MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Sat., 27 Noveber 1999, 13:00 to 15:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

The main presentation:

A consciously pre-intended BOF ssession ...

1. An installfest was scheduled -- but as near as we can tell,
all the folks likely to be present have gotten over that 'hump.'
Owl River has been participating in a Beta test for NetMax [see
www.netmax.com] probably bring a machine and do the install --
If there is any interest in a particular distribution, advise
the mailing list [see below], and the distribution in question
will probably surface.

  [Phil H suggests that we adjourn promptly to the `Fudruckers'
  across the street, and conduct part of the meeting with non-
  virtual beer as a facilitator.]

2. There'll, no doubt, be a smattering of local `Experts' to
offer their thoughts for `general Q and A's, describing
varied techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level
problem solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat'
in the sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

  [Bring in a sick chassis and related parts, and it may well go
  home functional!]

3. Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the presentations.

  As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
content are subject to change.

MEETING SITE:
=============
This month's meeting will be held at:

        TEAM America  (http://www.teamamerica.com)
        110 East Wilson Bridge Road
        Worthington, OH 43085

        The building is at US23 North and 270 off of
        East Wilson Bridge Road just around the first
        curve.

Parking is FREE !

.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday of a month,
alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh their schedules with
COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend on facility availabity, with
common-sense relocation in the holiday season.

The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting site.

Meeting Schedule
================

The NEXT meeting is scheduled on SATURDAY, 29 December 1999
19:00 to 21:00 local -- Location is up in the air -- we've
pretty well outgrown the kindly donated TeamAmerica site,
anthough we continue to 'shoe-horn' in until a suitable
replacement is found.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I would like to announce here the public release 0.4 of WebRAT, a Web-based
remote administration tool, designed to make system administrators' life easier
in broad networks, containing many Unix servers.

That release is an early stage, and although only two modules are
(partially) implemented yet (users add/remove, groups add/remove) they operate
as expected. Other modules to be added very soon.

You may access WebRAT at:
http://hq.hellug.gr/~webrat

Make sure to read the installation instructions at

Another freebie from Coralys.com

What is Quotes

Financial quotations and Linux news. With this program
you can fetch the latest Stock quotations for up to 10 stocks
registered in NASDAQ or NYSE (quotes are delayed 15-20 mins.),
also currency conversion (any-to-any) in case you are looking
for the right moment to exchange and as a bonus Linux news from
Slashdot!.

The Quotes-Apps package contains 'applets' for a variety of
Financial, Internet and Generic tasks.

So sure! why spend time downloading useless graphics and
banners when you are better off with the stuff that matters?

Problems fixed

  * Stocks. Sometimes there was a problem with values greater than
    100, or when there were more than 3 decimal digits.
  * Stocks. Updated the decoder because they changed the format.
  * QuotesMailer date format was fixed, it was ok for Unix
    mail readers but MS-Windows readers where misinterpreting the
    date.

Enhancements
  * A supplementary Applets package is distributed. If you need
    custom applets to be developed and don't have the means
    then please contact http://www.coralys.com/
  * Added -w (--web) option in Quotes for the 'stock' mode. It
    generates simple HTML output to enable charting capabilities
    at 'the point of your mouse'. QuotesMailer makes use of it
    with the same option name, then it uses a different file
    for the email address. You can use a different address for
    text/plain and text/html.
  * Ability to specify command line options to be passed to
    the 'external' applets (maybe I should call them quotelets).
  * Can now use -f to specify an alternate configuration file
    other than ~/.quotesrc
  * The Applet API has a new method: *SetOptions()
  * Minor output reformatting

Download
        Both .tar.gz and RPM packages are available
                quotes-1.5-1            (Core)

Subject: Suck MT 0.3h, a multi threaded suck replacement.
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 23:22:08 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

This is to announce the release of suckmt-0.3h

PREFACE
=======
Maintainer - Niels Basjes (suckmt@basjes.nl)

LOCATION
========
Visit http://go.to/suckmt to download the latest version (currently 0.3h).

INTRODUCTION
============
The suck package (http://home.att.net/~bobyetman/index.html) for getting a
small NNTP feed has one drawback: because it is single threaded it doesn't
use my modem line optimally. Normal suck doesn't use more than approx 2KB/s
when my modem can do approx 5KB/s. This means more phone costs than I would
like. It turns out that running two instances of suck makes more use of my
available bandwidth so I figured that a multithreaded implementation should
reduce the required connect time.

SuckMT is a multithreaded re-implementation of the features of suck I
actually use.

Note that SuckMT has absolutely no source in common with suck.

FEATURES
========
SuckMT has the same basic functionality as suck: get news messages for
local reposting. It also includes Kill and Keep headers and automatic
logging of when and how often a specific header was matched. This way you
can easily determine which kill rules have become obsolete. I've been using
SuckMT for the last few months and I've solved as far as I can tell all the
bugs (I also checked the code with purify) in the current set of features.
The code has been compiled and tested on SuSE Linux 6.1, Redhat Linux 6.0
and Windows NT 4.0 using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (This is what I call
writing portable code).

LICENSE
=======
GNU Public License.

FEEDBACK
========
If you have any bugs, comments, remarks or great ideas about new features
for suckmt to hesitate to mail me. If you actually use the software I would
also like to get a message.

Niels.

Subject: MAT 0.20 - Monitoring and Administration Tool
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 23:25:44 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi

I'm proud to announce a new release of the Monitoring and Administration
Tool (MAT). New to version 0.20 is the replication module. This allows
replication between UNIX hosts. A HPUX agent is now included, as well as
a GNU libc build. There are several bug fixes in the backup module, as
well as some fixes to the system monitoring module.

The MAT web site is at:
    http://www.ee.ryerson.ca/~sblack/mat

It contains screen-shots, as well as descriptions of MAT's functions.

Below is a description of this release of MAT.

              Monitoring & Administration Tool (MAT)
              --------------------------------------

MAT is an enterprise monitoring and administration tool. It allows
you as an administrator, or authorized individual, to manage a
hetrogeneous UNIX network.  It hides
most of the complexity of the standard configuration files making it
easier administer. The monitoring daemon provides historical
information about a hosts status. Several monitored parameters
can be graphed to aid capacity planning. The monitored parameters
can trigger events when a threshold is exceeded, alerting
administrators to problems.

Some of the advanced features include the ability to upgrade it's self
as new versions, or upgrades become available, the ability to allow
other users to control some or all of the administrative functions.
The ability to see the "health" of a host.

MAT is in three parts, the MAT agent, the MAT daemon, and the MAT
console. The MAT agent does the actual work of modifing files,
running commands, and inspecting the system. The MAT daemon MATd
periodically monitors system parameters, and can send alarms.
The MAT console provides an easy to use GUI which sends commands to
the MAT agent to manipulate and query standard UNIX configuration
files. It also provides an easy to use GUI for graphing the MATd
results and controlling the parameters monitored by MATd.

MAT is available for Linux, SunOS 4.1.x, and Solaris. An alpha
port to IRIX 6.x is included. Currently MAT
allows you to add, modify and delete the following:
        Users (Site specific user defaults are supported)
        Groups
        Hosts
        Email Aliases
        Mounted filesystems
        Crontab entries
        DNS client configuration
        Login message (motd)
        Services
        Exported (shared) filesystems
        DNS domains & records
        Most NIS records
        Syslogd entries

MAT allows you inspect many of the common system parameters including:
        All syslog files (TK 8.0 recommended for this)
        Routes
        Processes
        Lastlog
        Diskspace
        Exports

The monitoring deamon MATd runs scripts for monitoring of:
        Network Connectivity (through ICMP)
        Required Processes
        Disk usage
        CPU use
        Run queue
        User logins
        FTP server status
        SMTP server status
        Network Interface Activity
        SWAP, and Memory use are monitored in the Linux version.
A simple plotting tool allows you to graph the various monitored
parameters. The monitoring scripts are written in Perl, and should
be easy to customize and expand. The MAT probe has been updated to
display it's current status.

Requirements:
- -------------
For the MAT agent you need a UNIX machine running:
        Linux 2.x
        SunOS 4.1.4
        Solaris 5.x
        IRIX 6.x
        HPUX 10.10 or 10.20
Perl 5.x is needed for the monitored parameters and alarms.
The Console requires Tcl/TK on at least one host.

From: Stelian Pop <pop@cybercable.fr>
Subject: Dump 0.4b10 - dump/restore linux ext2 backup suite
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 23:27:44 GMT
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <pop@cybercable.fr>

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Here it is, another version of dump/restore linux ext2 backup suite.

As always, some bugs were corrected and some new features added. Refer
to the ChangeLog for details.

The last version is available from:
http://perso.cybercable.fr/pop/dump
or
http://spop.free.fr/dump

Enjoy,

Stelian.

ChangeLog follows:

Changes between versions 0.4b9 and 0.4b10 (released November 21, 1999)
======================================================================

1. Make configure test if the system glob routines support
        extended syntax (ALTDIRFUNC). If not, use the internal glob
        routines instead of system ones. Thanks to Bernhard Sadlowski
        <sadlowsk@Mathematik.Uni-Bielefeld.DE> for reporting the bug
        and helping me resolve this and other minor libc5 compiling
        glitches.

2. Fix a problem when dumping a ext2fs with the 'filetype'
        feature enabled. Thanks to Patrick J. LoPresti
        <patl@cag.lcs.mit.edu> for reporting the bug and to
        Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu> for providing the patch.

3. Made the nodump flag work on directories. A directory which
        has the nodump flag gets never dumped, regardless of its
        contents.

4. Integrate a patch from Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy@goop.org>
        which allows dump on an active ext3 filesystem. However, this
        is a "quick and dirty" patch which enables backup of an ext3
        filesystem through the ext2 compatibility (by ignoring the
        NEEDS_RECOVERY bit). The journal file is not recognized and
        it is dumped (it should not).

5. Test the superblock compatibility flags when dumping, in order
        to be sure that we know how to deal with specific features.
