Easysoft ODBC Middleware Opens Corporate Data to the Linux Community
Extending the benefits of ODBC to users of Linux and other non-Windows
platforms.
Leeds, England, Dec. 7, 1999 -- When an organisation turns to Linux to
enhance and expand its business systems, an essential consideration is how
legacy information can be incorporated into the new paradigm.
Windows users are accustomed to simple, consistent access to disparate data
sources through ODBC, the SQL based data access standard, now adopted and
controlled by the Open Standards Group.
Easysoft have now extended the benefits of ODBC to users of Linux and other
non-Windows platforms with the introduction of the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC
Bridge, a new component in the Easysoft Data Access 2000 family of
enterprise data access solutions.
By extending the ODBC API to Linux, the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge allows
access to any ODBC enabled database using standard Linux development tools
and desktop applications. The Bridge is supported within Perl DBI DBD::ODBC,
C, Python, Rexx/SQL and PHP and has been fully tested with leading office
software such as Applixware and Star Office.
Although the Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge can be used without a Driver Manager,
Easysoft have worked closely with the developers of unixODBC, the standard
Open Source ODBC 3.0 Driver Manager and toolset, to ensure the Bridge is
fully compatible with unixODBC.
Sales Director, John Kos is delighted with the early feedback from users.
"Pre-launch over 5,000 sites installed the evaluation version. As you might
imagine, the Bridge is predominately being used with Apache to web enable
legacy applications and implement e-commerce solutions where the data is
stored in Microsoft Access, SQL Server, DB2 or Oracle. Many companies have
been so satisfied with the performance that they have pushed ahead to deploy
solutions based on the Bridge way ahead of the official release." The
Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge is a member of Easysoft Data Access 2000,a family
of software components and services for building enterprise-wide data access
solutions based on industry standards and providing heterogeneous access to
any database on any platform. Other components include the Easysoft
JDBC-ODBC Bridge and the Easysoft SQL Engine.
Easysoft -- Easysoft is a leading supplier of data access middleware
solutions based firmly on established industry standards. Easysoft products
provide an open framework to which you can add your own business logic to
create secure data access solutions that deliver consistent, blistering
performance, irrespective of client technology, server or database.

Keen little rabbit ears requires the installation of Perl (Version 5), Perl/Tk,

CryptoArchive - http://www.cryptoarchive.net/
The purpose of CryptoArchive is to collect, maintain and distribute
cryptographic software, documentation and information to anyone that
wants it. CryptoArchive was started by Kurt Seifried
(seifried@seifried.org). CryptoArchive will probably host a variety
of security software as well, since providing a secure environment is
just as important as choosing good cryptographic software.
CryptoArchive will not accept any cryptographic software (or in some
cases documentation) that is export controlled from it's country of
origin (for example the United States of America), I do not want to
have to enforce controls on who can and cannot access various parts
of the archive, and legally it is too risky. If you have any concerns
feel free to ask me (I want to include as much as possible, I just
don't want to end up in jail). If you have, or know of) a crypto
project that is not included please contact me, I'm sure I'll miss
more then a few projects/documents.
CryptoArchive will be available via ftp, and www for normal users,
for mirror sites the archives will be available via rsync (to ensure
it's continuity). Banner ads will be run on the www side, and text
messages in the ftp side will also be used (bandwidth isn't free
unfortunately).
As far as privacy goes I'm waffling on this, while I would like
nothing more then to have a 0 logging policy (i.e. no logs of ftp or
www access at all) I do need to know what is popular, how well
advertising is working, and so on. I will not sell log data except as
general statistics (i.e. webalizer style output), and will probably
destroy log files after a certain period (end of the month after I
generate statistics most likely). If there is sufficient demand I
will setup virtual servers that do not log accesses (I don't want to
paint myself into a corner either way).
Legal issues
Since I am accepting no export restricted crypto I will be avoiding
many problematic legal issues. For example if I were to host American
crypto, then I would have to make sure only US and Canadian residents
could access it Otherwise I (and possibly other Americans and
Canadians working on the project) could be held liable (as in federal
law breaking type liable). Obviously I do not want to go to jail, but
more importantly I do not want to exclude Americans from helping and
sponsoring the project (since that is where a lot of help and
sponsorship will be from).

Announcement of Linux Installfest
What:
An Installfest is a gathering of people interested in
Linux with the intent of installing Linux on computers
owned by the individuals. We are also calling it a LinuxFest
to promote the idea of just sharing information.
It is FREE!
WHAT'S NEW THIS MONTH:
Note the time change, we are now running from 10 - 4.
Where:
The College of DuPage during the computer central computer expo.
We are in a room in the building _next_ to where the sale is held.
We are easy to find: if you go to the expo you will see our signs.
When:
Sunday December 12, 1999
Sunday January 23, 2000
Sunday February 27, 2000
Sunday April 30, 2000
Sunday May 28, 2000
Sunday June 25, 2000
Sunday July 30, 2000
Sunday August 27, 2000
Sunday September 24, 2000
Sunday October 22, 2000
Sunday November 26, 2000
This is the same day as the computer expo.
9:30-10 is the setup time.
10-4 is the install time.
The swap meet runs from 9-3.
Watch the web site for changes. www.uniforum.chi.il.us/linuxfest/
Who:
The local Linux User Groups are doing the installs.
UniForum Chicago is the coordinating organization; UniForum Chicago has
allocated $700 to promote and buy supplies for the upcoming installfests.
We are _not_ associated with the expo, we just think it is convenient
to have the installfest at the same time to allow people to pick
up some needed hw at the same time they are installing Linux.
I am Michael Potter, mep@xnet.com.
How:
For Installers:
a) Show up and install or just hang out.
b) Bring powercords and powerstrips to loan to or donate to the cause.
c) Bring your favorite distribution of Linux.
d) Bring network cable and hubs.
e) Bring foldable 2 wheel dollies.
f) Bring your experience on how to run an installfest (I am new at this).
g) Bring information about your Linux group so we can promote your group.
h) Bring a banner to hang up promoting your group.
For Installees:
Bring your computer and all the peripherals that
you want to work under Linux. We will not have spare monitors,
so you will have to bring your own.
The computer should have free disk space to install Linux, at
least 100MB.
You do not have to give up windows, we can install a dual boot system.
We have software which allows partitioning a live partition
and therefore, you do not need an open partion (just the free space).
Back up your system before you come. Even without the risk associated
with installing a new operating system, just moving the computer
in your car is a good enough reason to backup critical data.
There is no charge.
For Socializers:
Feel Free to stop by and say hi, there is no cover charge ;).

Subject: Festival 1.4.1 speech synthesis system
Date: Sat, 11 Dec 1999 02:03:10 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The Festival Speech Synthesis System version 1.4.1
and Edinburgh Speech Tools Library version 1.2.1
30th November 1999
Festival offers a general framework for building speech synthesis
systems as well as including examples of various modules. As a whole
it offers full text to speech through a number APIs: from shell level,
though a Scheme command interpreter, as a C++ library, from Java, and
an Emacs interface. Festival is multi-lingual (currently English
(British and American), and Spanish) though English is the most
advanced. Other groups release new languages for the system.
The system is written in C++ and uses the Edinburgh Speech Tools
Library for low level architecture and has a Scheme (SIOD) based
command interpreter for control. Documentation is given in the FSF
texinfo format which can generate, a printed manual, info files and
HTML.
Festival is free sorftware and is distributed under an X11-type
licence allowing unrestricted commercial and non-commercial use alike.
This release offers minor bug fixes and new compiler support over
version 1.4.0 which was release in June 1999.
This distribution includes:
* Full English (British and American English) text to speech
* Full C++ source for modules, SIOD interpreter, and Scheme library
* Lexicon based on CMULEX and OALD (OALD is restricted to non-commercial
use only)
* Edinburgh Speech Tools, low level C++ library
* British English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
* 2 American English Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 8k and 16k versions)
* 4 other voices using MBROLA based diphone synthesis (1 British Male,
2 American Males and 1 American Female).
* Castilian Spanish Male (for residual LPC resynthesis 11k version)
* British English Male (for spike excited LPC resynthesis 10k version)
* Full documentation (html, postscript and GNU info format)
Festival version 1.4.1 sources, voices, and Linux binaries are
available from
http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/download.html
and also from the US mirror at CMU
http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/festival/download.html
The Festival home page, offering descriptions of the system, examples
and online demos, can be found at
http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival.html
Requirements
To run Festival you need:
* A Unix machine, Festival has compiled and run on Suns (SunOS and
Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, SGIs and DEC Alphas but should be portable
to any standard Unix machine.
* A C++ compiler: we have used GCC version 2.7.2, 2.8.1, 2.95.1
SunCC 4.1 and 4.2, and egcs. Other C++ compilers are
probably possible with perhaps some minor chanages
* GNU Make any recent version
* Audio hardware, /dev/audio (8 bit and 16 bit on Suns, Linux
and FreeBSD) and NCD's NAS network transparent audio system
are supported directly but Festival supports the execution of
any Unix command that can play audio files.
There is also support for building the system under Windows NT and
95/98. We have successfully ran the system complied with Cygnus' GNU
win32 package and Microsoft's Visual C++, instructions are included
We intend to distribute binary distributions for major
architectures particularly Linux and Solaris. We will *not*
distribute binary versions for Windows NT/95 as we do not have enough
expertise to support them.
New in 1.4.1 version
* many small bug fixes
* SSFF track support (for emulabel)
* updated support for gcc-2.95.(12], gcc-2.7.2.[23], and AIX
* Support for new JDKs
