Subject: Secure FTP now available: SafeTP!
Date: Tue, 30 Nov 1999 23:03:59 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Did you know that FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sends your password in
the clear?
This means every time you use standard (non-anonymous) FTP, you're
opening yourself and your system up to attack from malicious hackers
who may be listening to your network connection! This security hole
has frequently been exploited to vandalize web sites and compromise
mission-critical systems.
Now there's a solution!
We are proud to announce a new, secure FTP system developed at U.C.
Berkeley called SafeTP which is now available for download -- best of
all, it's FREE! SafeTP uses strong public-key encryption to protect
your password and file data.
--> http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~smcpeak/SafeTP <--
For Windows:
A SafeTP proxy client is available for Windows 95/98/NT that runs
transparently in the OS to secure connections from *any*
Windows FTP client! The client proxy can be downloaded at the
following URL. Installation is a snap and takes less than 1 MB of
hard drive space. Get it now!
A SafeTP server that runs under NT is also available.
For Unix:
The Unix server runs as an unpriviledged (non-root) user,
uses existing ftpd (and associated existing configuration!), and
its sources are available.
A Unix client that behaves similar to the usual ftp client is
also available in the same distribution.
Please direct questions and comments to:
Dan Bonachea <bonachea@cs.berkeley.edu>, and
Scott McPeak <smcpeak@cs.berkeley.edu>
