed from IBM. Reviewing "The Difference Between God and Larry Ellison"
Bill Rosenblatt of Sunworld commented, "The reason Ingres failed where
Oracle succeeded was that whereas Stonebraker concentrated on excellence in
engineering - most database experts agree that Ingres was the superior
product - Ellison prevailed through flamboyant, aggressive salesmanship and
marketing."
In 1997 after Stonebraker joined Informix, it was announced that
extensibility had been added to the high performance Informix DSA database
engine. Ellison told InfoWorld, "... they did not -- integrate those two
products. They did not, they cannot, they will not, it's impossible."
Nevertheless, the integration was successful and Oracle was forced to come
up with a competing technology, Data Cartridges, which they added to their
own DBMS engine.
Dr. Stonebraker first developed and demonstrated the viability of the
object-relational model with POSTGRES at Berkeley, where he has been a
professor since 1971. He then co-founded Illustra Information Technologies,
which developed and sold the first commercial object-relational database and
introduced the concept of DataBlades. DataBlades allowed application
developers to use powerful computer languages such as C++ and more recently
Java directly within the database server. By extending the reach of these
languages, both the application development and architectural networking
model are significantly simplified and performance improved, particularly
for computationally intensive tasks such as management of sophisticated Web
sites, eCommerce transactions across the Internet, and real-time DataMarts
and DataWarehouses.

Dr. Stonebraker is Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Informix
Software, a position he has held since a 1996 merger with Illustra. As noted
above, he also serves as a Professor of Computer Science at the University
of California at Berkeley. He is the author of "The Object-Relational DBMSs"
and a second edition (co-authored with Paul Brown), "Object-Relational
DBMSs, the Next Great Wave", Morgan-Kaufmann Publishers, 1996 and 1998,
respectively. Dr. Stonebraker received a bachelor of science degree from
Princeton University and master of science and doctoral degrees from the
University of Michigan.

Dr. Stonebraker's presentation:

Title: ecasound
Version: 1.6.12r10
Entered-date: 29JAN00
Description: Ecasound is a software package designed for multitrack
audio processing. It can be used for simple tasks like
audio playback, recording and format conversions, as
well as for multitrack effect processing, mixing,
recording and signal recycling. Ecasound supports a
wide range of audio inputs, outputs and effect
algorithms. Several open-source audio packages, like
for instance ALSA, OSS, mpg123, lame, libaudiofile and
MikMod, are directly supported. One of the advantages
of ecasound's chain-based design is that effects can easily
be combined both in series and in parallel. Oscillators
and MIDI-CCs can be used for controlling effect
parameters. Included user-interfaces are ecasound -
a versatile console mode interface, qtecasound -
                a Qt-based X-interface and various command-line utils
                suitable for batch processing.

Subject: gtk-font-hack 0.2: Font smoothing for GNOME
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 19:38:43 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The gtk-font-hack is a patch against the GDK (distributed with the
GTK). It smooths fonts in GTK and GNOME programs. As its name
suggests, it is a hack and really font smoothing should be done in
other ways. The patch will therefore not be included in the GDK
distribution for the foreseeable future.

The current version is 0.2-gtk-1.2.6 which still has several known
bugs, but works in most applications.

There are two homepage locations:

http://altern.org/vii/programs/linux/gtk-font-hack/
http://www3.cybercities.com/v/vii/programs/linux/gtk-font-hack/

mailto:vii@altern.org

Developers and testers wanted!
