Subject: Compaq C V6.2 for Linux Alpha is available
Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 00:05:57 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Compaq Computer Corporation is pleased to announce the availability of
Compaq C Version 6.2 for Linux Alpha. This product provides the same
highly-optimizing C compiler technology for the Alpha processor as found
on Compaq's Tru64(tm) UNIX=AE and OpenVMS operating systems. This
product also includes the Compaq Portable Math Library (CPML) and the
Ladebug debugger ported from Tru64(tm) UNIX=AE. Documentation includes
man pages, a Language Reference Manual, and a Programmers Guide.
Compaq C Version 6.2 provides the same code optimization technology used
in Compaq Fortran for Linux Alpha, both of which are up-to-date with the
very latest compilers for Compaq's Tru64(tm) UNIX=AE. This technology
can provide significant performance improvements in C applications
previously built for Linux Alpha. In some floating-point intensive C
applications, for example, improvements of a factor of two or more have
been seen, while more modest improvements on the order of 15% to 30% are
more often seen for integer codes.
The public beta period has ended, and Compaq C Version 6.2 for Linux
Alpha is now available. The product can be downloaded immediately from
the World Wide Web at no charge, subject to acceptance of an online
license agreement. It will also be offered on CDROM for a moderate
price in the near future.
Support services include:
* Free peer-to-peer Web-based support available from
University of New Hampshire (UNH)
* Per-incident call packs from Compaq Customer Support Center
* Subscription service which provides automatic availability
of new Compaq C releases
For more information on downloading the Compaq C product, go to
http://www.compaq.com/linux <http://www.compaq.com/linux> and
click on the "Software" link.
Compaq Fortran for Linux Alpha has also concluded its public beta
test, and is now available. For more information, go to
http://www.compaq.com/fortran <http://www.compaq.com/fortran> .

to create the administration tools that will make setting up a diskless
Linux workstation easier.
If you are interested in building or administering diskless workstations
in a Linux environment, then you really should checkout this project.
Included in this update are: New character based mode, better font

Like last year, there will be some great prizes (we're just starting to
gather them -- at the moment it's a lot of KRUD :-).
Also like last year, we're still begging for more prizes -- so if you
have something you'd like to donate to the cause, drop me an e-mail

Oh, and to those of you who have been entering dates in 2038, let me remind

Subject: APE - portable C++ framework for threading and sockets
Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 00:23:03 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The 1.0(.0) release of APE is now available for download through
http://www.voxilla.org/projects/projape.html.
APE is a hightly portable C++ framework of classes for writing threaded
network and telephony servers under UNIX (using pthread) and the Win32
API. APE provides portable class abstraction for threads, sockets. and
sychronization objects and is used as a base framework for many other
projects. The goal of APE has been to make writing threaded servers
in C++ both practical and convenient, even for simple projects, and
hence simplicity and low runtime overhead are primary design goals.
While inteded for server development, people have found APE useful in
many other roles. Some have used APE as a set of thread and socket
classes for KDE application development, for example. The 1.0 release
is the result of over 6 months of APE use in real projects and continued
development. APE is licensed under the GPL with exceptions in a
manner similar to the Guile license.

Subject: autoproject 0.6.0 - create a skeleton source package for a new program
Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 00:22:24 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Version 0.6.0 of autoproject has been released. It has improved
support for languages other than C. However, program skeleton files
are provided only for C, C++, and sh. For other languages,
autoproject only adds appropriate macros in configure.in, so that
autoconf will find the relevant compiler. Several bugs were also fixed.
autoproject may be download from here:
http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt/
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/devel
Recent changes:
1999-12-18 James R. Van Zandt <jrv@vanzandt.mv.com>
* configure.in: version 0.6.0
* autoproject.in (PRIMARY_LANG): Ask separately about the primary
language and the others. Look for skeleton files according to the
primary language, but not the rest.
* autoproject.in: Allow user to specify more than one language.
Search for whole language name in string, not just as a substring.
Look for language "yacc" rather than "y" and "fortran" rather than
"f".
1999-12-14 James R. Van Zandt <jrv@voyager.mv.com>
* lib/cli/c++/none/program.cc: new file, for c++ main program.
* lib/cli/c++/none/Makefile.am: new file, providing for c++ main
program.
1999-12-03 James R. Van Zandt <jrv@vanzandt.mv.com>
* configure.in: version 0.5.0
* README: update clig URL
* lib/cli/c/none/program.c: initialize ofile in decode_switches()
since stdout need not be a constant, and accept --silent as well
as --quiet (thanks to Kalle Olavi Niemitalo <tosi@ees2.oulu.fi>)
* autoproject.in: precede each pattern with "--", so the pattern
could (in principle) begin with "-".
* autoproject.in (TEMP): in getopt call, note that --language
takes an argument (thanks to Kalle Olavi Niemitalo
<tosi@ees2.oulu.fi>)
(STDLANGS): the language is yacc, not just y
(STDPARSERS): Check that each language, parser, etc. matches as a
whole word.
1999-08-07 James R. Van Zandt <jrv@vanzandt.mv.com>
* configure.in: version 0.4.0
* publish: Check that verbose switch is commented out before
releasing.
* autoproject.lsm.in (Copying-policy): change nomenclature to
"GPL" so metalab.unc.edu robot will recognize it.
* autoproject.in: get bash path from configure (thanks to
phgrau@cis.fu-berlin.de (Philipp Grau) for pointing out the
problem).
* configure.in: find path to bash.
README file:
autoproject - create a skeleton source package for a new program
autoproject interviews the user, then creates a source package for a
new program which follows the GNU programming standards. The new
package uses autoconf to configure itself, and automake to create the
Makefile. `make distcheck' succeeds.
The idea is that you execute autoproject just once when you start a
new project. It will ask a few questions, then create a new directory
and populate it with standard files, customized for the new project.
The version number for the new program is initialized as 0.1.0, and is
set in configure.in. It is available in C programs as the macro
VERSION, and in the Makefile as $(VERSION).
Optionally, the new package will use a command line parser generator.
Currently, autoproject supports two parser generators:
clig by Harald Kirsch <kir@iitb.fhg.de>
(see http://wsd.iitb.fhg.de/~kir/clighome/)
autogen by Bruce Korb <korbb@datadesign.com>
(see ftp://autogen.linuxbox.com/pub/)
I would like to support graphical user interface (GUI) as well as
command line interface (CLI) programs, but I have very little
experience with them. Contributions would be welcome.
For the latest version, check here:
http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt/
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/devel
autoproject is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
