                  | Eridani Star System announces: |
                  `--------------------------------'

         Eridani Linux 6.1A (Updated) CD ----> £ 3.50 each.

** Where did Red Hat go? This is it. Read below why...

                        We also have available:
         Eridani Applications CD 6.1 --------> £ 3.50 each.
         Linux-Mandrake 6.1 -----------------> £ 3.50 each.
         Slackware 7 ------------------------> £ 3.50 each.
         Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 2CDROM set ----> £ 6.00 per set.

                Older releases are also available.

** What happened to the Red Hat discs? Well, Red Hat changed their policy **
** regarding the use of the Red Hat name. Basically, if it isn't the boxed **
** set it can't be called Red Hat Linux especially if it's been altered. **
** So, we've rebadged ours as Eridani Linux. It is still basically the **
** Linux Distribution from FTP.REDHAT.COM, just includes updates and extras **

The Eridani 6.1A CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the
updates from ftp.redhat.com to that time on the CD. Rather than having
them in a separate updates directory, we have opted to make them part of
the install, so you automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.

A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Eridani
Linux is too big to have all the binaries and sources on the one CD. This
CD is also available, also for £ 3.50.

The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD
distribution from their Official Debian ISOs.
The Mandrake CDs are based on a Mandrake-sourced ISO.
The Slackware CDs are based on a Slackware-sourced ISO.

For more information about the discs, and how to order, please visit our
Web site at:
                http://www.eridani.co.uk

                (the old URL will continue to work)

International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.

Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank are accepted. UK postal orders are also
accepted. International bank transfers are also accepted, however they are
subject to a £ 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a £ 1.50 charge
for postage and packaging for up to 2 CDs within the UK, variable for
international customers.

               Linux Mall Announcement:
 The Bazaar: Get Trained by the Gurus of Open Source Date: 11/18/99

Open Source - it's real, it works, and it's the most exciting trend to
unnerve IT Managers in years! This is a great opportunity to learn how to
integrate Open Source technology into your existing systems - directly from
the guys who write the code. Personal, in-depth, hands-on training from the
gurus of the Open Source community!

It all happens at The Bazaar on December 14-16 at the Javits Center in New
York. Some of the hackers who are teaching and speaking are: Miguel de
Icaza, Nat Friedman, Kurt Granroth and Rasterman.

In the tutorial area, you'll learn how to: build firewalls with OpenBSD (and
have us try to hack them), develop Open Source enterprise apps, set up and
manage an Apache site, migrate from NT to GNU/Linux, work with Sendmail,
qmail, perl, TAO, Gimp, Gnumeric, KDE, GNOME, REBOL, and much more. Due to
the intensive nature of these hands-on tutorials, there are only 35 seats
available for each class, each equipped with its own ThinkPad. These seats
are filling quickly, so register today!

In the general session area, you'll hear from the experts about: Linux
distributions, avoiding pitfalls, building a company on Open Source
Technology, Linux and GNU certification, the State of GNOME, and the Apache
Project.

You can also attend free keynotes and panel discussions featuring Richard
Stallman, Jon "maddog" Hall, Bob Young, Eric Raymond, Bruce Perens and many
other movers and shakers from the Linux Community. There are more than 40
general sessions and tutorials in all, plus keynotes from industry
luminaries, and even an exposition hall where you can talk with many of the
companies that are helping to drive the integration of Open Source
technology with corporate IT systems.

LinuxMall.com is a Gold Sponsor of the Bazaar. We'll be there, we hope to
see you there! For a full list of speakers and panel discussions, check out
the Bazaar's Web site.

Subject: forktty-1.0 - attach a program to a CTTY
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 23:10:53 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/utils/terminal/forktty-1.0.tar.gz

Forktty attaches a program to a controlling terminal. It runs a
program in a different session with its standard input redirected to
/dev/null, like setsid(8), or to any CTTY specified by the user, like
what getty(1m) does with login(1).

The program actually

  1. forks
  2. closes stdin returning the prompt to the user
  3. disconnects from the controlling terminal by setsid() or,
     for older unixes, by the ioctl(TIOCNOTTY) setpgrp() sequence
  4. optionally connects to a new controlling terminal, followed by
     the ioctl(TIOCSTTY) call if needed
  5. and runs a program.

So, if you want to run lynx on an unsecure vt100 terminal at ttyS0, use

  forktty -l /dev/ttyS0 -- bash -login -c "reset; exec lynx -restrictions=all"

or just a program in a new session (stdin is /dev/null)

  forktty -- program [ arg ... ]

Note that

  bash <>/dev/ttyS0 2>&1 &

does not work. Just hit ^C after the previous line; it will send an INT to
the bash at ttyS0. If you hit ^C on the vt100, bash will block on the strange
character present in its input stream.

The following script can be used to tunnel a slip link through a telnet
session. Just connect to your ISP, run slirp, and do a slattach on ttyze.

  # link two tty's  ttyze <--> ttyzf
  # start the seyon terminal emulator on /dev/ttyze
  # start telnet on /dev/ttyzf

  if [ ! -p pipe ]; then mknod pipe p; fi
  cat pipe |cu -l /dev/ptyze -E '' --nostop \
    |cu -l /dev/ptyzf -E '' --nostop >pipe &
  seyon -modem /dev/ttyze &
  sleep 1; forktty -l /dev/ttyzf -c "sleep 1 && reset && exec telnet -8 -E"

Subject: MIT Photonic-Bands 0.8
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 23:08:46 GMT
Reply-To: stevenj@alum.mit.edu

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

We are pleased to announce the initial release of the MIT
Photonic-Bands package, MPB 0.8, freely downloadable from:

              http://ab-initio.mit.edu/mpb/

MPB is a program to compute the band structures (dispersion relations)
and electromagnetic modes of periodic dielectric structures, and is
applicable both to photonic crystals (photonic band-gap materials) and
a wide range of other optical problems. Its features include:

  * Fully-vectorial, three-dimensional calculation.  Iterative
    eigensolver techniques are employed to make large, 3D calculations
    possible. (Can handle 2D and 1D problems too, of course.)

  * Direct, frequency-domain eigensolver (as opposed to indirect
    methods, e.g. time-domain). For one thing, this means that you get
    both eigenvalues (frequencies) and eigenstates (electromagnetic
    modes) at the same time.

  * "Targeted" eigensolver. Normally, iterative eigensolvers provide
    you with the states (optical bands/modes) with the lowest few
    frequencies. Our software can alternatively compute the modes
    whose frequencies are closest to a specified target frequency.
    This greatly reduces the number of bands that must be computed in
    guided or resonant mode calculations.

  * Flexible, scriptable user interface based upon the GNU Guile
    extension & scripting language. Complete manual in HTML.

  * Support for (nearly) arbitrary geometric structures and
    non-orthogonal unit cells.

  * Field and dielectric-function output in HDF format for input into
    many popular graphing and visualization tools.

  * Portable to most any Unix-like operating system; tested under
    Linux, AIX, IRIX, and Tru64 (Digital) Unix.

  * Free software under the GNU General Public License.

This software was developed in the Joannopoulos Ab Initio Physics
group of the MIT Physics Department.

Linux Intrusion Detection System is a linux kernel patch
and modules to enhancement the linux kernel security. It can
protect important files from being changed. When it's in
effect, no one (including root) can change the protected
files or directories and their sub-directories, and the
protected append-only files can only be appended. It can prevent
loaded modules from being unload, mounted filesystems from being
unmount and lauched processes from being kill. It can
also protect the hard disk's MBR, and can also disallow
sniffing while the NIC is in promiscuous mode.

Coralys.com announces the first release of a handy utility (GPL)
to help you maintain your RPM-based systems by covering some
features that the RPM program is missing.

What is RpmLevel
- -----------------

Most Unix operating systems have a program that shows you which packages
have been installed and which patches have been applied. Within the Linux
camp the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) is widespread. RPM gives you a lot of
querying possibilities but it is missing some.
So after you installed your brand new Red Hat (or derivation) system,
you want a quick summary of the state of affairs in your system so
that you can schedule system upgrades in response to the
Security Advisories and Erratas, and perhaps even add some 3rd extra
packages.

This at least has been one of my constant worries, specially when I
keep two Red Hat machines at home and one at work. Now I can, and so
can you!

Features
- --------
Here are the major features.

  * Written in Perl.
  * Keep track of the system patch levels with respect to the
    original distribution CD.
  * Quick overview of Not-Installed packages, Upgraded packages,
    Downgraded packages and Extra (third party) packages.
  * Works with Red Hat systems.

It has been designed and tested with Red Hat systems, but with some
modifications it should work on other RPM-based systems such as SuSE
and Mandrake.

Hello, everyone! I am looking to start/find a Linux User's group in NE
Michigan, preferably
in the Alpena area. If anyone knows of an existing group, or would like
to participate, feel free to contact me. (Also, if anyone has any advice
about starting a group, that would be much appreciated also) Thanks!

Greetings,

I've written a mini-howto on how to setup dual chrooted named
daemons under Redhat 6.0, as one might do on a dual-homed
firewall box.

Comments and suggestions appreciated.
