The announcement below is in Dutch and we think this may interrest all
people that speak Dutch worldwide.

Short Anglish:

The publisher ten Hagen & Stam has given permission to the authors Eric
Maryniak and Hans Paijmans to bring their book 'Linux: de PC als
Unix-workstation' under GNU General Public License (GPL).

Plans are in progress to convert the book to DocBook SGML and form a team
to update the book where needed.

Full Dutch:

'Linux: de PC als Unix-workstation' onder GPL

   26 november 1999
     _________________________________________________________________

1. Kort

Subject: GiNaC first public prerelase - symbolic computation framework
Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 00:05:25 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

We are pleased to announce the first public prerelease (V0.4.0) of GiNaC, an
open framework for symbolic computation within the C++ programming language.

GiNaC, which stands for GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System), is a
library for C++, designed to allow the creation of integrated systems that
embed symbolic manipulations together with more established areas of
computer science (like computation-intense numeric applications, graphical
interfaces, etc.) under one roof. It has been specifically developed to
become a replacement engine for a couple of ongoing research projects in
high energy physics, projects which have until now been powered by the
MapleV CAS. However, it is not restricted to physics applications. Its
design is unconventional in a sense that contrary to ordinary CAS it does
not try to provide sophisticated algebra in a rather limited programming
language but instead accepts a given language (ANSI-C++) and extends it by a
set of symbolic/algebraic capabilities. It is accompanied by the tiny GiNaC
INteractive SHell (ginsh), a powerful command-line calculator for Unix that
supports arbitrary precision calculations, differentiation of functions,
computations of multivariate polynomial GCD and much more without having to
actually program in C++.

It is licensed under the terms and conditions of the GNU general public
license (GPL) and depends on Bruno Haible's CLN library (also GPL'ed).

The web-site <http://www.ginac.de/> contains download-instructions, a system
overview and a tutorial.

Have fun!
      -rbk.

Subject: Afio archiver version 2.4.6
Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 00:11:41 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Version 2.4.6 is a maintenance release.

* WHAT IS IT?

Afio is an archiver/backup program that produces cpio-format archives.

Like tar, afio can make compressed archives. However, the compressed
archives produced by afio are much safer than tar -z archives. If a
tar -z archive has a read error, tar is unable to extract the files
beyond this error. The compressed archive format used by afio allows
it to recover from read errors and go on unpacking the next file.

* WHERE DO I GET IT?

Version 2.4.6 is at:

  sunsite.unc.edu : /pub/Linux/system/backup/afio-2.4.6.tgz

and soon at:

  ftp.win.tue.nl : /pub/linux-local/tbackup/afio-2.4.6.tgz

* Y2K COMPLIANCE

Afio is Y2K compliant. Releases from 2.3.6 on have been tested and
none have Y2K problems.

* DO I NEED TO UPGRADE TO 2.4.6?

 - You should upgrade if

   * you use afio together with pgp to make archives with encrypted
files (the new version fixes a security hole for afio+pgp)

   * you use afio for multi-volume tape archives and have had some
problems in the past (the new version fixes some bugs and
     misfeatures related to multi-volume)

   * you use afio as a backup engine inside tools like 'tob', 'taper',
'kbackup', 'tbackup' to make backups of a live filesystem
(some exit code incompatibility problems have been fixed)

 - In all other cases upgrading is not critical.

* NEW FEATURES

 - Can do multi-volume archives to volumes of different sizes
 - More control over exit codes
 - More example scripts
 - Can exclude/include files by pattern when creating archives
 - Better compatibility when compiling on Sun, HPUX, IRIX
 - Can use 'promptscript' option when running as a cron or at job.
